AG Withdraws Charges Against 2nd And 3rd Accused In Abu Trica Case

The Attorney-General has withdrawn charges against Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, the second and third accused persons in the ongoing extradition proceedings involving Frederick Kumi, also known as Emmanuel Kojo Baah or Abu Trica.

A notice of withdrawal from prosecution, dated January 14, 2026, and issued from the Office of the Attorney-General in Accra, said the decision was taken pursuant to Section 59 of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30).

The notice stated that Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo had been withdrawn from prosecution in respect of all charges brought against them in the case.

The matter arises from extradition proceedings linked to the 1931 Extradition Treaty between the United Kingdom and the United States of America, as applied between Ghana and the United States.

The notice, signed by the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, was addressed to the Registrar of the Gbese District Court in the Greater Accra Region.

Frederick Kumi, (Abu Trica) the first accused person in the case, remains before the court in relation to the extradition proceedings.

He was arraigned before the court under Ghana’s Extradition Act, 1960 (Act 22), to determine whether he should be surrendered to stand trial in the United States.

The ruling date was announced after the Republic withdrew charges against the second and third accused persons, Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, who were initially presented as accessories to Kumi in a charge sheet filed on December 12, 2025.

US pauses Immigrant Visa processing for Nigeria, Ghana, and 73 other countries

The United States has announced a temporary halt to immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, as it reviews visa screening procedures under its long-standing “public charge” rules.Ghana travel guide

According to the U.S. State Department, the pause takes effect January 21 and will remain in place indefinitely while consular officers reassess how visa applicants are evaluated to determine whether they may become overly dependent on U.S. public welfare systems.

Countries affected by the decision include Ghana, Nigeria, Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Thailand, and Yemen, among others across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean.

The “public charge” provision allows U.S. authorities to deny immigrant visas based on factors such as an applicant’s age, health status, financial capacity, English proficiency, family support systems, and likelihood of needing long-term care or public assistance.

A spokesperson for the State Department, Tommy Piggott, said the move is intended to protect U.S. public resources.

“The State Department will use its long-standing authority to deem ineligible potential immigrants who would become a public charge on the United States and exploit the generosity of the American people,” Piggott told Fox News.

US has assured Ghana it’ll not block extradition of Ofori‑Atta and Tamakloe – Ablakwa

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said the United States government has assured Ghana that it will not stand in the way of the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori‑Atta and former MASLOC boss Sedina Tamakloe Attionu as part of ongoing bilateral cooperation.

Ofori‑Atta was detained in the United States in January 2026, amid Ghana’s formal extradition request relating to corruption and procurement charges filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

He remains in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody while legal proceedings assessing his immigration status and extradition request continue.

Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, who was convicted of causing financial loss to the state and sentenced in Ghana in 2024, has also been a subject of ongoing extradition efforts.

The Attorney General said the formal request sent to the US Department of Justice in mid‑2024 remains under review, with authorities awaiting procedural completion.

During the bilateral meeting in Accra with the acting US Ambassador to Ghana, Rolf Olson and his team, Mr Ablakwa said the United States Government had made clear that its cooperation on these matters would not prejudice judicial processes or block Ghana’s efforts.

Daddy Lumba estate battle deepens as Akosua Serwaah heads to Court of Appeal

Akosua Serwaah has filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Kumasi against a High Court decision that recognised both her and Priscilla Ofori, also known as Odo Broni, as the lawful surviving spouses of the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

In a notice of appeal, Ms Serwaah is challenging the entire judgment of the Kumasi High Court, contending that the trial court erred in rejecting and declaring inadmissible a marriage certificate she tendered in support of her claim.

She further argues that the High Court committed an error of law when it held that she had failed to satisfy the requirements of the Evidence Act, 1975 (NRCD 323) for the admission of the marriage certificate into evidence.

The appellant is therefore asking the Court of Appeal to set aside the High Court’s judgment and to declare her as the sole lawful surviving spouse of the late musician.

On November 28, 2025, the Kumasi High Court, presided over by Justice Dr Dorinda Smith Arthur, dismissed Ms Serwaah’s suit, in which she sought a declaration that she was the only surviving spouse of Daddy Lumba.

The court held that the plaintiff failed to establish that she was married to the deceased under the Marriage Ordinance in a manner that would make her the sole surviving spouse.

According to the court, the evidence on record showed that Daddy Lumba married Akosua Serwaah under customary law, which is potentially polygamous. As a result, the court found that his subsequent marriage to Odo Broni was also valid under Ghanaian law.

In conclusion, the High Court declared both Akosua Serwaah and Priscilla Ofori, alias Odo Broni, as the legally recognised surviving spouses of the late music icon.

Miracles: Ghana experiencing a ‘reverse,’ not a reset

Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, says the cost of living for Ghanaians has worsened after one year of the NDC government, describing the current economic situation as a “reverse” rather than a reset.

Speaking at a forum assessing the government’s first year in office, dubbed the People’s Forum, Mr. Aboagye argued that although inflation has declined and the cedi has appreciated against the US dollar, household expenditure continues to rise faster than incomes.

According to him, the prices of essential goods and services have increased, placing further strain on households across the country.

