The ‘Nkukor Nkitinkiti’initiative, first proposed by former President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2024 general elections, is designed as a major poverty alleviation programme targeting households interested in poultry farming.

Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive day-old chicks after the construction of mini hencoops to accommodate them. The government will also provide support in the form of feed and veterinary services, with the expectation that proceeds from poultry sales will help households meet their financial needs.

Despite its promise, the programme has faced public criticism, with some Ghanaians accusing government of failing to deliver on its earlier commitments.

However, Minister Eric Opoku maintains that the initiative remains a top priority.
“We are hoping to see the programme launched by the end of this month or in the first week of October. His Excellency, the President, will officially launch it and distribution will begin in the various constituencies for the beneficiary farmers,” he stated.

This, he said, is largely because pension funds are tied up in “unproductive ventures that do not provide adequate protection against inflation.” By contrast, he noted that foreign pension funds and sovereign wealth funds have taken bold positions in mining and extractives, reaping steady and inflation-proof returns.

“It is ironic that while global funds are investing in our mining sector and profiting from it, Ghana’s own pensions are exposed to underperforming assets,” he stated.

Mr. Gyamfi urged policymakers and regulators to reorient Ghana’s pension investment strategy by channeling significant portions into the country’s gold value chain. He argued that gold has historically proven to be a safe-haven asset, especially in times of economic volatility, and would provide Ghanaian workers with better security in their retirement years.

A wave of cattle deaths has been recorded in Disah, a community in the North Gonja District, following an alleged overdose from vaccinations administered by an Ivorian brought into the area.

Speaking to Channel One News, North Gonja District Environmental Health Officer, Adam Mary, said her office was alerted by community members about the incident. A team was immediately dispatched to investigate.Buy vitamins and supplements

She explained that inquiries on the ground revealed that a farmer had engaged the Ivorian to vaccinate his cattle, an exercise that reportedly led to the deaths.

“According to the sources and investigations that were carried out, some farmers went to Côte d’Ivoire and brought somebody to come and immunise their animals. After the immunisation, the farmers realised that their animals were dying. “According to them, the immunisation was done on Friday, on Saturday, and on Sunday, the death took place,” she said.

Engineers & Planners (E\&P), a major Ghanaian mining contractor, has acquired full equity in Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd and Upwest Resources Ghana Ltd, reviving the long-stalled Black Volta and Sankofa gold projects in Ghana’s Upper West Region. Dormant for nearly 20 years due to legal disputes and funding issues, the projects will now proceed under E\&P’s leadership with a plan to verify and repay debts, and begin mine construction.

With gold prices above \$3,000/oz and Ghana under an IMF program, the revival offers economic and fiscal benefits. The deal marks a shift toward greater local ownership in a sector dominated by foreign firms. While communities express cautious optimism, E\&P’s success will be seen as a key test of Ghanaian capacity to manage large-scale mining ventures.

According to Bloomberg, the Ghana cedi is the world's worst performer in the third quarter.

The setback comes less than five months after Bloomberg named the cedi the world’s best-performing currency in April, following a 16 percent gain against the US dollar since the start of the year.

That rally helped ease inflationary pressures, pushing consumer inflation down to 21.2 per cent, the lowest in eight months at the time.

Now, the currency, which had ranked first globally on the back of strong gold prices, has weakened by 13 per cent in the current quarter.

According to Bloomberg, its data showed this was the steepest fall worldwide, erasing part of the 50 per cent gain recorded between April and June.

According to the Ministry, the merger is being driven by AT’s precarious financial state, with the company incurring more than $10 million in losses within just eight months of this year. Mr. George noted that continuing to fund such losses with taxpayers’ money was unsustainable.

“These losses are funded by taxpayers. That is money that should be building roads, water systems, and schools. We cannot keep pouring public funds into unsustainable operations,” he said.
