Mavins Presents Lifesize Teddy: Debut Eponymous EP Out Now!

The Nigerian emcee Lifesize Teddy is welcomed to Mavin Records’ illustrious roster.
The moment has arrived once again as Mavin Records continues its proven tradition of signing new artists, releasing debut EPs, and witnessing their rapid rise to stardom. In their customary fashion, they unveil an exceptionally gifted artist who has been nurtured under careful guidance and is now poised for a grand debut.

Allow us to introduce you to Lifesize Teddy, a rapper originating from the vibrant city of Port Harcourt. It’s worth highlighting that she shares her hometown with some of the industry’s most esteemed and exceptionally talented artists, such as Burna Boy, Omah Lay, and Dandizzy, adding to the rich creative tapestry of the city.

Lifesize Teddy is set to make a significant impact in an industry that lacks prominent female emcees. Standing out as a breath of fresh air, she is destined to become a revolutionary force in the music scene. Her exceptional versatility sets her apart; she effortlessly transitions between roles as a rapper, singer, songwriter, and poet, adapting to various artistic forms as the situation demands.

Delving deeper into Lifesize Teddy’s background, her birth name is Banigo Apiafi Treasure. Raised in the culturally diverse Bonny Island in Port Harcourt, her upbringing was influenced by a blend of local and foreign elements, which have shaped her unique persona. Her mother played a pivotal role in inspiring her musical and poetic journey, unknowingly molding her creative essence.

During her formative years, she immersed herself in her mother’s cassette collection, absorbing the sounds of iconic artists like Asa, Rex Lawson, Brenda Fassie, and Shania Twain. These influences laid the foundation for her music, leaving discernible traces in her compositions. Her initiation into music began at the tender age of 12, sparked by the impact of Kanye West’s legendary album “College Dropout.” Her emotionally rich delivery finds expression through her pen as a poet, resulting in captivating musical experiences for her listeners.

As part of her introduction, she has unveiled an EP consisting of five masterfully crafted tracks that showcase her versatility and prowess as both a singer and rapper. After graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maritime Port Harcourt, she engaged with the university’s rap community, refining her skills and honing her craft.

Lifesize Teddy seamlessly blends contemporary relatability with the timeless essence of the artists who paved the way before her. Fearlessly weaving her emotions into her lyrics, she embodies a fusion of innate talent and honed skill. It is evident that she is a rising star destined to leave an indelible mark on the global music stage.

Top 10 Afrobeats Hits From Ghana In 2023
In 2023, Ghana sustained its influential position in the Afrobeats scene, shaping and redefining the genre for a global audience. Though it may not have been the most monumental year for Ghanaian music, the powerhouse unquestionably delivered chart-topping hits, some of which resonated worldwide. Explore our list of the top 10 Afrobeats hits from Ghana in 2023.

1. King Promise – Terminator
King Promise stepped away from his typical love-themed tracks to deliver what is undeniably the biggest Ghanaian afrobeats song of the year. Produced by Killbeatz, the infectious amapiano-infused tune has captivated afrobeats enthusiasts across the continent. Notably, it has spawned two remixes, the first featuring Nigerian record producer and artiste Young Jonn, and the second featuring international superstars Tiwa Savage and Sean Paul.

2. JZyNO ft. Lasmid – Butta My Bread
Ghana-based Liberian singer JZyNO made a breakthrough into mainstream prominence with the Lasmid-assisted “Butta My Bread”. Beyond propelling JZyNO to fame, this enchanting earworm solidifies the growing reputation of fast-rising Ghanaian star Lasmid, who consistently strikes gold with every musical project he lends his vocals to.

3. OliveTheBoy – Goodsin
OliveTheBoy, recognized as one of Ghana’s rising stars in 2023, achieved prominence with his viral hit “Goodsin” lifted off his Avana EP. Propelled by a popular TikTok challenge, The 20-year-old artiste’s single rapidly amassed ten million streams. Additionally, “Goodsin” secured the title of the most Shazamed song in both Ghana and Nigeria earlier this year, establishing OliveTheBoy’s swift ascent on the music scene.

4. Lasmid – Bad Boy
Lasmid, the breakout star of 2022 and one of Ghana’s most promising talents, known for hits such as “Friday Night,” “Atele,” and “Running,” sustains his momentum into 2023 with the hit “Bad Boy.” On this track, Lasmid embraces his newfound bad boy persona, delivering a captivating loverboy anthem.

5. Stonebwoy – Into The Future
Stonebwoy, the self-acclaimed Overlord of Ghanaian music, built on his success in 2022. After signing with Def Jam Africa and releasing several singles under the global label, he sustained his momentum with the release of his fifth studio album, “5th Dimension.” A standout track from the album, “Into The Future,” is an infectious Afro-dancehall fusion that earned widespread acclaim and had everyone on their feet dancing in 2023.

