*SHOULD TEENS BE LIMITED IN USING SOCIAL MEDIA?*

Setting limitations can help your teen learn to use social media positively without suffering from the negative associations.
"Just like you wouldn't give your child the keys to a car for the first time and let them drive away without any practice, you'll need to be there to teach them how to use social media in a healthy way," Charmaraman says. "Together, you can set rules and shared expectations that promote your teen's autonomy while safeguarding them from risks."
Research has found that parental monitoring is tied to less problematic behaviors, like social media addiction or bullying others online, and Charmaraman recommends that parents:
• Restrict access to social media, for example, by setting curfews or time limits on social teens' media usage.
• Monitor social media behavior, by following teens' social media accounts or asking for access.
• Communicate openly about expectations around social media. For example, discuss the impact of cyber bullying, and encourage teens to never say something online that they wouldn't say in person.
If parents are concerned about their teens' social media use, they should talk with them about how social media is making them feel, Chaudhary says. In addition, it's important that parents model these best practices in their own social media use. If you're very concerned about your teens' social media use, seek guidance from a mental health professional.

Social media can affect teenagers negatively or positively, depending on how they use it. Here's how to talk about social media use with your teen.

*DO YOU KNOW WHY WE WEAR WATCH ON OUR LEFT HAND?*

To get straight to the point, it is not mandatory to wear a watch on the left wrist. The right wrist is just as good. The reason most people still have their watch on their left wrist is simple. A watch can get in the way of writing or other actions and because the majority of people are right-handed. Therefore, they wear the watch on the left.

Another advantage of wearing the watch on the wrist of your non-dominant hand is that you can easily turn the crowns. Then you don’t have to take it off every time, for example, to change the time or possibly the date. Unfortunately for left-handers, many crowns are positioned to make it easier for right-handers to turn.

So the next time your daughter or son asks you why…you have an answer to give!

*THE CHOCOLATE HEART*

What is the relationship between chocolates and the heart? Research has shown that eating chocolates that contain 70% of cocoa helps the heart function properly. Below are some benefits of eating dark chocolate.

1. Improves heart health: The antioxidants in dark chocolate have been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of clotting and increase blood circulation to the heart, thus lowering the risks of stroke, coronary heart disease and death from heart disease.

2. Stabilise the immune system: Flavonols (group of flavonoids found in fruits, cocoa etc.) prevent the immune system from going into overdrive and reduce oxidative stress, which is an imbalance caused by cells fighting against free radicals and a common cause of many diseases.

3. Fights diabetes: Epicatechin (flavonoid compounds with antioxidant properties) protects cells, makes them stronger and supports the processes that help the body to use insulin better, which might prevent or combat diabetes.
4. Promotes brain function: Flavonols in dark chocolate have a positive impact on brain function, including better reaction time, visual-spatial awareness and stronger memory. Though research is ongoing, one reason for this may be that flavonols increase blood flow to the brain.

5. Enhance athletic performance: The epicatechin in dark chocolate increases the production of nitric oxide in the blood, which supports circulation and reduces the amount of oxygen an athlete uses while engaged in moderately intense exercise. This allows the athlete to maintain workout intensity for longer.

6. Decreases stress: People who ate dark chocolate reported that they felt less stressed, and researchers confirmed that after eating dark chocolate, there were reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This may be related to dark chocolate’s effects on heart health, since stress is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

*Happy April Fool’s Day 2022*

Just like every year, April Fool’s Day will be celebrated on April 1, which is today Friday, 1st April 2022. It is an annual custom whereby people prank each other and do practical jokes just to have a good laugh. While it is not really a holiday, people plan days in advance on how they can prank their friends and family.

According to historians, the day started being celebrated after Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar back in 1952, and ruled that the new calendar would start from January 1. Prior to this, New Year used to be celebrated in 1st April.
Hence, those who still celebrated the New Year on April 1 were seen as fools and uncivilized.

It is understood that while many refused to accept the change and continued following the Julian calendar, France became the first country to accept and implement the new calendar.
It is because of this reason that the general takeaway was that those who refused to follow the new calendar were considered to be fools and made fun of by those who did. It is one of the days when people get away with almost anything, it is advisable to not go overboard with jokes.

Watch out for a prank from a loved one today!!!

