THE SEVEN PARAMOUNTCIES OF THE NZEMAS.

Like any other Akan state or tribe, Nzema has chiefs and a king. They have paramount chiefs who pay homages to the king.

A paramountcy consists of several geographical divisions such as towns, villages, suburbs, and even cottages.

In the Nzemaland, there are seven paramountcies. Unlike the Asante kingdom, the Nzema kingdom used to be one solid state, and even a kingdom before the subdivision began.

Under the reign of King Kaku Aka the first, Nzema became a centralized state and later a kingdom. It is noted that in the times of King Kaku Aka I, if he summoned chiefs to Adoabo, you dared not appear late under the excuse of “I live faraway.”

However, after his capture, the kingdom started falling apart under the rule of King Ebanyele I.

Smaller groups were formed under the same kingdom and broke away from the two main groups that Ɛbanyenlɛ created. The half that was able to stay somewhat firm during this period of chaos even remains two paramountcies till date.

The very first major division of the kingdom was Dwɔmɔlɔ and Ɛlɛmgbɛlɛ. Nevertheless, more divisions were experienced. The Dwɔmɔlɔ division which is known as the Western Nzema Council, was divided into two that is the Dwɔmɔlɔ division and the Basame division.

The other strong half that is Ɛlɛmgbɛlɛ, which represents the Eastern Nzema Council, was also divided into two parties. It constituted Ɛlɛmgbɛlɛ, and Ɛvaloɛ, Adwɔmɔlɔ and Egila.

Unfortunately, the Ɛvaloɛ Adwɔmɔlɔ and Egila division could not stand as one; hence they broke down further into five smaller parties. Today these divisions are known as the Egila, Adwɔmɔlɔ, Nsanye, Upper Axim and Lower Axim divisions.

With the test of time, the Nzema kingdom has evolved a lot. Only time can tell if they can one day come together or break down further into more divisions.

It is believed that the curse (the head of Nzema will always be separated from the other parts of its body) laid on Nzema by its king Kaku Aka I, will forever torment Nzema and fuel its divisions until the wrong done to him is righted.

True to his words, till date, Nzema has never been united as all these paramountcies remain autonomous and pay no homage to any particular king in the kingdom.

It has even come to our notice that there is another paramountcy springing out of the Ellembelle paramountcy which will have its capital at Awiaso (the hometown of King Kaku Aka I). The division’s head is a descendant of King Kaku Aka I, and his mission is to reunite Nzema to its former original state.

As it stands, Nzema has seven official paramountcies which are widely recognized and gazetted. They are Jomoro, Ellembelle, Ajomoro, Gwira, Nsein, Upper Axim and Lower Axim.

Now, how can the wrong done to the great king be righted?

Or you belong to the school of thought which says “Kaku Aka’s ability as a king has never resurfaced on the earth; hence, Nzema will be in the ruins so long as it lacks THE MAN”?

THE SEVEN ANCIENT CLANS OF THE NZEMAS

Naturally, in this world, everyone is born into a family. In Ghana, this is not so different. Every Ghanaian is born into a family. And in the Akan community, every family belongs to a clan. The clans make up the community.

According to oral tradition, Nzemas migrated to their present location in groups. Each of these groups constituted a clan. Members of a clan are traditionally related by blood.

In Nzema, there are seven existent clans. The clans are namely, Ndweafoɔ, Adahonle, Asɛmangama, Alɔnwɔba, Ezohile, Azanwule, and Nvavile. All the clans are special in a way. Every clan has its own totem. They also have special character traits that is very distinct from each other’s. You will get to see them in the rest of this piece. Now let’s get to see them one after the other.

Nvavile is the first ever clan of Nzemaland. They were the first Nzemas to arrive on the soil. They are good drummers. The Parrot is their totem. They introduced the Kundum festival to the Nzemas. They are also the immediate brothers of the Asɛmangama.

Next is the Asɛmangama clan. They were said to be on the same voyage as the Nvavile clan. However, they parted ways somewhere along the line. They are good business men and women. And their clan’s totem is the Crab.

Adding up, the Ndweafoɔ, this is the clan whose totem is the Dog. The members of this clan are mainly submissive as their totem. They also possess the Fire symbol. Nzemas are having the numbers now because of their fertility in childbirth.

Again, there is the Adahonle group. These ones are well known for their good parenting skills. Their totem is a bunch of Palm Fruits. And they are also good at farming. One would definitely need food to be able to fit into the good parenting section.

Notwithstanding, there are the singers amongst the Nzemas. These are the Azanwule folks. They are so good at singing dirges and composing them. They say if you ever encounter an Nzema whose voice is as melodious as that of a bird, you need no introduction, that’s one of them. Their totem is the Buffalo. They also introduced the yam crop to the Nzemas.

Nevertheless, you can never taste a good palm wine on Nzemaland without crediting the Alɔnwɔba man. The Anlɔnwɔba clan is the fraternity of good palm wine tappers. And also, they are good farmers as well. The Raffia Palm is their totem.

Last but not the least, is the Ezohile clan. These people call themselves the royals. You could see this in how they dress. They slay like kings and rich people. They love to show off. And their totem is the Crow.

These are the clans of the Nzema people. As at now, the clan system is still relevant in every Nzema community. They are currently available for functional purposes like funerals and marriages.

Every clan has its head or leader. The head of the clan is called Abusuakpanyinli (clan head). These heads represent their various clans in the king’s palace. They partake in decision process of the land.

Every paramountcy in the land is built around these clans. Every paramountcy has that one clan that queens and kings are chosen from. It is the same in the towns and villages.

Would you like to know more about your clan?

THE ORIGIN OF THE NZEMA PEOPLE OF GHANA

The origin of the Nzema people of Ghana.
Nzema is one of Ghana’s popular coastal states. Many Ghanaians do remember the tribe as one that produced the first president of Ghana.

They are still one of the undying people of Ghana. However, no current book has been able to point out the origin of these people. Hence, this article is set to expose the origin of these people and some inevitable facts about them.

First, Nzemas are not one of Ghana’s indigenous tribes like the guans and the others. The nzemas had migrated from a different country to their current day settlements.

In the 12th century, a group of people led by the man, Adwomoloa and other men landed in Ghana. They were said to have belonged to a particular clan which is the Nvavile clan. Agona is what the Asantes call it and Anona is the fante name for the clan.

Before the time of arrival, the nzemas used to be settlers in Southern Sudan, around North Africa. They lived in an area around the southern part of the Egyptian Nile, present day Sudan.

The Nzemas lived in Nugi which is presently in Sudan. As it stands, one of the royal stools of the Nvavile people of Nzema is in Egypt. This can be located in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt.

Moreover, the activities of war and conquest, trading and other factors played a major role in their migration. As farmers, their search for a better farmland can not be neglected as a factor. All these things coming together pushed the Nzema state to their present day settlements.

According to oral tradition and some other fragments of history, the early Nzemas had longed for a land near water bodies. It is stated in oral tradition that, the deity that led the people at the time was in need of a land that is closer to a river and the sea.

Nevertheless, you can see that the present day settlement of Nzemas is in between the Gulf of Guinea and renowned rivers like Tano, Ankobra, Pra and the likes.

Notably, the first king of the Nzemas was King Anobile Aka. Nzema was then a small group of people and not as compared to what we see now.

These people became a coastal state through the efforts of the mighty lord, King Kaku Aka I. He was the first king to extend the shores of Nzema into other lands.
