He started from the bottom… where many would have given up.

A young man, working as a toilet attendant in Bantama, faced life with nothing but hope, faith, and determination.

But he refused to let his circumstances define his future.

Through years of relentless hard work, discipline, and unwavering belief in himself, he rose step by step, challenge by challenge.

Today, that same man stands as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).

Prof Bernard Kumi-Boateng is more than a success story he is living proof that greatness is not determined by where you begin, but by the courage to keep moving forward.

This is not just his story.
This is a message to every dreamer: keep going.

We joined the Women’s Chapter of the Ghana Mine Workers’ Union on a working visit to their branch at the AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The visit formed part of activities to recognize and celebrate the immense contributions of women in the mining sector. It also provided an important platform for engagement and dialogue on key issues affecting women in mining, as well as matters concerning the growth and welfare of women within the union.

During the interaction, participants discussed topics relating to women’s rights, workplace safety, inclusiveness, and the need to strengthen support systems that empower women to thrive in the mining industry.

The engagement reaffirmed the commitment of stakeholders to promote equality, fairness, and opportunities for women while advancing the broader objectives of the union and the mining sector.

Today, as the world celebrates International Women’s Day, we at Mining Watch Africa proudly join the global community to honor the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women everywhere.

This year, we celebrate under the theme: “Every Woman Must Be Counted.”

Women play a critical role in shaping families, communities, industries, and nations. From the mines to the markets, from boardrooms to classrooms, their voices, efforts, and leadership continue to transform our society.

At Mining Watch Africa, we believe that true progress in the mining and industrial sectors can only be achieved when every woman is recognized, included, protected, and empowered. Their rights, safety, and opportunities must never be overlooked.

Today, we celebrate the women who continue to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and inspire the next generation. Your courage and dedication are building a stronger and more equitable future for all.

Every woman matters. Every voice matters. Every woman must be counted.

Happy International Women’s Day to all the incredible women across Africa and the world.

On this day, the world pauses to recognize the strength, resilience, and achievements of women and girls everywhere as we commemorate International Women’s Day.

At the University of Mines and Technology, a special gathering brings together young minds, industry leaders, and advocates for change. The event, organized by the Ghana Mine Workers’ Union in collaboration with Girls in Science and Technology (GIST) and the University of Mines and Technology, seeks to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of women in science and mining.

Under the theme “Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls,” the program creates a platform for open dialogue and meaningful engagement between experienced professionals and young female students who aspire to shape the future of science and technology.

Executives and members of the Ghana Mine Workers’ Union take their time to interact with the girls, sharing knowledge, experiences, and encouragement. Their presence symbolizes a commitment to building a mining industry where opportunity, respect, and fairness are accessible to all.

A major focus of the discussion centers on rights and justice, particularly the critical issue of sexual harassment. Through honest conversations, the participants are reminded that every woman and girl deserves to learn, work, and grow in environments that are safe, respectful, and inclusive.

The discussions emphasize awareness, courage, and the power of collective action. The message is clear: when women and girls understand their rights and are supported by strong institutions and communities, they can break barriers and lead transformative change.

As the program unfolds, inspiration fills the room. Young women are reminded that the future of science, technology, and mining is not only theirs to enter but theirs to shape.

Because empowering women and girls today means building a stronger, fairer, and more innovative world tomorrow.

Water is Life: Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Commissions 40,000-Litre Water System for Mehuntem Community

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has officially handed over a 40,000-litre capacity small-town water supply system to the Mehuntem community, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainable community development.

This newly commissioned facility will provide safe, reliable, and sustainable access to potable water for households, schools, and public institutions within the community. With more than 1,000 residents expected to benefit, the project directly addresses long-standing water challenges in Mehuntem.

Access to clean water is fundamental to public health. The new system is expected to:
• Reduce the risk of waterborne diseases
• Improve hygiene and sanitation practices
• Enhance overall community wellbeing
• Strengthen resilience within the beneficiary population

Funded at a cost of over US$33,800, the initiative underscores the Foundation’s ongoing investment in improving quality of life across its host communities.

The project was executed in partnership with the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly and the Mehuntem Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) Committee, ensuring local ownership, operational sustainability, and long-term impact.

Through collaborative efforts such as this, the Foundation continues to demonstrate that access to clean water is not merely a basic necessity it is the cornerstone of healthier, stronger, and more resilient communities.

Leaders will change.
Your boss may be replaced.
Your salary may increase or decrease.

But one thing remains constant life goes on.

No matter the circumstances, the world will continue to move. That is why your safety must always be your personal responsibility and your number one priority. If anything happens to you today, work will continue. Business will continue. Replacements will be found. But your family can never replace you.

Think about your future.
Think about your children.
Think about your wife.
Think about your parents and everyone who depends on you.

How does it feel when you hear that someone has died on site while simply trying to make a living? It is painful. It is avoidable. And it leaves a permanent scar on families.
Always consider the persons you are working with and set a good standard.
Do not just show up to work set a premium standard.
For the Standard you walk pass is the standard you set.

Do not cut corners follow procedures.
Do not ignore risks control them.

Go to work safely.
Work safely.
Return home safely.

Your family needs you. Always remember that.