THE READER LIVES LONGER

A saying goes like an apple a day keeps you away from the doctor, which is also true for a reader. A book a day keeps you away from the doctor and the grave. Most people only focus on the health of the other organs of the body with the exception of the brain. The brain is a vital organ of the human body because it is the centre which controls and coordinates all psychological functions of body systems. Therefore the human brain needs to be healthy as well in order to have a stable mental functionality.

1. Reading strengthens connections in your brain
Reading facilitates new connections between different parts of the brain. A small 2013 study found that reading a novel increased communication between parts of the brain that control language processing. It also created long term changes in the bilateral somatosensory cortex, the part of the brain that processes sensory information.
Sabrina Romanoff, PsyD, a clinical psychologist in New York City, says reading creates neurons in the brain, a process known as neurogenesis. Neurons are cells that send messages and transmit information between different areas in the brain.
"Reading material that requires thought, consideration, and effort to metabolize what's being described leads to the creation of new neurons in your brain," Romanoff says. "These neurons also increase new neuronal connections, both with each other and older networks, which accelerates processing speed."

2. Reading prevents age-related cognitive decline
Cognition includes the ability to learn, remember, and make judgments. Attention and memory are the two aspects of cognitive functioning most likely to be affected by age. Scientists believe reading can reduce age-related cognitive decline and protect cognitive function.
A large 14-year study published in 2020 found those who read one or more times a week were less likely to have cognitive decline at 6-year and 14-year intervals. After 14-years, older people who read more often had a reduced risk of cognitive decline compared to those who read less often.
Reading is even associated with a lower risk of dementia. A very large 2018 study in China tracked people aged 65 and older over the course of five years and found late-life participation in intellectual activities like reading was associated with a lower risk of dementia several years later.

3. Reading reduces stress levels
Research has found reading for just 30 minutes can reduce the physical and emotional signs of stress.
A small 2009 study of full-time undergraduate students compared the effects of yoga, humorous videos, and reading on stress levels. It found students who read news articles for 30 minutes experienced a decrease in physical markers of stress, like heart rate and blood pressure, compared to before they began the activity. They also had lower scores on stress surveys.
The study concluded "neutral" reading material, or material that doesn't elicit a strong emotional feeling, is relaxing, and decreases arousal of the sympathetic nervous system which directs the body's response to stressful situations and danger. However, reading the news may not be relaxing for everyone. Instead, you can opt for novels, short stories, or other reading materials.

4. Reading may even help you live longer
Not only is reading beneficial for brain health, but it is also linked to a longer life. A large 12-year study published in 2017 found reading books is associated with a 20% reduction in risk of mortality compared to those who didn't read books.
Reading may not cause you to live longer on its own, but it might be associated with an overall healthy lifestyle and a lower risk of early death.

5. Reading improves memory and concentration
While the brain isn't a muscle, it still benefits from exercise. Similar to how lifting weights makes our bodies stronger, reading is a cognitively demanding process that can strengthen memory and concentration.
When humans read, we create a "mental map" of written text. This mental map helps us process words we are reading and aids in knowledge recall and memory. Romanoff says a regular reading routine helps the brain "practice" mental processes that contribute to memory functioning.
"Our brains also mentally process written words as if we were writing them," Romanoff says. "These processes require mental effort and concentration. With continued reinforcement, there is a greater capacity for memory functioning."
A 2013 study of elderly men and women found people who participated in mentally challenging activities like reading and writing had a slower rate of memory decline earlier and later in life compared to those who did not engage in such activities.

*How to make reading a habit?*

Uma Naidoo, MD, a nutritional psychiatrist and the director of nutritional & lifestyle psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, says that the easiest way to start reading more is to schedule it into your daily life.
"Like with any activity that promotes our better brain health — such as how we eat, sleep, or exercise – we need to create space for these," Naidoo says. "Setting aside a half-hour or an hour, for example, before bed or during an afternoon break could be a good idea to make sure you are reading."

Other tips to start reading more include:
• Keeping a book with you when traveling or commuting to work

• Reading the news every morning

• Reading books on topics you want to learn more about or are interested in

• Reading a book before watching the movie version

• Getting a library card

• Be patient — reading, like any skill, takes time to develop
