The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend the broadcasting licence of MultiChoice owned DSTV if it fails to reduce subscription prices by August 7, 2025.

According to the Minister, the directive follows MultiChoice’s refusal to adjust prices in line with the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

His comments follow a high-level meeting held with DSTV officials on Friday, July 4, 2025, aimed at securing a reduction in subscription costs. The engagement was triggered by mounting public complaints over the affordability and fairness of DSTV’s pricing model.

DSTV, in a nine-page response to the Ministry, argued that the cedi had depreciated by over 200% over the last eight years, and claimed the recent gains in the local currency were unsustainable and thus insufficient grounds for a price reduction.

But Mr George disagreed, reiterating that the government would not tolerate price rigidity at the expense of Ghanaians.

“On the 21st of July this year, I received a nine-page letter from MultiChoice detailing why they were refusing to reduce their pricing.

“Their reasons included that the Cedi had depreciated in the preceding eight years by 240%. And they claimed that my request for a reduction on the basis of the appreciation of the Cedi was unfounded because in their words, the appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi over the last six months has been a fluke which could not be sustainable.

“As minister, my fidelity is to the Ghanaian people. I have had to act in the interest of the Ghanaian people. And I believe that the Ghanaian people have been fleeced and exploited for too long. I wrote back to the NCA on Monday. And directed the NCA in that letter to suspend the broadcasting license of DSTV effective 7th of August 2025 if they fail to effect a reduction in their bundle prices

I cannot as minister, serving the Ghanaian people, continue to watch what can best be described as plain stealing happening to the Ghanaian people.”

He made the comments during a ministerial briefing on Friday, August 1, updating the public on key developments in the digital and communication sector for the second quarter of the year.

The standoff comes amid growing public outrage over DSTV’s charges, with many calling for urgent regulatory intervention to ensure affordable access to satellite television services.

I have learnt with deep sorrow the passing of Ghanaian music legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba.

Lumba’s unmatched musical genius provided the soundtrack to our lives, carrying us through various phases of life. The beats to his memorable songs may have died down, but his enduring legacy will echo through the ages.

On behalf of the Government of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones for this irreplaceable loss.

The Minister of Finance has disclosed that an ongoing audit by the Audit Service has led to the discovery of more than 53,000 workers who are designated, resigned or retired on the government’s payroll.

According to Dr Cassiel Ato Forson , the audit also found over 14,000 workers whose credentials could not be verified.

Dr Forson, who made these remarks during his presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, indicated that a recovery of unearned salary from these persons is estimated to be over GH¢150 million.

“Mr. Speaker, the Ghana Audit Service has completed 91% of the payroll audit. 173. So far, the Audit Service has not been able to identify and verify over 14,000 workers. Again, they have identified 53,311 separated staff – staff who are either on retirement, resigned, terminated, leave without pay or deceased, and yet remain on government payroll,” he said.

He added, “The Audit Service expects to recover GH¢150.4 million of unearned salaries from the separated staff over the 2023 and 2024 period.”

The minister indicated that to eliminate these “ghost names” from the payroll, the government would start sanctioning all the people who are responsible for validating their salaries.

Provisional results from the Ablekuma North rerun indicate a tight contest between NDC’s Ewurabena Aubyn and NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie. See full polling station breakdown.

Residents of Ablekuma North have cast their ballots in a highly anticipated parliamentary rerun, finally choosing a representative for the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

Out of 6,839 eligible voters, constituents had to decide between Ewurabena Aubyn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The rerun, which covered 19 polling stations, followed months of legal wrangling after results from the 2024 General Election were left incomplete due to disputed pink sheets and security issues.

Voting on Friday, July 11, 2025, was mostly peaceful, despite isolated incidents of violence and journalist assault earlier in the day. Security was tightened as counting began across centres.
