From BBC to Netflix the world is paying attention to Elmina. A three part documentary series featuring the works of Buy Food with Plastic Ghana and in Nicaragua and India coming soon on Netflix. We are proud to see the youth of Elmina actively engaged in productive work to bring positive change to the community. Big up to George Kwame Quansah country manager of Buy Food With Plastic Ghana for their effort in curbing the menace of plastic waste pollution within KEEA. It would be great to see the Municipal Assembly and the various traditional councils with KEEA actively partner with them to help protect out society and the health of the people.

In our latest documentary, Bor Na Nya: The Beginning of a Ghanaian Christmas, we dive into the 17th-century Fante coast. From when Dutch ships anchored offshore to the daring swimmers who braved the waves for "swim and get" (Bor na nya), this is how a colonial contest gave us the name for our favorite season Bronya.

Watch the full story of how history, language, and the ocean shaped the way we celebrate today.

This test video explores how a 15th-century Elmina (Anomansa) warrior may have looked, drawing from early European encounter records, such as Portuguese and English accounts from the late 1400s and local oral traditions passed down through generations.

As part of the Brand Elmina Heritage Films project, this work seeks to visualise early Anomansa history by translating written and oral accounts into cinematic imagery. Using a range of generative AI platforms, we are experimenting with different visual styles to reimagine our past in ways that are relatable, educational, and engaging for today’s audience.

This initiative supports the memorialisation of Elmina’s history and culture, helping communities especially younger generations connect more easily with their heritage. The project is currently in the late research and pre-production stage.

Hosting Miles Greenwood (Museum of Liverpool) and Dr Monicah Sairo (Museum of Kenya), fellows of MuseumLabs 2025, on our Elmina Heritage Tour was an insightful experience.

Beyond the Castle, the walk through town revealed Elmina’s fishing traditions, cultural continuity, and its balance between holding onto the past and embracing modern life. Our conversations centred on the need for inclusive interpretation of a painful history.

A reminder that memory and community heritage still shape identities and spaces today. 📸 Ghana Museums and Monuments Board

I received a call from my good friend Henry Amartey to meet him at the education directorate of KEEA, little did I know it was a friendly ambush. I got there only to be ushered into the office of the Director of Education for KEEA madam Mercy Akua Lissar and be presented with this beautiful citation. Honestly it never crossed my mind for a split second. But I truly appreciate this, I jokingly told him he is playing home and is at a numerical advantage, had I known I would have also come with the compliment of my team. The citation was in appreciation for the social interventions carried out in the Agona Abrem Circuit of KEEA by our organisation Michael Kunke Foundation. I don’t do this alone, there is a team I work with and I received this citation on behalf of the team at Michael Kunke Foundation and also to our partners without whom this would not be possible Lemon Beach Resort Freelancenana Travels Felicia Brown-Smith RazorSocial Armen D Ross Embassy of the Czech Republic in Accra Nana Preston Sophia Pryce Samuel Nyarkoh I say a big thank you and to everyone who has contributed in one way or the other. The Second Battle of Elmina raged for six days as Dutch forces laid siege to Portuguese Elmina. After fierce cannon fire from St. Jago Hill, the Portuguese surrendered—ushering in 235 years of Dutch rule.
But this victory didn’t come easy. Earlier Dutch attempts in 1596 and the First Battle of Elmina in 1625 both failed. The Dutch only learned of Elmina’s gold years before through Barent Eriksz, a sailor once captured by the Portuguese on São Tomé.
Today, Dutch surnames, architecture, and cultural traces remain part of Elmina’s living history.
