Spot thousands of flamingos painting Ethiopia's Lake Chitu pink. This small crater lake in Abijatta-Shalla National Park, 287 km south of Addis Ababa, buzzes with life thanks to its algae-rich soda waters.

Flamingos thrive here year-round, feeding on blue-green algae blooms. Hot springs feed the lake, creating a unique spot in the Rift Valley. Locals know it for its soapy waters, but conservation groups work to protect it from silt and deforestation.

President Ruto handed keys to 120 new homeowners at the Emgwen Boma Yangu Estate in Nandi County yesterday. It's a big win for Kenya's push to build 250,000 affordable units a year and replace informal settlements.

Local residents, including five with disabilities, now have modern two-bedroom homes with electricity, water, and security. Paul Koech Limo, who registered in 2023, called it a game changer. Josephine Chekemboi loves the easy access to town after years of tough commutes.

The project creates over 640,000 youth jobs and includes sites like Chesumei with shops and sports facilities. Ruto laid its foundation stone too. Sales for 100 more Emgwen units continue on the Boma Yangu portal.

President Ruto said local people, not the prominent, benefit most. This transforms lives and local economies.

President John Dramani Mahama just commissioned a major new LPG vessel in South Korea, set to power up energy supplies for Ghana and West Africa.

Named MT Asharami Ghana, the ship comes from a partnership between Sahara Group and West Africa Gas Limited. It boosts transport capacity at a time when Ghana makes half its LPG needs locally and imports the rest. Mahama called it a milestone for the global supply chain.

It strengthens infrastructure and helps stabilise prices through better logistics.

LPG means cleaner cooking for families ditching charcoal and firewood. This cuts pollution, protects forests and improves health. A real win for everyday life.

Ghana is gearing up for a big aviation comeback with a new national airline set to take off within the next year.

After more than a decade without a state carrier – since Ghana International Airlines folded in 2010 – the government has formed a task force to make it happen. Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe says preparations are on track, with regulatory work, staffing and partners in place. They're learning from past mistakes like debt issues with Ghana Airways, opting for a leaner, market-focused model.

“Within the next 12 months, we will be celebrating a Ghanaian airline flying to the rest of the world,” Nikpe promised.

Upgrades at Kotoka International Airport in Accra will help position it as a West African hub, boosting passenger links and cargo for perishables and e-commerce. This could transform travel and trade here.

Rwanda and Kenya just made it easier for fintech companies to work across their borders with a new licensing deal.

The National Bank of Rwanda and Central Bank of Kenya signed the Kigali Declaration on Fintech License Passporting at the Inclusive FinTech Forum 2026. It lets licensed payment providers skip full re-licensing when expanding, cutting costs and speeding up digital payments.

BNR Governor Soraya Hakuziyaremye said:

This marks an important achievement in our collective efforts to strengthen financial integration.

Kenya's Deputy Governor Gerald Nyaoma added that multiple licences slow innovation, but this framework changes that. It builds on Rwanda's Ghana deal and East African plans.

The US Embassy in Accra just opened more than 2,000 B1/B2 visa slots for the next two weeks. Perfect timing if you plan a business trip, family visit, tourism or even World Cup action.

These slots cover short-term travel needs. The embassy posted on X: "We have more than 2,000 visa appointment slots available in the next two weeks for B1/B2 travelers , whether you're planning a business trip, visiting family, general tourism, or wanting to watch the World Cup!" If your appointment is later this year, shift it forward now. Head to their visa page for details.

Note the bigger picture. New US rules pause immigrant visas for Ghanaians due to public assistance rates. Interviews go ahead, but issuance is on hold. H-1B and student visa seekers must make social media public for vetting.
