🇩🇿 🇩🇿

Sixty-five years after France's first nuclear test in the Sahara, an international coalition is urging France to address the impacts of 57 atomic tests conducted between 1960 and 1966. These organizations highlight ongoing health, environmental, and memorial consequences for the region. France's first atomic bomb, "Gerboise Bleue," detonated on February 13, 1960, at Reggane, was five times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, causing widespread disaster. Between 1960 and 1966, colonial France conducted 57 additional tests at Reggane and In Ecker, including atmospheric, underground, and plutonium explosions. Local populations endure severe health issues like cancer, malformations, and chronic disorders. On International Day Against Nuclear Tests, twenty international organizations, including ICAN, demanded France officially recognize committed crimes, publish test archives, clean contaminated sites, and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This initiative follows a September 2024 appeal by UN rapporteurs that received no response. Health organizations point out a disparity in compensation, with only two Algerian victims compensated since 2010, compared to 400 Polynesians, highlighting a serious injustice.

🇳🇬 Over 23,000 people still missing in Nigeria 🇳🇬

The International Committee of the Red Cross reports over 23,659 people remain missing in Nigeria, leaving 13,595 families in anguish, predominantly women. Protection of Family Links Team Leader of ICRC in Damaturu, Mr Ishaku Luka, stated that 68 percent of those searching are women, and 59 percent of the missing were minors when they disappeared. Yobe State alone accounts for 2,500 cases. Mr Luka highlighted the devastating impact of armed conflicts, disasters, and migration on families, urging greater responsibility in preventing disappearances. He noted that by June 30, ICRC collected 451 new cases and closed 515 in Nigeria, reuniting seven children. Head of ICRC Sub-delegation in Damaturu, Mr Rashid Hassan, emphasized that families of the missing should not be left alone and called for authorities to clarify fates, protect dignity, and address needs. Globally, over 94,000 people were newly registered as missing in 2024, bringing the total to 284,400, a fraction of the real number.

🇪🇬 Denmark calls on the European Union to impose sanctions on Israel and suspend the trade agreement. 🇪🇬

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen urged the European Union to take action against Israel due to the situation in Gaza, proposing sanctions on some Israeli ministers and suspending the trade chapter of the partnership agreement. He stated during an EU foreign ministers meeting in Copenhagen that Denmark is prepared to suspend trade cooperation and impose sanctions. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares criticized the EU's slow response. Calls for a tougher stance on Israel have increased within the EU, especially after claims of famine in Gaza. While some EU nations like France, Spain, the Netherlands, and Ireland support suspending trade cooperation, others like Germany and Italy have not yet announced their support. European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Haja Lahbib emphasized the need for a unified EU stance on Gaza.

🇪🇬 Colombia bans coal exports to Israel in response to Gaza war 🇪🇬

Colombia announced a ban on all coal exports to Israel. The Colombian government stated this move is in response to Israeli military operations, which Bogota views as violating international humanitarian law and threatening world peace. Infobae reported that the decision was signed by Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism Diana Marcela Morales Rojas, Minister of Foreign Affairs Rosa Yolanda Bellavicencio, Minister of Finance Herman Avila Plasas, and Minister of Mines and Energy Edwin Palma Ejea. The ban will remain until International Court of Justice provisional measures are implemented or circumstances change. Colombia, a UN Human Rights Council member from 2025-2027, stated the decision aligns with international obligations, including the UN Charter, the Genocide Convention, and WTO exceptions for public morals or wartime. The "national security" clause in the Colombia-Israel trade agreement was also cited. Minister Morales Rojas explained the aim is to prevent Colombian coal from contributing to Israeli military activities in Gaza. This makes Colombia the first Latin American coal-exporting country to halt sales to Israel, reinforcing Colombia's commitment to human rights, international peace, and vulnerable populations.

🇩🇿 🇩🇿

The Algerian Television office in Gaza, where Palestinian correspondent Wissam Abou Zeid works, was significantly damaged on Saturday, August 30, 2025, during an Israeli bombardment. The attack, which targeted neighboring buildings, caused extensive damage to the office. Abou Zeid and his team filmed the scenes of the Israeli raid, documenting the devastation and the fear experienced under bombardment.

Meanwhile, at a UN Security Council meeting, Algerian Ambassador Amar Bendjama read the farewell letter of Mariam Abu Daqqa, a 33-year-old Palestinian journalist killed in an Israeli strike. The diplomat denounced Israeli strategies impacting media coverage and highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, calling it a "living hell." The Security Council meeting revealed divisions, with 14 members condemning starvation as a weapon of war and calling for a ceasefire, while the United States declined to sign the joint statement. The human toll in Palestine stands at nearly 63,000 victims, and Israel faces genocide charges.

🇪🇬 Egypt aims to reduce oil and natural gas emissions by 65% by 2030. 🇪🇬

Egypt, under the government of Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, is pursuing a comprehensive plan to become a regional energy hub and reduce petroleum emissions. The country aims to cut natural gas consumption by 65% by 2030, aligning with the World Bank’s global initiative to end routine flaring by the same year. This commitment reflects a move towards environmental standards and a low-carbon economy. The petroleum and mineral resources sector plans to increase its GDP contribution from 5.8% to approximately 8% by 2030, boost investments, and expand exports. This strategy, approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate, also includes rationalizing fuel subsidies and expanding clean energy projects.

🇳🇬 Senator backs bill to decriminalise attempted su***de 🇳🇬

Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong of Cross River South Senatorial District has reaffirmed his commitment to the Su***de Prevention Bill, which aims to decriminalize attempted su***de and create a framework for mental health support in Nigeria. The bill passed its first reading in February. The senator made this known during a visit from the Su***de Prevention Advocacy Working Group, a coalition of experts and advocates, who appreciated his sponsorship. Prof. Taiwo Sheikh, convener of the coalition and Continental Representative for LifeLine International, highlighted that criminalizing attempted su***de stigmatizes vulnerable individuals and acts as a barrier to seeking help. He noted that Nigeria records about 16,000 su***de deaths annually, with many cases unreported, predominantly affecting young people aged 15-29. The proposed bill seeks to remove punitive laws and establish services, funding, training, helplines, and data systems for prevention and response. Senator Ekpenyong pledged to champion the bill during its second reading, working with colleagues for a robust debate. Aisha Bubah, Executive Director of the Sunshine Series, emphasized the urgent need for legislation, stating that every delay means more lives lost.
