[Oroko Radio Newsletter 📮📡]

Our editor sat down with New Orleans African-American Musuem’s chief curator and director Gia Hamilton to talk Vince Fraser’s latest exhibition Ancestral Odyssey, curatorial stewardship, listening, and how institutions can be remade into vessels for memory-work and futures.

“The work finds me,” she says — and in this conversation, she traces how diasporic history, ritual, and resilience continue to shape her vision for building spaces of continuity. This dialogue moves from Congo Square to Afrofuturist horizons, from ancestral deposits to the possibilities of AI. It is both a history lesson and a call to imagine otherwise."

[LONDON - THE CARPET SHOP]

This Saturday, Oroko Radio is coming to South London’s The Carpet Shop!

We’re excited to welcome our special guests:

Akanbi—or, as we like to call him, “The Rave Man”—is a true fountain of energy whose passion for music and humanity is unrivaled. Raised in Lagos and now based in New York City, he brings focused intention to community organizing, tapping into spiritual frequencies that go beyond the surface. In 2014, he launched the GROOVY GROOVY party—a judgment-free space for wild dance floors, spiritual, mental, and physical rejuvenation, radical politics, and undeniably rocking talent.

Shannen SP—if her name isn’t on your radar yet—is an ever-inspiring, London-based DJ and curator whose fearless deep dives into the global underground have garnered widespread acclaim. Her raw, rich, and relentlessly persuasive sets demand your attention every time. Her musical focus lies in the experimental sounds emerging from global diasporas and African communities.

[LONDON - THE CARPET SHOP]

One week to go before we hit South London for our first night at .peckham

Expect heavy-hitting Gqom essence from our Durban 🇿🇦 residents, Omagoqa [ ]
The trio stand as a testament to the ever-evolving genre, crafting a new wave of Gqom with the artistic intention of letting the masses feel the indigenous authenticity of the sound. Their music showcases a version of Gqom coined ‘uThayela’ and ‘Is’qinsi’.
‘uThayela’ translates literally to “corrugated iron,” commonly used as roofing material on many South African homes. In music, it's used to describe a rougher sound with a harder bassline—built for clubs.
‘Is’qinsi’ is described as an infusion of ‘uThayela’ and electronic elements typically associated with globally-influenced electronica.

They will be joined by Fat-lïp! [ ]
North West London-based Oroko resident whose roots span Grenada 🇬🇩 and Jamaica 🇯🇲.
A multidisciplinary artist, Fat-lïp moves between DJing, saxophone, and sound design, crafting immersive soundscapes informed by deep listening and cultural memory.
Their sets celebrate the vast spectrum of Black music, weaving together Bouyon, Gqom, Dancehall, Techno, and beyond. Fat-lïp's sound is both ancestral and futuristic, bridging histories and rhythms across continents.
As the founder of the online archive VEXED and a member of the collective HARDFOOD, Fat-lïp’s practice is grounded in honouring and amplifying the sonic expressions of the Black diaspora sounds.

Listen back to the latest installment of 'PRJCT US',
as Prjct Kumasi’s Dopo [.ism ] invites Ghanaian artist Hassan Issah [ ]

Hassan Issah’s practice explores theatricality, objecthood, and situational dynamics through painting, sculpture, and installation. He works with a variety of materials—wallpaper, paint, and found objects—often referencing different art historical epochs.

His work reflects the everyday and the ordinary, especially drawing from his roots in the Zango community, while also challenging conventional ideas of what art is and how it can be interpreted.

The full show is now available in the Oroko archives.
