At its core, World Emoji Day is about celebrating expression. Emojis help people show emotions, reactions, and ideas without always needing words. They cross language barriers and make conversations more relatable, especially in texts, social media posts, and even work emails.
Over the years, emojis have evolved from simple smiley faces to a wide range of icons that represent cultures, identities, food, professions, and more. The celebration is also a chance to talk about inclusion and diversity in digital symbols.
In today’s digital-first world, emojis are more than cute icons, they’re a language of emotion. Whether you're cheering someone up with a 😂, showing appreciation with a 🙏, or celebrating with a 🎉, emojis help add tone and feeling to plain text. They make digital conversations feel more fun and heartwarming.

This day is a chance to appreciate the creativity, diversity, and connection emojis bring to everyday conversations.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the assault of a journalist during the coverage of the Ablekuma North rerun.

The association is calling for a swift, thorough, and transparent criminal investigation into the incident.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour expressed deep outrage over the attack, which has triggered national concern following the emergence of viral video footage showing a police officer physically assaulting a journalist.

The reporter, identified as Kwabena Agyekum Banahene, was allegedly confronted and assaulted by a uniformed police officer who demanded he vacate the polling station—despite other journalists being allowed to remain on-site.

Exposed: Face of thug who attacked JOYNEWS journalist at Ablekuma North rerun

This is the face of the man who assaulted JOYNEWS digital journalist Sally Martey during violent scenes at the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary rerun on Friday 11 July 2025.
The man, wearing a cloth mask that partially concealed his face, turned deliberately toward Sally as she walked near the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station, approached her from behind, and launched a vicious and unprovoked attack, slapping her and shoving her forcefully.
“I did nothing. He just came at me and attacked me,” a shaken Sally recounted after the incident.
Sally Martey, known for her extensive on-the-ground coverage of major protests and political events in Accra, was on assignment to report on the rerun when the assault occurred. The attacker was believed to be part of a group of well-coordinated thugs who stormed the polling station, disrupting the voting process.

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has vehemently condemned the physical assault of three journalists covering the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency of the Greater Accra Region on Friday, July 11, 2025.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of violence against media professionals in Ghana, raising serious concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists, particularly during electoral processes.
Kwabena Agyekum Banahene of the EIB Network, Salomey Martey of the Multimedia Group, and Vida Wiafe of Amansan TV (ATV) were all victims of the assaults, which occurred while they were reporting live from polling stations within the constituency.
