An estimated 28,000 straw-coloured fruit bats known as Eidolon Helvum, valued at GHȻ 256,000, are sold annually in Ghana as bush meat, Dr. Joseph Somuah Akuamoah, Executive Member of Good Life Ghana, has said.
He said the bats were sold in just 400-kilometre radius, an indication of the role bush meat, which is a source of Ebola Viral Disease (EVD)infection, could play in the spread of the disease in case of an outbreak in the country.
He has therefore re-echoed calls for the reduction of bush meat consumption, with a stern caution to hunters against dead animals they found during hunting since the game might have died of EVD due to infection from one of the affected countries.

Reports say some salaried workers in Ho in the Volta Region say they seem to have found a creative way to beat what they describe as harsh economic conditions in the country.

According to the report the workers said they have resorted to eating ‘gari’ and beans as a means of ensuring survival. Known in the local parlance as “borbor” kple gali", the workers say the food is not only cheaper and nutritious, but sustains them throughout the day.

The outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in West Africa is accelerating ahead of the efforts to control it, according to UN officials.The World Health Organization (WHO) says there are now more than 3,500 confirmed cases of the disease in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. More than 1, 500 people have died from the disease which causes internal and external bleeding.Cases of Ebola have also been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria and Senegal.

Reports say more than 30,000 candidates who were successful in the 2014 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) may not be able to access university education in the 2014/2015 academic year.

This according to the report is because two major public universities – the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) – had closed admissions for the 2014/2015 academic year long before the results were released.
