I Am Not a Happy Artist” – Seyram Music Calls Out Industry Rot in Candid Rant
Seyram Music, a gifted Ewe singer-songwriter and guitarist, has poured out his frustrations in a heartfelt social media rant that’s sparking conversations across the creative community.
Recounting his journey, Seyram shared how his artistry began in Accra, nurtured by Akan and Ga creatives. His weekly show Seyram and Friends at Zen Garden quickly gained traction, attracting a multicultural audience. “I never struggled to fill the space,” he said, highlighting the show’s influence, which once even hosted Patoranking’s album listening event.
Despite the offers—one even from Wahala Entertainment, owners of Zen Garden, who wanted to sign him just as they did Kwan Pa—Seyram chose a different path. “I wanted to return home. I wanted to sing in my own dialect, fused with English—to create something authentic and true to my roots,” he stated.
His return to the Volta Region in 2021 was marked by Ewe renditions of Shatta Wale’s I Know My Level and a parody of Wetin We Gain, which caught the attention of the Volta Music Awards. But his excitement turned to concern when he realized how disconnected Accra was from the musical pulse of the region. “Why hadn’t I heard these beautiful songs in Accra?” he asked.
The artist didn’t hold back in criticizing the local creative scene, calling out unqualified individuals in leadership and the lack of genuine support. A seemingly simple moment—inviting a market woman in Ho to a free event she never attended—crystallized his frustrations. “That moment made me miss Accra, where people, despite the traffic, would show up.”
Seyram’s message was clear: the problems stifling the industry are internal. “We are the problem… That small, dishonest gain you make today will one day catch up with you.”
In closing, he declared, “I am not a happy artist. ”
