Interpol: 68 Ghanaians among 260 arrested across Africa for online scams

Interpol has arrested 260 people across 14 African countries in a coordinated crackdown on online romance and extortion scams that defrauded more than 1,400 victims of nearly $2.8 million.

According to a report by DW Africa, the large-scale operation highlights the growing threat of digital fraud targeting vulnerable individuals worldwide.

Ghanaian authorities arrested 68 individuals, seized 835 devices, and identified 108 victims. Their investigations revealed USD 450,000 in financial losses, with USD 70,000 recovered. For romance scams, the suspects had used fake profiles, forged identities, and stolen images to deceive victims.

The scammers extracted payments using a range of schemes, including fake courier and customs shipment fees. In sextortion cases, offenders secretly recorded intimate videos during explicit chats and used them for blackmail.

The agency has pledged to intensify international cooperation and intelligence sharing to dismantle criminal networks behind these scams.

Lead, mercury found in turmeric, cereal mixes, and others – FDA report

A National Summary Report on Heavy Metal Contaminant Assessment conducted by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has revealed high levels of heavy metals in some selected food and cosmetic products on the Ghanaian market.

The surveillance, carried out across all 16 administrative regions, assessed levels of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Mercury (Hg) in turmeric, cereal mixes (tom brown), bentonite clay (“Ayilor”), kohl (“Kaji Kaji”), and some skin-lightening creams and lotions.

The findings revealed that kohl recorded 77.79 percent contamination rate for lead, with the Upper East and Eastern regions recording a 100 percent contamination rate.

Turmeric recorded a 42.09 percent contamination rate for lead, with the Greater Accra and Central regions recording the highest levels of contamination.

Cereal mixes, popularly called tom brown, recorded a 29 percent contamination rate for cadmium, with the Northeast, Western North, and Oti regions being the most affected. The report also revealed that bentonite clay (“Ayilor”) recorded a 24.62 percent contamination rate for lead, notably in the Northeastand Greater Accra regions.

He added that safety checks for cereal mixes were being expanded, and recalls of contaminated brands nationwide had been initiated for affected turmeric products, alongside the rollout of stricter inspection of imports.

By God’s grace Mahama has now admitted Covid-19 impacted our economy – Bawumia

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that President Mahama's admission that the Covid-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the economy of Ghana is "by the grace of God."

The issue of whether the deadly global pandemic which hit the world between 2020 and 2022 became topical in Ghana’s 2024 election campaign, with contrasting positions by the two main political parties.

While the then ruling NPP insisted the pandemic set the economy back with uncertain markets and revenue cuts, leading to soaring cost of living, the opposition NDC, led by President Mahama rejected the then government's claim that, maintaining that Covid-19 did not have any negative impact on Ghana's economy.

However, in New York, at a side event of the 80th UN General Assembly, President Mahama conceded that Covid-19 indeed has had a devastating impact on Ghana's economy.

"The Covid-19 pandemic erased two decades of poverty reduction in less than two years," President Mahama said at the event.

"The President knew the truth but he didn't say it during the campaign. But by the grace of God he has now said the truth. And by God's grace, we will all see the truth."

Galamsey Endangering Power Transmission Lines – GRIDCo

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has warned that illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, poses a grave threat to the country’s power transmission system.

Frank Otchere, Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Engineering and Operations, described the situation as a “near disaster” during a visit by Parliament’s Energy Committee on Thursday, September 25.

He explained that galamsey operators are now targeting land cleared for power line maintenance — known as right-of-way zones — and working dangerously close to high-voltage transmission towers.

“Now the right-of-way clearing becomes lucrative to galamseyers. In a number of areas, people go and see that overnight people come and do their galamseying activities and it is very close to our towers,” Otchere said.

He stressed that although the towers appear to be simple steel structures, their foundations are designed for specific ground conditions. Mining activity around them compromises their stability and endangers the entire power line.

“There are some towers that we have had to rush in to do some intermediary reinforcements,” he noted.
Otchere further revealed that GRIDCo workers face real danger during maintenance operations, with some staff coming under attack from armed men.

“There are some areas that even when our maintenance teams are going, they get shot at and some of them have had to run away,” he said.

Warning that the situation is escalating beyond GRIDCo’s control, he appealed for urgent support from state security agencies.
“We are getting to a point where GRIDCo alone cannot manage. We need support from all the forces to be able to do that,” he said.

Be responsible on social media – Cyber Security Authority warns SHS graduates

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has expressed concern over the rising trend of inappropriate and irresponsible statements being shared on social media by some recent high school graduates.

The Authority said it has observed posts containing indecent language and troubling intentions, including threats such as “we go scatter them” and declarations about “snatching people’s husbands.” These remarks, it noted, have been widely circulated and are attracting public attention.

The CSA reminded young people, particularly fresh graduates, that while social media offers a powerful platform for expression and networking, it also comes with responsibilities and long-term consequences.

It warned that what individuals post online becomes part of their permanent digital footprint, which universities, scholarship boards, and employers frequently review during evaluation processes. “Irresponsible content can severely damage one’s academic, career, and professional prospects,” the statement read.

The Authority further cautioned that beyond reputational harm, irresponsible online behaviour can expose young people to cyberbullying, harassment, grooming, and other forms of exploitation. In serious cases, it may also breach Ghana’s cybercrime laws under the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), and the Electronic Communications Act.

All the water bodies and forest reserves are going to be security zones – Lands Minister declares

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah has said that the next step in the fight against illegal mining is to declare all forest reserves and water bodies as security zones.