6. Mr Drew ft. Mophty Legacy – Case
Mr Drew’s “Case” featuring Mophty Legacy, stands out as one of the year’s biggest hits. Interestingly, it is a remix of the original version released earlier this year with Sista Afia and Strongman. Mr Drew initiated an open verse challenge for the original version, and Mophty Legacy, an up-and-coming artiste, contributed an exceptional verse that resonated with listeners due to its heartfelt and relatable content. Recognizing the positive reception, Mr Drew officially released a remix featuring Mophty’s verse, which exceeded expectations, becoming an even more significant hit.

7. Kuami Eugene – Monica
Kuami Eugene came through with a last-minute game winning strike with “Monica”. This infectious track is featured on his recent studio album, “Love And Chaos”, released in the last quarter of 2023. RADAR Global Artist Ayra Starr Is Ready To Bring Her Fierce Yet Soothing Brand of Afrosoul to the World

Since its launch in 2020, RADAR has served as Spotify’s program to showcase emerging artists from all around the world, supporting them and taking their talents to the global musical stage. Now RADAR Global has returned with our latest featured artist, Afrosoul sensation Ayra Starr.

Born in Benin, in West Africa, Ayra was raised between its beach city, Cotonou, and the cultural hub of Lagos, Nigeria. The self-proclaimed celestial being says it’s this mix of cultures that inspires her global approach to music, art, and life. It also helped that she grew up with a music-loving family and began cowriting music with her brother Dami at the age of 10.

Ayra announced herself to the world in 2021 with her self-titled five-track EP, Ayra Starr, which featured the breakout single “Away.” Soon after, her critically acclaimed debut studio album 19 & Dangerous was released. Its lead single, “Bloody Samaritan,” has been streamed more than 30 million times on Spotify to date.

But the success didn’t stop there. This year, the young artist has reached international audiences by collaborating with Skip Marley on his single “Jane,” as well as Manny Norté, Stalk Ashley, and Tiana Major9 on “Worth My While.”

And for all her hard work, Ayra is now enjoying the recognition that follows: She’s the second-most-nominated artist at the Headies Awards, Africa’s premier music awards, and has a 2022 BET Award nomination for Best New International Act under her belt.

For the Record sat down with Ayra to talk about music, her family, and more.

What are you looking forward to most as Spotify’s latest RADAR artist?
I am really looking forward to being discovered by new people who will find different meanings in my songs. You know, different people need different things at different times of their life, and that’s what music does—it helps fans connect on a deeper level. As an artist, it’s such a surreal feeling to know that there are people out there discovering my music and relating to my lyrics. It’s so beautiful. With RADAR, I am excited for my music to reach new audiences and to be shared on a global platform.

For new fans, how would you describe your sound?
I’d describe it as soothing but fierce yet soulful.

Who have been some of your biggest musical inspirations?
Rihanna, Lijadu Sisters, 2Baba, Nicki Minaj, and a host of others.

You have a pretty musically inclined family. How have they influenced your career?
Oh, in almost every aspect. Having a family with a musical background gave me the confidence to soar and discover my love for the art of music. They encouraged me to pursue my dreams and helped me to navigate my career early on.

Growing up between Benin and Nigeria must have brought with it some vastly different experiences from a cultural and personal standpoint. How has that played a role in your music?
There’s nothing better than having a broad perspective when making music. Coming from a family that’s deeply rooted in different cultures gave me the opportunity to view the world through more than one lens and contributed to my sound.

What message do you want listeners to take away from your music?
I think my music conveys the fact that I am not scared to spread my wings wide, and I would love for listeners to feel like that too. Bet on yourself and never back down. Keep going.

Do you have any advice for other emerging artists?
Know who you are, know your worth, and do you respectfully but unapologetically.

Check out Ayra Starr along with other emerging international talent on the RADAR Global playlist.

Spotify Invests in the Future of Ghana’s Rising Creators

SHARE
Ghanaian creators are having a moment on Spotify. For every stream in Ghana of a local artist, there are six more streams in markets around the world. Examples include singer, rapper, and Spotify RADAR artist Black Sherif, whose hip-hop and reggae blends are finding new listeners in Nigeria and the U.K.; and Atlanta-based singer-songwriter-engineeer-producer and EQUAL artist Amaarae, who has recently seen her music soar to new heights in Chile, India, and Mexico.

EQUAL artists Moliy and Gyakie and Fresh Finds artist Kofee Bean, among countless others, are seeing listeners in markets like the U.S., Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, and France. And there’s even more on the podcast side, as Sincerely Accra, a Ghanaian podcast, was named one of 13 African podcasts to receive a share of Spotify’s $100,000 African podcast investment last year.

This week, we increased our ongoing commitment to artists and creators across Africa through a donation to Vibrate Space from our Creator Equity Fund. Vibrate Space, operated by Surf Ghana in Accra, is a community recording studio and music business program that offers education and mentorship for young Ghanaian artists so they can create, connect, and collaborate. Over the past six months, Vibrate has registered more than 200 studio bookings and hosted many more creators for events and classes.

