Theme: Jesus Sees You Too
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Have you ever had someone look at you and truly see you - not just what’s on the outside, but your heart? In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus doing just that. He looks at a man named Matthew, a tax collector, someone most people would ignore or even despise, and He says just two words: “Follow me.” That moment changed Matthew’s life forever.
Now, if you or I were choosing disciples for Jesus, we probably wouldn’t pick Matthew. He was a tax collector. He was seen as a sinner, a traitor, someone unclean. Jesus saw Matthew sitting at the tax booth and saw more than a tax collector - He saw a disciple, an apostle, a future evangelist. And Jesus didn’t say, “Clean up your life first.” He said, “Follow me.” And Matthew got up and followed Him right away.
Sometimes we think Jesus is only calling the holy, the perfect, the well-behaved. But the truth is, He’s calling you. Right where you are. With all your flaws, your history, your regrets, and your doubts. Jesus sees you sitting in your “tax booth,” whatever that may be. Maybe it’s your routine, your job, your mistakes, or the life you’ve built. And He says to you today, just like He said to Matthew: “Follow me.”
He’s not looking for perfection. He’s looking for people who will say yes.
Later in the Gospel, Jesus is criticized for eating with “tax collectors and sinners.” The religious people couldn’t understand it. But Jesus answers them with something that should stick with us: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
That’s good news for us. Because most of us, if we’re honest, are not the righteous - we’re the ones who need mercy. And the amazing thing is: Jesus loves to show mercy. He came not to push sinners away, but to bring them home.
So how do we respond to this calling of Jesus?
First, we have to see ourselves the way Jesus sees us - not as a mess to be thrown out, but as someone worth loving, someone worth saving.
Second, we need to be like Matthew and say yes. Maybe that means leaving behind some part of our old life, something we’re clinging to that’s holding us back.
And third, let’s look at others the way Jesus looked at Matthew. Let’s not judge people by their worst mistakes. Let’s be people of mercy. Let’s be the ones who sit at the table with those others avoid - just like Jesus did.
So remember today: Jesus sees more than we do. He sees the potential in the people others ignore. He sees hope in hearts that feel broken. And He sees you, not for what you’ve done, but for who you can become in His love.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for seeing us with eyes of mercy. Thank You for calling us, even when we feel unworthy. Give us the courage to follow You, to leave behind what we don’t need, and to live as people of mercy. Amen.

Amen.**
