One of the most quintessential design elements for each Olympic Games is the pictograms used as visual shorthand for each sport. Anyone who watches the Olympics will find themselves immersed in a sea of these small icons appearing throughout the Games in all sorts of contexts.

Diving into Designers’ Favorite Olympic Sport: the Pictograms 🥇

One of the most quintessential design elements for each Olympic Games is the pictograms used as visual shorthand for each sport. Anyone who watches the Olympics will find themselves immersed in a sea of these small icons appearing throughout the Games in all sorts of contexts.

It’s essential to have a visual language for the Olympic Games since many athletes and viewers speak different verbal languages. “Pictograms were designed to create a universal and easily understandable language,” writes Markus Osterwalder in his book Olympic Games – The Design. Osterwalder is a graphic designer and a bonafide Olympics historian obsessed with Olympics design. Aside from his book and his accompanying The Olympic Design project, Osterwalder also curated the exhibition “Olympic Language – Exploring the Look of the Games” at the Olympic Museum in Switzerland, which was on view in 2018 and 2019.

Facilitated by Book dash and Goethe Institut Johannesburg, I worked with some great talents to create this children’s book (Dudu’s Hat) which is now available for free download at https://bookdash.org/books/dudus-hat/

Children are going to be fascinated by the story of Dudu and Dumisani in a book titled, Dudu’s Hat, which is one of ten amazing African storybooks that were produced in Johannesburg within 12 hours by volunteer literary and creative professionals from across the globe.

This event was facilitated by Book Dash and Goethe Institut SA. This makes 138, the total number of books which have been produced by Book Dash; a non-profit children’s book publisher which aims to increase literacy among children. Their vision is for every child to own a hundred books by the age of five. So far, 660,000 African storybooks have been distributed in different African languages. Book Dash aims to increase that number to 1 million by the end of 2020.

The books are produced under an open-license, which means that ANYONE can download (from bookdash.org), translate (if need be), print and distribute them. This is Book Dash’s way of ensuring that African storybooks in different African languages are available to everyone all over the world.

I was glad to be part of the skilled individuals from across the world who participated in this year’s Book Dash. After 12 exhausting and fulfilling hours, I can really say that I SURVIVED BOOK DASH. -InstitutJohannesburg
