National Executives of PRINPAG visit Algerian Ambassador to Ghana

The National Executives of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) have met with the Algerian Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Ali Redjel in his office in Accra. The meeting, which was at the invitation of the Ambassador, was to discuss how PRINPAG can support the Algerian Embassy to deepen bilateral relations between Ghanaian and Algerian journalists.

Among others, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of the media in all walks of life, including foreign relations and diplomacy. He said the media is a powerful tool that, when properly resourced, could support the development agenda of every institution through the dissemination of accurate news and information.
According to him, the Embassy is interested in creating a lasting relationship with the media in Ghana and sees PRINPAG as a strategic partner that can contribute to the dissemination of accurate information, hence the meeting.

He highlighted the historical and cultural ties between Ghana and Algeria, dating back to the independence struggles of both countries.

In his remarks, President of PRINPAG, Andrew Edwin Arthur, who led the five-member delegation, lauded the initiative and assured that, the Association stands in readiness to project accurate news on Algeria.
He sought the support and guidance of the Algerian embassy to access credible sources and contacts in Algeria for professional exchange programmes.

PRINPAG agreed to support the Algerian embassy for good collaboration.

The Embassy has agreed with the proposal to facilitate the formation of a partnership between PRINPAG and the Algerian Press Service (APS) for the exchange of news and information about Ghana and Algeria for the development of both countries in all sectors and on African issues.

This would culminate in training and exchange programmes with Algerian journalists so as to learn from their best practices and experiences, among others.

There would also be a deliberate promotion of accurate and balanced reporting on the bilateral relations between Ghana and Algeria, especially in the areas of economic, trade, investment, agriculture, infrastructural development and cultural exchanges.

THE THUGGERY AND BARBARIC ATTACK ON UNITED TELEVISION (UTV) ON SATURDAY NIGHT UNFORTUNATE*

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), has noted with deep concern, the barbaric and uncivilized attack on United Television (UTV) by some thugs during the station's United Showbiz programme on Saturday, October, 7, 2023. The thugs invaded and disrupted the prime time show while it was being aired live.

As an Association of media owners, we abhor these attacks on journalists and media houses in the country and we condemn the attack in no uncertain terms and without any reservation. We are concerned about the continued occurrence of such acts in a country that used to boast proudly of its rankings on global press freedom indexes.

It is important to note that, recently Ghana dropped two places - from 60th in 2022 to 62nd in 2023 in the annual Global Press Freedom ranking by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and a deliberate action to restore hope on the Ghanaian media landscape is urgently needed.

However, actions such as what occurred at UTV on Saturday night further enhances the deterioration of confidence and erodes all gains made in achieving a positive ranking in the years ahead.

It is however heartwarming to hear that, the police moved in swiftly to arrest 16 members of the thugs to avert a possible blood bath.

We at PRINPAG would like to take this opportunity to call on all stakeholders, especially the Police to expedite action on the 16 persons arrested and arraign them before a court of competent jurisdiction so as to serve as a deterrent to others.

We wish to further encourage journalists in the country not to be frightened or cowed by these incidents, rather, they should resolve to do their work as the Fourth Estate of the realm without fear or favor going by the ethics of their profession.

Long Live Press Freedom, Long Live PRINPAG.

STATEMENT BY THE PRIVATE NEWSPAPERS AND ONLINE NEWS PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION OF GHANA (PRINPAG) ON THE WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY 2023

PRINPAG SALUTES ALL MEDIA PRACTITIONERS FOR STERLING PERFORMANCE AMIDST CHALLENGES

Fellow Media Practitioners and Members of the prestigious Fourth Estate, as the World marks this year’s World Press Freedom Day today, May 3, 2023, on the theme: “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights,” the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), salutes all media practitioners in Ghana, who have sacrificed to take up the crucial role of the media practice in a democratic society.

On this day, it is important to continue highlighting the need to protect journalists and their sourcess from censorship, intimidation, and any act of violence.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day must serve as a wake-up call to all lovers of media freedom to stand up and to defend media practitioners by condemning all acts that end up negatively affecting the practice of journalism in this country.

It is also a wake-up call to all lovers of media growth to partner the Ghanaian and to support them in these difficult times to stand on their feet to defend our nation and our enviable democracy, which has become the toast of many in recent times.
On this special occasion, PRINPAG would want to seize the opportunity to urge the Government’s media handlers to be proactive and to engage media owners, editors and senior journalists the more in an attempt to save the Ghanaian media from dying.

It is the prayer of PRINPAG that, the Government, through its handlers will put in place mechanisms to ensure that, all media outlets are supported to stand on their feet, whichever is feasible to do, to foster a close partnership and collaboration between the media and the government in the interest of the development of mother Ghana.

We again urge the Government’s media handlers not to discriminate in their dealings with the media but to open up and to bring all media practitioners and their organisations on board to promote the national agenda.

PRINPAG is of the view that, as we celebrate this year’s World Press Freedom Day, it is the desire of the Association and its members that, government reconsiders or restrategises on its media policy, particularly the distribution of state sponsored adverts so as to benefit the majority of media houses in the country, a move PRINPAG believes, will go a long way in sustaining the Ghanaian media and saving them from eventual collapse.

