Aduamoa is one of the principal towns in Kwahu. It is of the Benkum Division of the Kwahu Traditional Council; in fact, it is the next in command to Abene as the head of the Benkum Division. Nonetheless, Aduamoa is mostly referred to as the “Atadwekrom” in the whole Kwahu, due to the unique and original taste of the Tigernuts.
Historically, the people of Aduamoa are believed to be migrants of Akoten in Kumawu and Asanteman. They migrated in bits to Aduamoa due to the war that was going on in the Asante kingdom, population growth and trading activities.
However, the Asona royal family who has a crow as their totem, founded Aduamoa is considered a microcosm of the historical Kumawu Royal Kingdom which was based at Akoten.
After the invasion of the Kwamamu Kingdom by the Akyems and other coastal areas-combined forces, Nana Kwadwo Boama, together with his elders gathered the people and left.
The people, together with their leader Nana Kwadwo Boama first settled at Anankuro, an environ of Kumawu, then to Suna at Kumawu. Other natives of Suna joined Nana Kwadwo Boama and his entourage; those natives make up the Korontihene stool of the modern day Aduamoa.
After passing through all of these towns, they finally settled at Beposo in Fɛwiase which means their lives in the Asante kingdom has ended. One faithful day, a hunter named “Adu” went hunting; in his search for game, he saw a river lying under a very big “Odum” tree from a distance. When he got close, it was very clean in nature, he then went ahead to fill his wooden bottle with it. After hunting, he went straight to the chief’s palace where he told him about the river he saw;and the land beyond the river. He suggested to the Chief that due to their current situation, they should dominate the land, and make the place theirs. This sounded good in the ears of the chief, but he could not believe it entirely. He then said to Adu the hunter that if he send people to the place and they come back with a negative response, then he will be punished severely for playing with the people’s situation. But Adu insisted the chief send his men to the place. Finally, the chief did; and after the arrival of his men, they told him the exact things Adu told him. He was really happy to hear the news;because he will be able to fix the people’s problems. The chief then instructed the town crier to inform the people to come to the palace. When they heard the news after being to the palace, they got their belongings and journeyed to the new land. When they were leaving Fɛwiase, they named it Dadamu/Dadaso which means “OLD”. Immediately they got there, they saw everything for themselves, and they realized it was really true. So they said “Sɛɛ Adu kaa yɛ a, ɔmoa”, which means “Adu spoke about this, and it was true. He was not lying after all”. and that was how name Aduamoa came to stay.
People of Aduamoa are into agriculture, but what they are popularly known for is tigernut which is known by many as “Atadwe”. This fruit was brought to the town by a man called Ata. This man was also a hunter. He went for hunting one faithful day, but when he was returning from the bush, he saw these green plants and white flowers gathered around a stream. Out of curiosity, he decided to know what that plant was. This was no mere plant, it had a sweet scented fragrance. Initially, he thought it was just a normal flowering plant, but on the other side, he wonder why a plant in that form did not have any fruit on top of it. All the same, he planned to uproot some of the plants, and bring it home to plant.
As soon as he uprooted some, he saw some round objects under them. He then fetched water from the stream to wash and see what they were. After washing ,he got a stone to break it;in order to get out the Kernel. Unfortunately, he could not get any kernel from it. The only thing he saw in the kernel type fruit was white droplets. He tasted it, and it was really good. He uprooted as much as he could and brought it Aduamoah. He then introduced it to the people of the town, and after tasting, they were all surprised to see and taste a fruit like that. The people took some to their various homes. On their way home, Ata the hunter was the topic for discussion; and all they kept saying was “Ei Ata adwe yi deɛ,ɛdɛ na ɛyɛ anika nso” this statement simply means “Ata’s kernel is sweet and attractive”. And that was how we got the name “Atadwe(Ata-Adwe)”.
Aduamoa is ruled by the royals in the Asona clan. According to Aduamoa leadership, the current Aduamoahene Nana Ahea Tutu Brempong || is the fifth Chief of Aduamoa.
