I look at what's happening in the corporate world, and I can't help but marvel and reflect.

I marvel at how often parents complain when children are given homework that requires research.

I marvel at our curriculum and wonder why there's no focus on integrating artificial intelligence into the learning process.

This is why we still have a long way to go, both as a country and as a continent.

Companies in the West and East are fiercely competing to lead, and guess what we’re still focusing on?

We're training children to watch more reality shows than to engage in research.

We're training children to waste time playing instead of embracing a culture of reading.

We're training children to crave instant gratification instead of teaching them the value of delayed gratification.

We all agree that these children are the future leaders of this world, but are we really helping them develop habits that will become an integral part of their identity?

We were once told we were the future leaders too. So, what happened? The way we were raised and trained played a big role.

It's time to do better.

For months, I let this one thought keep me stuck: “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄’𝙢 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩?”⁣

⁣
Sound familiar? That’s imposter syndrome, and trust me, it’s the deadly poison hindering your growth.⁣

I’d stare at my drafts for hours, second-guessing every word. The fear of judgment kept me from sharing my ideas, my knowledge, my voice.⁣

Until one day, I asked myself, “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣?”⁣

I had a friend back in school who loved praying at midnight, from 11 PM to 2 AM.

For me, I preferred praying before going to bed because, once I got under the covers, waking up for prayer became a struggle.

One day, my friend received a revelation that required deep and intense prayer. We looked at our schedules and realized that the only time we had to pray together was between 11 PM and 2 AM.

So, we decided to commit to praying every night for 21 days during that time at the prayer garden on campus.

If we missed a day, we made up for it by praying an extra four hours the next day.

There were moments when we ended up praying for a straight 8 hours, because fatigue was setting in and sleep was constantly trying to take over. But we had a goal: we were determined to pray for the full time, no matter what.

By God's grace, we completed the 21 days of prayer. After that, we returned to our normal routines.

Then, one day, my friend asked, "When was the last time you prayed at midnight?" I told him, "Since we last prayed together." He laughed and said, "Well, I didn’t expect it to be permanent. It was only temporary."

At first, I didn’t understand why he said that. But everything made sense when I came across this powerful statement in Atomic Habits: Improvements are temporary until they become a part of who you are.

That’s when I realized why praying at midnight didn’t become a habit for me. It wasn’t part of my identity.

The belief that I wasn't a "morning person" was so deeply ingrained in me that, without even realizing it, I kept manifesting it in everything I did. It was just part of who I was.

So, what does this mean for you?

Many of you have goals, like writing every day on social media. But if writing isn't part of your identity, you won’t write consistently.

If it was part of who you are, you’d write every day, regardless of whether you post it or not.

If reading was part of your identity, you’d be an avid reader, unable to go a day without learning something new.

If teaching was part of your identity, you’d never get tired of teaching.

So, here’s what you should aim for:

In everything you do, aim to be.

When setting goals, aim for identity-based outcomes.

In your pursuit of growth, aim to unlearn the old beliefs and habits that are keeping you stuck.

That’s how true growth happens.

The owl glides through the air, wings stretched wide, gaze fixed ahead. It doesn’t pause to apologize for taking up space in the sky. It doesn’t wonder if it’s flying “right” or if someone else could do it better. It simply flies; because that’s what it was made to do.

But you? You hesitate. You overthink. You let imposter syndrome shrink your wings, convincing you that your work isn’t good enough or that someone else’s “flight” more valid than your own.

See, no one else can fly like you. No one else carries the unique patterns of creativity that you do. Your ideas, your voice, your perspective; they’re yours, and the world needs them.

Like the owl, you don’t need permission to soar. Stop waiting for the “perfect moment” or the “perfect version” of yourself. The moment is now. The version is you, exactly as you are.

So spread your wings. Take up space. Create without apology. The skies aren’t judging; they’re waiting for you to take flight.

I passed through a compound house some days ago and saw something that is a common phenomenon in many African homes. I overheard a mother or guardian talking harshly to a boy of no more than 10 years old. What caught my attention were the words she used. ⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
She said, “𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. 𝗪𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭?” She said this in Ewe, one of our local dialects. Such heavy words!⁣

I do not know what the boy did to warrant such words, but one thing I know for sure is that those words will gradually erode the boy's confidence.⁣

⁣
⁣
This boy will grow up with the mentality that he makes the lives of those close to him difficult, so you'll see him lose interest in friendships and become more reserved.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
You see, some people were not born introverted. They were extroverts, but the words of others and circumstances suddenly made them quiet and reserved. This is why we must think twice before opening our mouths to speak.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
This boy will do everything in his power to hide his capabilities. He might have a great gift for writing, singing, painting, or any incredible talent that could amaze the world, but because of his mother’s words, he will bury that potential. He doesn't want another person to confirm what his mother has said about him being useless and unable to do anything right.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
The words we speak carry so much power that they have the ability to mar or make someone’s future. No wonder the Bible explicitly states that “𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐥𝐢𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞.” ⁣

