Donald Trump Wins 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, Defeating Kamala Harris

In a closely watched 2024 U.S. presidential race, Donald Trump has been projected as the winner, securing his return to the White House by surpassing the critical 270 electoral vote threshold. Trump’s victory came after clinching major battleground states, including Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, each of which played a decisive role in pushing him past the electoral line.

The election results underscore significant shifts in voter sentiment, especially in economically sensitive regions where Trump’s messages on economic nationalism and immigration reform resonated. His focus on reducing government regulations and addressing trade issues drew strong support from voters across industrial and rural America, who backed his promises of job creation and economic revitalization.

With the Republican Party also projected to regain control of the Senate, the political landscape in Washington is set for a marked shift. Trump’s legislative agenda could see more straightforward paths for approval, potentially affecting judicial appointments and policy areas including energy, immigration, and international trade.

Kamala Harris, who campaigned on a platform centered around healthcare, climate action, and social equity, won key states like Virginia and Hawaii but was unable to capture enough support in swing states to secure victory. Her supporters have expressed commitment to continuing efforts for progressive policies, with Democratic leaders noting that the election highlighted ongoing ideological divides within the electorate.

Trump’s return to the presidency is expected to set a new tone in American domestic and foreign policy, with strong implications for both national and international stakeholders.

Prof. Amartey, who has led the institution for the past eight years, was celebrated for his remarkable contributions to UPSA’s development. York University Brings Canadian Educational Opportunities to Ghana

Toronto-based York University Expands Engagement in Ghana with Event at British Columbia College in Madina
York University, one of Canada’s largest and most diverse institutions, brought a slice of Canadian academia to Ghana during an event at British Columbia College in Madina. This gathering was part of an ongoing effort by York University’s Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) to expand its global presence and connect with Ghanaian students, parents, and educators interested in Canadian educational experiences and opportunities.

As one of Canada’s top five comprehensive universities, York offers over 90 undergraduate programs, allowing students the flexibility to combine majors, bridge disciplines, or enhance their academic portfolio with certificates. During the event, representatives highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering global engagement and encouraging students to think beyond their immediate environments.

John Justin McMurtry, Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University, underscored the value of a well-rounded, critical education in today’s rapidly evolving job market. "Our programs equip students not just with technical knowledge, like information technology and big data, but also with the critical thinking skills necessary for the jobs of the future," he stated. McMurtry emphasized that York’s academic training fosters skills essential for a wide range of professions, with a strong emphasis on developing innovative and adaptable thinkers.

Highlighting York's commitment to strengthening connections in Ghana, McMurtry noted the importance of forming partnerships across diverse areas, from environmental research to political studies. “Ghana is one of our priority countries,” he said, explaining the university’s dedication to expanding access and support for Ghanaian students.

M.J. Maciel Jorge, Associate Dean of Global & Community Engagement for LA&PS, elaborated on York University’s commitment to student support. “We’re not just offering education; we’re preparing students to become global citizens,” he said. York’s support network includes advisors, legal guidance on immigration matters, and dedicated staff to assist students throughout the application and transition processes, ensuring a smooth path from enrollment to graduation.

British Columbia College’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Benedict Nii Tetteh Yartey, praised York University’s approach, noting that preparing students to be global citizens requires more than academic achievement. “It’s about equipping learners with employability skills—critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and collaboration skills," Dr. Yartey said. He shared that British Columbia College has embedded these competencies into its curriculum to better prepare students for a globalized workforce, where employers seek candidates based on skills and potential, rather than background.

While studying abroad can be financially challenging, Dr. Yartey and York’s representatives emphasized the value of the investment. A parent at the event, Ebenezer, expressed confidence in the potential return on this educational investment, particularly as the 21st century is increasingly shaped by fields like artificial intelligence and technology.

For Ghanaian students aspiring to study abroad, York University’s expanded engagement provides a promising pathway. By creating opportunities for Ghanaian students to study at one of Canada’s leading universities, York aims to cultivate a new generation of globally minded leaders equipped to make meaningful contributions in a rapidly changing world.

Alan Kyerematen Visits Tema on Greater Accra Campaign Caravan Tour with Movement for Change

Alan Kyerematen, the presidential candidate for the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC), officially introduced himself as an independent candidate to the people of Tema as part of his Greater Accra campaign with the Movement for Change (M4C). The visit was a significant part of Kyerematen’s Caravan Tour aimed at building grassroots support ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Kyerematen's first stop was at the Tema Traditional Council, where he was warmly received by the Acting President of the Council, Nii Adjetey Agbo II, along with other local leaders. During their meeting, both parties discussed issues that have long affected the Tema community, particularly around land development and management. Kyerematen also presented traditional gifts, including a bottle of schnapps, two cartons of soft drinks, and an undisclosed sum of money.

Addressing the Council, Nii Adjetey Agbo II voiced deep concerns over what he described as years of land mismanagement by successive governments. “For a long time, our lands have been sold by the government for things that do not benefit the community,” he said. "I'm not pointing fingers at any specific political party, but these lands have been used wastefully, and our youth, who are the backbone of nation-building, have been overlooked."

Agbo expressed the Council’s commitment to supporting Kyerematen's candidacy, but also emphasized their intent to hold him accountable if he is elected. He assured Kyerematen that the Council would ensure he upholds his promises to protect local lands and support youth development in Tema.

In response, Kyerematen committed himself to defending Tema’s land rights if elected, vowing to end the sale of lands for projects that do not benefit the local community. "Our lands should empower the people who have owned them for generations—not line the pockets of a few at the expense of the many,” Kyerematen stated. Kyerematen pledged to enact policies that secure community ownership and halt the sale of land for projects that fail to address the real needs of local residents. He further assured the Council that under his leadership, lands would be used to create job opportunities, educational facilities, and other essential services that align with the community’s vision for progress. After the meeting, a priest of the land performed a traditional ceremony, which was witnessed by a large crowd gathered to see the courtesy call.

As the Caravan Tour continues, Kyerematen and the Movement for Change are set to visit various communities at Tema , engaging residents, fish mongers and fishermen in a spirited interaction during his Caravan Tour visit to Tema, marking a critical moment in his Greater Accra campaign. Kyerematen’s stop at the local market, a bustling center for fishing trade, was aimed at listening to the challenges faced by the fishing community, which forms a key part of Tema’s economy.
the fishmongers, many expressed frustration over fluctuating fish prices, high costs of fishing gear, and concerns over declining fish stocks due to illegal fishing practices from the crowd. They cited a lack of support from previous administrations, saying their voices have often gone unheard despite their significant contribution to the local economy.

Kyerematen, acknowledging these concerns, emphasized his commitment to revitalizing the fishing sector as part of his broader vision for Ghana’s economic transformation. He promised to ensure better regulatory measures that protect local fishermen from unfair competition and to provide more accessible financing for fishing gear and equipment. “Fishing is not just a livelihood; it’s a way of life for many here in Tema,” Kyerematen remarked. “Under my leadership, we will prioritize sustainable policies that support your trade, your families, and the future of the industry.” The conversation also touched on the limited access to cold storage facilities, which has been a long-standing issue affecting the preservation of fish and seafood. Fishmongers noted that this challenge often leads to significant losses. Kyerematen responded with a promise to establish more community-based storage facilities, ensuring that the industry’s profits stay within the community.

The tour serves as an essential platform for Kyerematen to connect directly with voters, positioning himself as an alternative to the major political parties and promising a new approach to addressing longstanding concerns in communities across the country.
