Dawit Isaak, is one of the longest detained journalists in the world.
The Swedish-Eritrean writer and journalist has been imprisoned for almost 17 years without sentence with many more journalists being detained for ostensibly demanding democratic reforms in a series of letters to President Isayas Afeworki.

Egyptian photo journalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid known as Shawkan has been selected by an independent international jury of the media profeesionals as the laureate of the 2018 prize

Shawkan has been in prison since August 14,2013 where he was reportedly facing death penalty.He was arrested while covering violent clashes between supporters of ousted President Morsi and security forces in Rabaa Al-Adawiya Square in Cairo, which left hundreds of Islamist protesters dead.
