Sony and Honda have officially cancelled the AFEELA 1 electric vehicle project, marking the end of their high-profile joint venture under Sony Honda Mobility. The AFEELA 1, first showcased as a futuristic electric sedan with advanced infotainment, gaming integration, and autonomous features, was originally scheduled to launch in the United States in 2026. However, the companies have now decided to halt development and cancel the planned launch, with refunds being issued to customers who had already placed reservations.

The decision comes as Honda scales back its broader EV strategy following major financial losses and slowing global demand for electric vehicles. Without Honda’s continued support and key technologies, the project was no longer viable, leading to its cancellation. Industry challenges such as reduced government incentives, rising competition from more affordable EV makers, and weaker consumer demand also played a role. The move highlights the growing uncertainty in the EV market, even for ambitious collaborations that aimed to combine automotive engineering with cutting-edge technology.

New data from the Vehicle Dependability Study shows premium and mass-market leaders—while software headaches remain a thorn for many owners.

A year after Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi stunned the industry with a pre-Valentine’s breakup of their megamerger, the three are still talking about partnerships.

They haven’t found much common ground.

At earnings announcements this month, executives said the Japanese automakers are exploring tie-ups in several areas, including the joint supply of products for the North American market, electrified drivetrain technology and the development of automotive software systems.

Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa sounded optimistic, calling discussions “constructive and positive.”

But concrete projects remain mostly elusive, two years after the carmakers floated a framework for cooperation and a year after their planned merger blew up in acrimony.

European automakers are reworking interior designs after EuroNCAP updated its assessment protocols in January to discourage touchscreen-only controls for essential driving tasks.

The move extends a safety debate that intensified as touchscreen-dependent dashboards became standard across the industry.

Starting this year, physical controls will be required for turn signals, wipers, hazard lights, horn and SOS calls to earn five stars from EuroNCAP, which evaluates the safety of new vehicles through standardized crash tests and safety feature assessments.

Automakers covet the organization’s top score of five stars and often highlight their positive test results in their sales and marketing campaigns.

Automakers that stick solely to touchscreens for these functions will have points deduced from their EuroNCAP safety evaluation. Euro NCAP is a voluntary safety rating program so its requirements are not mandated by European law.

In China, similar requirements could become law. Bloomberg reported Feb. 13 that proposed regulations from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology say that turn signals, hazard lights, gear selection and emergency calling must have fixed buttons or switches with a minimum surface size of 10 mm by 10 mm (0.4 inches by 0.4 inches).