PRINPAG again urges the Government and its media handlers to consider bringing all media houses onto a common platform, irrespective of perceived political persuasion as a way of making information readily accessible to all to avoid the situation where due to lack of information some media houses are left with no option than to engage in speculations and conjectures to survive,

This way, the Government and its media handlers will be promoting press freedom and pluralism of the media, which is crucial for our development in these contemporary times, not forgetting the need to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression, as enshrined in Chapter 5 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

For us at PRINPAG, the theme for this year’s World Press Freedom Day emphasizes the crucial role of press freedom, media independence and pluralism as well as the freedom of expression in upholding all human rights. The theme also marks the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day and coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Conference and its Declaration and Programme of Action on Human Rights, as well.

PRINPAG is of the firm belief that, our Common Agenda in the fight against media oppression and press freedom, is to enforce the right to access information that allows us to seek, receive and disseminate information, ideas, concepts and beliefs across borders and cultures.

As a result of the widely accepted role of the media in today’s contemporary World, PRINPAG is amazed by the continued attempts to silence the media around the globe, with old methods of censorship, violence and harassment accompanied by increasingly pervasive digital attacks.
On this occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, PRINPAG calls on all media stakeholders, especially the government, to as a matter of urgency, prioritize the welfare and wellbeing of journalist throughout the country so as to ensure that, they are better placed to lend support to the national agenda through the practice of their chosen profession.

We also call for a swift release of outcomes/information on investigations into deaths and attacks on Journalists in their line of duty in Ghana.

For us at PRINPAG, we will continue to uphold the fundamental human rights of all persons and also use our mediums to protect and promote the rights of all persons in the country and these we will do by strictly displaying professionalism and the understanding of the nuances of the journalism profession.

Ayekoo to all media practitioners in Ghana as we urge you all to stay focused and united to prosecute the national agenda irrespective of perceived political ideologies.

HOW MTN AND PRINPAG (MEDIA OWNERS) CAN EFFECTIVELY COLLABORATE TO ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCES OF THEIR CUSTOMERS

Within the rapidly transforming paradigm of the telecommunication industry over the last decade, alongside its increasing market saturation and fierce competition from industry players, many telcom companies have made Customer Service Experience their focus. They have adopted various strategies as feedback mechanisms aimed at ensuring that users of their products gets their monies worth and are satisfied. One of such laudable strategies is this forum that has been introduced by MTN Ghana and we at PRINPAG are happy to be part-takers.

PRINPAG - as the name suggests consists of Owners, Publishers and Senior Editors of Private Newspapers and Online News Portals. A good number of our members depend on services such as those that are provided by MTN and at this forum, we are proud to say that MTN has been very efficient and responsive to our needs.

However, we don’t think it would be out of place if we should ask that the collaboration between we Media Owners and MTN is further deepened through some other innovative means that can birth a win-win for both sides.

For example, media owners like PRINPAG which consists of Print and Online owners and Editors can offer MTN the opportunity to create the next level of customer engagement and impact through unique capabilities that come from our wide reach, rich advertising solutions, innovative business platforms, and powerful measurement and insights.

We believe that PRINPAG and MTN can work together for better insights into the telco’ customer experiences.

Also, an MTN-PRINPAG collaboration can bring and update customers of the opportunities , products and offers available to the public - our online news wing can create links and regular survey’s that can serve as a direct link to MTN customer experience portal.

Our Online unit can also perform constant scrutiny of content to ensure information validity and take prompt actions in cases of non-adherence to the established terms, they can also develop dedicated API platforms and analytics engines specifically for MTN-specific needs.

In order to design and implement mutually win-win propositions and effectively realize the planned synergies, we hereby propose two relationship models, that we believe can foster closer partnerships between MTN and PRINPAG to enhance effective customer experience:

CULTURE TRANSFORMATION WITH MEDIA OWNERS AS FOCUS:

PRINPAG is of the firm believe that, MTN only has a limited understanding of the opportunities available to them through our platforms. An MTN-PRINPAG partnership thus should start at the very top of the communication unit and with a strong buy-in should descend down to all levels within the organization. Repositioning responsibility for social media strategy within the organizational structure.

When agreed, leveraging PRINPAG platforms to achieve improved customer experience must be clearly communicated and linked to specific responsible units in the organizational structure of MTN for efficiency.

CONSTANT SCRUTINY OF CONTENT.

As media owners, constant scrutiny and monitoring of customer reactions can help us to point out customer dis-affections, which would enable us prompt MTN to act swiftly on the concerns of their customers. This focus is critical for reputation management, especially for MTN that clearly has no intentions to lose its long standing reputation to other Telecommunication Companies in the country.

PRINPAG asserts a successful collaboration with MTN will create the next level of l
Lcustomer engagement and impact, leveraging the unique and powerful capabilities that our platforms offer in the engagement of customers.

To achieve value, both PRINPAG and MTN must take steps to address some of the exiting concerns and processes to effectively realize the planned synergies.

Given the dynamism of an evolving customer preferences, increasing competitive intensity, new technological advances, and rapid enhancement in social media platform capabilities — MTN must constantly strive to remain close to this shifting optimal point by building synergy with media owners in Ghana to promote their customer experience at all levels of engagement.