We first partnered with Vibrate in September 2022 with a donation that assisted in the launch of the studio. Now, to help Vibrate achieve its robust plans to further support the creative economy in Ghana, we’re making an additional donation from the fund.

At an event at Surf Ghana, Spotify’s Global Head of Artist and Audience Partnerships, Joe Hadley, shared the news. “Spotify is proud to continue our efforts to support and uplift creatives with our Creator Equity Fund. I’m excited to share that from that fund, we’re announcing a donation to the Vibrate Space in Accra, Ghana,” he said to a room full of African artists as well as the Vibrate team. “They have been incredible partners to us, continually pouring into the local community and creating a space where artists can come together to grow creatively. We’re looking forward to hearing the music, stories, and success that will come out of Vibrate.”

The donation will be administered over a two-year period, enabling the organization to collaborate with and support even more aspiring young artists who seek to kick-start their careers.

“We are happy to be partnered with Spotify,” said founder and director of Surf Ghana Sandy Alibo. “They’re really supportive of the alternative scene, and not every brand understands that. We work with young and emerging artists and creators who are looking to make a mark in the music industry, and Spotify is a brand that speaks to young people and has played a significant role in taking African and Ghanaian music to the world.”

Vibrate’s plans for the additional funding include a festival, a program to support artists as they put on their own events, and the establishment of a youth hostel where young people can find affordable, short-term accommodation while also experiencing the collaborative and community aspects of Vibrate.

“Since Spotify’s arrival in Africa five years ago, we have worked to identify opportunities to support artists in ways that speak directly to each of our markets, said Phiona Okumu, Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). “The partnership with Vibrate allows us to continue supporting emerging artists and cultural entrepreneurs in Ghana in addition to the on-platform work we are doing in the country.”

Vibrate is also looking to establish an artist-in-residency and exchange program to fuel creativity, collaboration, and cultural exchange, as well as a women’s program aimed at supporting women’s growth in the industry. The studio also intends to expand their educational offerings by extending their highly successful monthly masterclasses for another two years and introducing a three-month instrument learning program, starting with piano.

“Spotify is constantly seeking new and innovative ways to promote African music and celebrate and support its creators,” said Managing Director for Spotify SSA Jocelyne Muhutu–Remy. “We see ourselves as a global platform with a local focus, and we really drill down to understand what is happening across the continent and how we can support both artists and users in those markets. Our partnership with Vibrate is one way that we are doing this in Ghana, but we have plans and projects in place to support artists both on and off platform across the region.”

After announcing the donation, Joe and Phiona facilitated an artist discussion with Black Sherif, Baaba J, M3NSA, Moses Sumney, Ria Boss, TMSKDJ, Joey B, Poetra Asantewa, Amaarae, and more on Spotify’s efforts in the region, the benefits of streaming, and the importance of artist-fan connections.

With over 13 billion streams on Spotify in 2022, Afrobeats remains one of the globe’s hottest sounds. While countries like the U.S., U.K., and Nigeria remain the biggest consumers of Afrobeats, the genre’s popularity has grown rapidly in countries like France, the Netherlands, and Mexico as fans can’t get enough of artists like Rema, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy.

That’s why we’re launching Afrobeats: Journey of a Billion Streams, a dedicated website that will act as a repository of the latest news and developments in Afrobeats.

Whether looking at the genre’s origins in Ghana, its rise and evolution in Nigeria, or its fusion with other genres, we’re spotlighting how Afrobeats became one of Africa’s biggest cultural exports and are tracking its underreported narratives.

Afrobeats: Journey of a Billion Streams will consist of five key pillars:

Origins explores the genres that acted as precursors of Afrobeats as we know it.
Evolution dives deeper into which industry players contributed to the current Afrobeats sound that the whole world can’t seem to get enough of.
Fusion looks at how Afrobeats has emerged by melding itself with other genres, such as reggaeton, amapiano, and other hybrids.
Cultural exportation documents the influence of Afrobeats in music, food, language, and fashion lenses, especially in countries outside Africa.
The Women of Afrobeats sheds light on some of the key women in the industry whose contributions propelled the genre to its current status as a global sensation.
The site features regular interviews with leading experts, videos, quizzes, and the latest Spotify data and trends around Afrobeats listening.

“There is no doubt that Afrobeats as a genre is here to stay and will only continue to shatter more ceilings,” says Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Managing Director for Spotify in sub-Saharan Africa. “In 2023 alone, the genre has been played for more than 223 million hours, with streams exceeding 7.1 billion on Spotify. We created this site for both new and longtime fans of the genre who want to better understand how and where this explosive sound came to be.”

Over the next eight weeks, the site will be updated regularly and will continue to remain active with the latest happenings from the global Afrobeats community.
