Ghana’s capital of Accra has found itself in a list of the most expensive cities in Africa.

This is a reflection on tax hikes, petrol and food costs. Other countries in the list include Cape Town (South Africa), Lagos (Nigeria) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia).

The list is drawn from multiple independent financial and economic sources across Africa.

It is estimated that a family of four’s monthly living costs total 2,140 GH’s excluding rent, whilst a single person’s costs reach just under 600 GH’s excluding rent. Many of Accra’s city goers claim that the estimation is too conservative as costs are far higher.

African-American doctors are suggesting that there is a link between the hair relaxers black women in Africa and across the world use, and cancers often diagnosed in black women.

The most commonly diagnosed being ovarian cancer (cancer of the ovaries) which can have a negative effect on a woman’s ability to conceive and give birth.

The American Food and Drugs Authority is considering a ban on formaldehyde, one of the allegedly dangerous chemicals found in some hair relaxers. A ban in the States could open the door for a ban in other countries including Ghana and the United Kingdom.

According to the Law firm Sokolove, “as of January 2024 thousands of lawsuits have been filled against L’Oreal claiming that the brand’s hair relaxers have caused cancer.”

Do you think that African women should stop using hair relaxers?
