Can Ghana end AIDS by 2030?

Major health facilities are reportedly rationing antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) as critical medicines remain stuck at Ghana’s ports, raising concerns about access to treatment for people living with HIV.

With more than 90% of HIV prevention commodities funded by development partners, Ghana faces a critical question: Can it sustain the financing needed to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030?

The National Identification Authority has commenced 24-hour Ghana Card registration services at Labone as part of efforts to support the government’s flagship 24-hour economy programme.

The facility operates in three shifts, allowing Ghanaians to access the Ghana Card beyond conventional working hours, including weekends.

Mr Wisdom Kwaku Deku, the Executive Secretary of NIA speaking after the tour of the facility, said the initiative was to make Ghana Card services more accessible and convenient, particularly for workers and others who may be unable to visit registration centres during regular working hours.

SONABEL, the operator of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, has postponed the controlled spillage of the dam, which was initially scheduled to begin on August 11, 2026.

This is because the reservoir water level of the dam is currently 233.08 metres, still below the reservoir water level of 234.50 metres required to trigger its spillage.

Mr Jesse Kazapoe, the Head of the White Volta Basin of the Water Resources Commission, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga.

Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) and the Social Investment Fund (SIF) have signed an agreement to disburse US$5 million to support women, youth and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises under the Ghana Women and Youth Empowerment, Employment and Social Cohesion Access to Finance Compact.

The 36-month programme is expected to benefit about 3,000 people through affordable financing, business development services and financial literacy training to promote entrepreneurship, job creation and economic resilience.