“If this is a reset, then we are in trouble,” he said. “The views from the People’s Forum show that we are not experiencing a reset but a reverse, and the people are upset.”

Mr. Aboagye maintained that there is a disconnect between the economic indicators government is highlighting and the realities faced by ordinary Ghanaians.

“They are upset because inflation and the dollar are dropping, yet the cost of living keeps rising. There is a disconnect between the policies the government is touting and the evidence we experience,” he noted.

He cited rising utility tariffs and education-related expenses as examples of how reduced inflation figures are not translating into relief for workers.

“If I am a teacher coming from Dodowa and you give me a 9% increase, but today I am spending more on electricity, water, school fees and hostel fees, then it becomes a problem,” he said.

Mr. Aboagye further questioned the relevance of inflation figures in the face of sharp increases in utility costs. “When electricity tariffs go up by 28%, it makes nonsense of inflation coming down from 23% to 15%,” he stated.

He urged government to listen to feedback from ordinary citizens, particularly market women and commercial drivers, stressing that economic indicators must reflect lived realities.

Ayine: US revoked Ken Ofori-Atta’s visa

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta did not merely overstay his visa in the United States, but that it was formally revoked.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, January 10, Dr Ayine said US authorities had initially given Ofori-Atta until November 29, 2024, to leave the country, but he failed to comply. He stressed that the revocation was deliberate, connected to ongoing investigations, and not a routine immigration matter.

“This is not exactly about immigration. His visa is not expired. It expires in February. No, it was revoked. I am telling you this on authority,” Dr Ayine said.

He explained that US authorities initially planned to arrest Ofori-Atta on January 4, 2026, but the arrest did not materialise. He was eventually apprehended on January 6 in the Virginia area and taken into custody.

According to Dr Ayine, the extradition request submitted to the US is linked to investigations into the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s SML matter.

“I have been working with the Americans diligently on him. And the visa was revoked. And that is how come that he lost his immigration status in the United States,” he said.

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has disclosed that, detained former finance minister, Ken Ofori Atta has two other foreign visa which are still valid.
He has a Canada Visa which will expire in April 2031 and a UK visa which will expire in May 2032.

Ken who is currently detained by ICE in the US and given that he has deep pockets and the best of lawyers at his side, even if the US do not renew his visa, he can get a pathway that allows him to leave the US on his own to a third country instead of being deported.

Given that, there are some cr!minal charges levelled against him and efforts being made to extradite him to Ghana and his recent visa in the US nearing it’s expiration, it would be interesting to see what becomes.

Frank Davies: We’re working to resolve Ofori-Atta’s US detention

Frank Davies, lawyer for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has stated that his legal team in the United States is working to have his immigration case resolved swiftly, with a decision expected in the coming days.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News Frank Davies noted that Ofori-Atta had filed a petition for an extension of his U.S. immigration status.

Despite this, he was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Facility.

“The little I know from our counterpart lawyers in the U.S., limited as it is, is that he’s put in a petition for an extension of his immigration status, and contingent upon that, ICE, for whatever reason picked him up,” Mr. Davies explained.

He added that the reason for the detention remains unclear. “I cannot explain why they have decided to pick him up and detain him.” Davies, however, assured that the legal team is working around the clock to resolve the issue.

“They are working to have this matter determined expeditiously. In the fullness of time, maybe in the next day or two, we will all get to know what decision has been taken,” he said.

Minority: Ghanaians living in fear under Mahama

The Minority in Parliament has expressed concern over the decline in national security during President Mahama’s administration, warning that rising crime has left citizens living in fear.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, January 8, during an assessment of the President’s first year in office, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei attributed the situation to what she described as the politicisation of the police service and the neglect of the broader security sector.

According to Appiagyei, armed robbery and violent crime have surged over the past year, eroding public confidence and undermining the sense of safety Ghanaians once enjoyed.

“Ghanaians now sleep with one eye open. The security situation has deteriorated, turning our once peaceful nation into one gripped by fear and uncertainty,” she said.

Appiagyei further argued that, one year into President Mahama’s renewed mandate, the country is grappling with deepening security challenges, citing figures acknowledged by the Minister for the Interior.

“As of July 2025, Ghana had recorded about 628 armed robbery cases and 314 murders involving illicit arms in just half a year. Ghanaians no longer feel safe in their own homes. The duty to safeguard life and property has weakened under politicised policing and neglect of our security services,” she added.

U.S. Immigration authorities detain Ken Ofori-Atta over visa status

Ghana’s former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The detention has been attributed to immigration status issues, with his lawyers assuring the public that efforts are underway to secure his release.

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, Ghana-based law firm Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline and Partners (MPOBB) explained that the action by ICE was linked to questions surrounding Mr Ofori-Atta’s continued stay in the United States, rather than any criminal wrongdoing.

According to the statement, Mr Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, a legal process under U.S. immigration law that allows an individual to remain in the country beyond the validity of their original visa while their application is being considered.

The law firm disclosed that Mr Ofori-Atta’s U.S. legal team is in active engagement with ICE and is confident the matter will be resolved promptly.

The lawyers further stressed that the former finance minister is cooperating fully with U.S. immigration authorities and remains a law-abiding individual. They urged the public to remain calm, noting that the situation is procedural in nature and expected to be settled expeditiously through legal channels.
