WATER SUPPLY TO RETURN IN PHASES FOLLOWING KPONG PLANT RESUMPTION 🇬🇭.

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has officially resumed water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant following the successful completion of critical maintenance works on the Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines.

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS OSP PROSECUTORIAL POWERS BUT AFFIRMS ATTORNEY-GENERAL’S ULTIMATE AUTHORITY TO TERMINATE CASES ACCRA 🇬🇭.

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of Ghana has unanimously upheld the constitutionality of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) Act, 2017 (Act 959), resolving a fierce legal debate over the agency's independence.

The apex court ruled that the OSP possesses full, legitimate authority to initiate and prosecute corruption-related cases without needing case-by-case written permission from the Attorney-General (A-G).

However, the Court explicitly clarified that this power is not absolute. Under Article 88 of the 1992 Constitution, the Attorney-General retains ultimate oversight over all criminal prosecutions in the country.

Consequently, the A-G holds the constitutional right to enter a nolle prosequi to discontinue or terminate any criminal proceeding, including those initiated by the OSP.

- This definitive ruling effectively sets aside a controversial Accra High Court judgment from April 2026.
That lower court decision had severely incapacitated the anti-graft agency by declaring its independent prosecutorial actions unconstitutional.
With the Supreme Court's intervention, all previous OSP convictions, asset-freezing orders, and ongoing trials under Section 71 of Act 959 have been fully validated.

US COURT GRANTS OFORI-ATTA PERMANENT RESIDENCY AFTER OSP EVIDENCE FAILS 🇬🇭.

US Immigration Judge David Gardey has ruled that the Office of the Special Prosecutor's (OSP) case against Ghana's former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, lacks credible facts or reliable evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Delivering his decision at the Annandale Immigration Court in Virginia, Judge Gardey granted Ofori-Atta’s I-485 application for adjustment of status, successfully clearing his path to permanent residency in the United States.

- The judge explicitly noted that his review of the OSP affidavit did not uncover any persuasive proof of criminal wrongdoing by the respondent.

- Judge Gardey characterized the documents submitted against Ofori-Atta as being "full of conclusory allegations" and entirely deficient in verifiable facts.

- The court stated that the absence of a detailed criminal complaint for the purpose of extradition suggested that the US Department of Justice also found it difficult to establish any credible claims against him.

- The ruling highlighted that Interpol had already deleted its Red Notice against Ofori-Atta, further weakening the international credibility of the domestic charges.

CHAIRMAN WONTUMI SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IMPRISONMENT WITH HARD LABOUR OVER SAMREBOI GALAMSEY CASE 🇬🇭.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra High Court over the Samreboi illegal mining case.

The landmark ruling, delivered on Monday, July 20, 2026, represents one of the most high-profile convictions in Ghana's ongoing crackdown against illegal mining (galamsey).

- Presiding judge Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay found the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his company, Akonta Mining Company Limited, guilty of offences related to the unauthorised assignment of mineral rights and purposefully facilitating unlicensed mining operations.

- The illegal operations took place on the company's concession in Samreboi, located within the Western Region.

- Along with the 20-year prison sentence, Chairman Wontumi was hit with a personal fine of GH¢120,000 (10,000 penalty units).
His company, Akonta Mining Limited, was also handed corporate fines amounting to 15,000 penalty units per count.

~ A fellow director of the company, Kwame Antwi, who remains at large, was tried and convicted in absentia.

- The state successfully argued its case under the stricter provisions of the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995).
This amendment significantly increased the lower limit of jail terms for galamsey-related offences to 15 years and the upper limit to 25 years.

Before the final judgment, the court rejected a last-minute constitutional challenge from Wontumi's legal team, led by Samuel Atta Akyea, which attempted to refer the vagueness of the mining laws to the Supreme Court to halt the ruling.
Wontumi’s legal defense has expressed deep disappointment with the verdict and publicly announced their intention to file an immediate appeal.

TWO NIGERIAN NATIONALS ARRESTED AT GHANA-TOGO BORDER FOR TAMALE FRAUD-MURDER 🇬🇭.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the Northern Regional Police Command arrested Daniel Victor Eze and David Oko Ewa for the murder of 36-year-old Nkemujika Uzorchuku Eze in Sanzirigu, Tamale.

- On Saturday, July 11, 2026, the victim was discovered dead in his bedroom. Officers found him in a pool of blood with a deep forehead wound and a towel stuffed into his mouth.

- Investigators recovered a wooden pestle from the ransacked crime scene, which is believed to have been used in the fatal attack.

- The victim shared a three-bedroom apartment in Sanzirigu with his wife (Peace Uzorchuku), the two suspects, and another compatriot named Godwin Nwafor.

- Operating on intelligence, police intercepted the suspects at Tatale along the Ghana-Togo border as they attempted to flee the country.

- During interrogation by the Tamale District CID, both suspects confessed to the killing, claiming the victim withheld their shares of proceeds from internet fraud activities.

- Police retrieved stolen items from the suspects, including laptops, tablets, mobile phones, jewellery, wristwatches, and personal documents.

POLICE CHIEF INSPECTOR INVESTIGATED FOR ALLEGEDLY RUNNING ILLEGAL BROTHEL IN KUMASI 🇬🇭.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has officially launched an investigation into allegations that a serving Police Chief Inspector is operating an illegal brothel ("ashawo" joint) at Asafo BB in Kumasi.

- An unnamed Police Chief Inspector stationed within the Ashanti Region.

- The officer allegedly owns 12 unauthorized wooden shacks in the Asafo BB area.

- He is accused of renting out these structures to commercial s*x workers.

~ The allegations came to light during an enforcement exercise by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Task Force.

The team attempted to demolish illegal structures built along the Sabin Stream. During the exercise, squatters in the area violently attacked the task force by pelting them with stones.

- Three officers, including a soldier, were injured.

- An excavator and two pickup trucks were severely damaged.

Following the chaos, KMA officials revealed that a top police officer owned multiple structures in the enclave.

- The Ghana Police Service Public Affairs Unit in Kumasi issued an official press release confirming the commencement of full investigations.

- The Command noted that it takes the allegations with gravity and has assured the general public that developments regarding the investigation will be communicated. Meanwhile, the Kumasi Mayor has indicated that a second phase of the demolition exercise will proceed.