If you want to breathe life into someone, your words need to be well thought out. If you want to break someone’s inner strength, speak without thinking, speak when you’re angry, and you'll make the best statement you'll ever regret.⁣

For as long as I can remember, I have been my mother’s trusted ally in her business, the Amenuveve Boutique.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
Let me take you down memory lane.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
I am the third child of my parents. My eldest sibling helped my mother before I was born. Even in my childhood, I saw her assisting before going to boarding school and later working in a company in Tema. Tragically, she had an accident on her way to work one early morning, which led to her death two weeks later.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
My second sister also helped along the way, but school prevented her from continuing. So, I stepped in. I have practically watched my mother hawking various items just to take care of us, from selling spaghetti and Chinese plates to jewellery, and later, clothes and dresses. I often accompanied her on her hawking sprees. Among all my siblings, I have been with her the most. Sometimes, I would go hawking with her after school, on weekends, and during holidays.⁣

⁣
I was so excited when she finally got a shop and began her boutique. I would gladly open the shop every day. Sometimes, I would open it before going to school, waking up as early as 4 a.m. I stayed in the shop when she was not around and sold to people when she travelled. Being in the shop was something I loved doing. Though sometimes, I wanted to have free time like my sisters and not be in the shop, other times, I just loved being there. Of all my siblings, I was the only one who went to a day school, so you can imagine.⁣

⁣
⁣
I think this is where I fell in love with business and handling daily money and alerts. I even suggested to my mum to bring her business online, but she refused. I didn't push the idea further.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
When I went to school far from home and faced financial difficulties, I started my first business, a retail egg outlet, less than four months into school. It was going well until I decided to expand, which led to me being scammed of almost GH¢ 500. I cried and decided not to do business again. However, less than three months later, I started again. I guess I just love doing business. This time, it was eggs and bread. The eggs sold well, but the bread didn't. In fact, I gave the rest of the bread to some of my mates. I paused the business.⁣

⁣
⁣
Later, I learnt how to grill sausage, pork, and gizzard kebab. I began a business around it. It flourished, but I couldn't continue due to a lack of time. Then I ventured into the AI picture business last year.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
All these experiences, despite my dislike for mathematics, made me love business even more. Anytime I open my mother’s shop lately, I pray for God to help me open mine or expand hers into a huge family business. I don't know the plans or steps to take, but just as most Nigerian successful businesses like Olam, I know it is possible.⁣
⁣
⁣
⁣
I dream of owning multiple businesses in diverse fields someday. I don't have a strategy laid out now, but I know it is possible, and it will become a reality soon. I am putting this here so that Facebook will remind me year in and year out until it becomes a reality. I'm not sleeping on this at all.⁣

When I was young, I thought life was easy for adults. ⁣
Now as an adult, I think being a child was a safer space. ⁣

I can't help but agree with the inspiration behind the “𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐧𝐚 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐦” hit song! ⁣

Sadly, I've deleted the contacts of four people who died this year alone from my list. One of them penned down a note and then took his life. ⁣

Life is pushing everyone to the edge and making sure only the fittest get to see the light of a new dawn. ⁣
It appears we all have to learn on the job now, living and learning how to live. ⁣
⁣

Feeling like a failure?

Do you think your content isn’t good enough due to low engagement?

Wait!

Before you quit, do these things:

⬅️ Go through the timeline of three of your favourite content creators/influencers.

⬅️ Read their content from as far back as when they started their journey.

⬅️ Now, go through your own timeline and read all the content you see there.

⬅️ Go through your Google docs and read all your unpublished works.

When you do the first two, you’ll realise that when your favourite influencers started, there were times they had low and even no engagement on their content.

Despite the “engagement barrier”, you’ll see they kept showing up and providing value.

They consistently shared their knowledge and as a result, their visibility and engagement grew.

You are at the stage they used to be. Learn from that and don't give up.

When you do the last two, you’ll realise how much treasure you have for the world and the knowledge you have that many others don't. Let that be your motivation.

Keep showing up, fellow creator.
In the end, you'll be glad you did.

⬅️ If they are on social media, engage intelligently with their content, repost them, and talk about him to your squad so they become familiar with them.⁣⁣

⬅️ If they offer paid trainings, courses, or books, purchase them and apply their teachings to your life.⁣⁣

⬅️ Attend physical events where you can meet them. Strategically position yourselft be noticed.⁣⁣

These are just a few ways to capture the attention of a potential mentor or coach. Directly messaging someone to mentor you is old-fashioned.⁣⁣
