SUNDAY'S MORNING DEVOTION (SMD:0100)
TOPIC:
Grace For The Humble
Matthew 11:29 (NET) Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
There was a time in my life when I did not fully understand the importance of fasting in my walk with the Lord. Many of the explanations people gave for fasting did not seem convincing to me.
One day, however, I had a conversation with a friend who had been listening to sermons by Derek Prince. He explained that fasting is powerful because it is one of the clearest ways a person humbles himself before God.
At that moment, something clicked in my heart. Scripture says that God gives grace to the humble (see James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5–6). This explains why fasting often leads to increased spiritual strength and sensitivity. Fasting weakens the dominance of the flesh and positions the heart in humility before God. That posture attracts grace and divine help.
When humanity fell into sin, man lost the glory and dominion God originally intended for him. Scripture says in Psalm 49:12 that man, in honor, did not remain but became like the beasts that perish. Yet God, in His mercy, determined to redeem mankind.
For redemption to happen, a qualified man had to pay the price for sin. But no ordinary descendant of Adam could do this because all had sinned (Romans 3:23). So Jesus came as the sinless One, conceived by the Spirit of God and free from the sinful nature inherited through Adam. He became the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world.
What makes this even more astonishing is the humility involved. Jesus, though fully divine, willingly laid aside His glory and became a servant. He humbled Himself to the point of death, even death on a cross. Such humility has never been matched, and the glory that followed it is also unmatched (see Philippians 2:7–11).
Go into today remembering that God gives grace to the humble. If you desire to walk in greater grace and spiritual power, follow the example of Christ in humility. Guard your heart from pride and willingly submit yourself to God.
Prayer:
Lord, deliver me from every root of pride. Teach me true humility and help me follow the example of Christ. Let Your grace rest mightily upon my life. Amen.
