Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was created to protect patients from such hardship. Yet access remains uneven. Some of the country’s most advanced publicly funded hospitals — including the University of Ghana Medical Centre, the Bank Hospital, University Hospital – Legon and the Trust Hospital — do not accept NHIS cards.