This measure is the latest in the government’s quest to curb the galamsey menace, following heightened calls by stakeholders for a declaration of state of emergency.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based GTV on September 24, Mr Kofi Buah said “…we are undertaking policy reforms, stakeholder engagement, one is to strengthen enforcement. These things that I am talking about…Why did we establish the Blue Water Guard?, ” he quizzed.

The Lands Minister added, “…And now, in the last week or so the President has made it clear that we are going a step that says that all the water bodies and forest reserves are going to be security zones…and we are preparing to deploy permanent security forces to these areas.”

He noted that the level of destruction caused by galamsey to the environment requires more time to resolve.

“With the level of destruction that this government came to meet, we are under no illusion that it is going to be solved in 8 months. But we are proud of what we are doing. This is a listening government, and we are going to do more,” he assured.

Despite the measures outlined by the government to fight the galamsey menace, many stakeholders have expressed dissatisfaction owing to the severity of the effects on the environment and humans.

The calls heightened after findings by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) indicated that mercury contamination in some water bodies is as high as 500 times.

Suhum: GNFS Retrieves Lifeless Baby From Toilet Pit

Firefighters in Ali, a suburb of Suhum, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, recovered the lifeless body of a one-week-old baby boy from a toilet pit.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Eastern Region, the rescue team was called to the scene near Gateway Preparatory School early Tuesday morning, September 23, 2025.

The distress call came in at around 6:30 a.m. An 11-member team, led by ASTNO Danso Henry from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station, arrived at 6:44 a.m. and began a rescue operation. By 7:00 a.m., they had removed the baby from the pit, but he was already lifeless.

Initial reports suggest that the baby may have been dumped by his mother, who fled the scene. The body was handed over to the police for further investigation. The Fire Service praised the rescue team for their effort under such difficult circumstances.

“We commend the brave Suhum Fire Rescuers for their prompt response, professionalism, and dedication in handling this heartbreaking incident,” the statement read. Meanwhile, Police are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with useful information to come forward.

10 arrested, three killed as Police break up Rural Bank robbery syndicate

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate that has been targeting rural banks across several regions in the country.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, made the announcement at a press conference held at the National Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, September 24, 2024.

Addressing members of the press, police officers, and other dignitaries, the IGP described the successful operation as a “major breakthrough” in the Service’s ongoing crackdown on organised armed robbery groups.

According to IGP Yohuno, the Police Service began observing a disturbing pattern of attacks on financial institutions—particularly rural banks—over the past year. The similarities in the ex*****on of these robberies pointed to a coordinated and well-structured gang.

“This morning, we are delighted to share with you a major breakthrough the Service has made in our fight against violent crimes, specifically armed robbery,” the IGP stated. “After analysing data and conducting surveillance in collaboration with credible informants, we were able to track down the syndicate.”

“We will not stop until we get them arrested,” the IGP assured.
During the operation, the police recovered a cache of weapons and other items, including:

* 14 weapons (AK-47 rifles, pump action guns, pistols, and a single-barreled gun)
* Ammunition
* Vehicles
* Mobile phones

“We will continue to make life uncomfortable for criminal elements in our society. We will continue to pursue you till you are brought to justice,” he warned.

PURC increases electricity tariffs by 1.14%, maintains water tariffs for Q4

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 1.14% upward adjustment in electricity tariffs for the fourth quarter of 2025, effective October 1, 2025.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the Commission said water tariffs will remain unchanged during the period.

The adjustments, according to the PURC, were made under its Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, which ensures tariffs reflect changes in key economic indicators beyond the control of utility service providers.

“These adjustments are undertaken quarterly to maintain the real value of the tariffs and to keep the utility service providers financially viable to enable them to deliver on their services to consumers,” the statement read.

Galamsey: Water shortage triggers diarrhoea outbreak in Gomoa East

A coastal community in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region has recorded 20 diarrhoea cases, following a worsening water shortage triggered by the shutdown of Ghana Water Limited’s Headworks at Kwanyako.

Health officials at the Gomoa Fetteh CHPs compound say the lack of water has made it increasingly difficult to maintain hygiene and sanitation at the facility.

Senior midwife, Belinda Serwaa Sarfo, confirmed to Citi News that “20 people reported to the facility with diarrhoea cases [on Sunday],” adding that cases of enteric and typhoid fever are also being reported.

The health centre has been without water for over a week, with tanker delivery services stretched thin due to high demand across the district. The shortage has left staff struggling with basic care.

One resident, Muda Siru, who rushed his child to the facility, recounted how treatment was delayed because nurses had difficulty finding clean bedsheets.

Local leaders warn that the crisis is worsening. Assemblyman for the community, Frank Enyinda, noted that residents are paying exorbitant prices for water, with some forced to travel long distances to Senya Breku to fetch supplies.

“My people are suffering. A bucket of water is now selling at an exorbitant price. Not many can afford. The rate of infections may increase,” he lamented.

Some households are now resorting to unsafe water sources, including shallow pools also used by animals.

The chief, who disclosed that he spends nearly GHS 1,000 weekly on tanker services, warned that the community’s plight will deepen if urgent measures are not taken.

Dwantoahene of the community, Nana Kwesi Arhin, has appealed to the government to intervene decisively. Linking the crisis to illegal mining activities, he said: “I watched the news on Channel One TV and realised the situation is caused by the shutdown of the Kwanyako plant due to galamsey.
