Natural Pest Control: Using Diatomaceous Earth and Cloves Against Bed Bugs and More

Facing a bed bug infestation can be a daunting and uncomfortable experience. However, turning to natural remedies like diatomaceous earth (DE) and cloves can provide safe, effective solutions without the use of harsh chemicals.

This article will guide you through using these natural substances to combat bed bugs and explain their broader uses against other household pests.

Combating Bed Bugs with Diatomaceous Earth: Diatomaceous earth is a powdery substance made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic

organisms known as diatoms. The powder works by dehydrating the bed bugs through the absorption of oils and fats from their exoskeletons, leading to their demise.

Application of Diatomaceous Earth for Bed Bugs:

Clean and Prep Your Space: Vacuum your sleeping areas and surroundings thoroughly.

Apply DE: Sprinkle a fine layer of food-grade diatomaceous earth across your mattress, bed frame, along edges of carpets, and any cracks or crevices where bed bugs may hide.

Leave the DE: Allow the diatomaceous earth to remain for several days to a week. During this time, avoid wet cleaning the treated areas.

Clean Up: Vacuum up the DE and dead bed bugs after treatment. Repeat if necessary until all signs of bed bugs disappear.

Using Cloves to Repel Bed Bugs: Cloves act as a natural repellent due to their strong, aromatic oils which bed bugs and many other insects find distasteful.

Application of Cloves for Bed Bugs:

Cloves Sachets: Place whole cloves or clove powder in small sachets and tuck these into and around your mattress, in drawers, and closets.

Clove Oil Spray: Mix clove essential oil with water and lightly spray your bed frame and surrounding areas. Refresh this spray every few days for best results.

Expanding the Use to Other Insects: Both DE and cloves are not only effective against bed bugs but also work well in managing other common household pests:

Cockroaches and Ants: Sprinkle DE in areas where these insects frequent, such as kitchen counters, pipe entries, and window sills. Place clove sachets in pantry areas and under sinks to deter their presence.

Fleas: Apply DE to your pet’s bedding and resting areas to control flea infestations. Cloves can be used in sachets around these areas to enhance protection.

Mosquitoes: While DE isn’t effective against flying insects, clove oil can be used in sprays to repel mosquitoes from living spaces.

Using diatomaceous earth and cloves offers a powerful, natural way to address not only bed bugs but also a variety of other household pests. These methods are safe when used properly and provide a non-toxic alternative to chemical pesticides. Consistent application and preventive measures are key to maintaining a pest-free environment

16 arrested, 64 phones seized during WASSCE exams – WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has reported a rise in examination malpractice during this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), for School Candidates. Monitoring teams discovered cases of impersonation, unauthorized mobile phone use, and the sharing of exam questions among candidates and some invigilators.

John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, disclosed that 16 people were arrested at different examination centres, and during the Elective Mathematics paper, 64 mobile phones were confiscated from a single school.

In one notable case, two individuals at Ghana College in Kasoa were sentenced to six months in prison for impersonation, while their accomplice received an eight-month sentence. At Christian IPS, Kukurantumi, a proprietor and an invigilator were found guilty of distributing exam questions through a WhatsApp group and are under police investigation. Additional cases occurred at schools including St. Vincent College and Yeji Senior High School, though some individuals evaded capture.

Highlighting the severity of the issue, he said, “We condemn these acts of dishonesty on the part of both teachers and candidates and urge all school heads to uphold the trust placed in them by ensuring that their schools stay above reproach.”

Kapi added that WAEC is determined to take strict action against any school authorities or individuals undermining the integrity of the exams, with scripts from implicated schools set to undergo thorough scrutiny. He also confirmed ongoing investigations into withheld Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, stating that “further assessments are being conducted to determine the final outcomes for candidates suspected of collusion.”

The WASSCE-SC, which began on August 5, 2025, involves 461,640 candidates from 1,021 schools and will conclude on September 19, 2025. Meanwhile, the BECE, conducted from June 11 to June 18, 2025, had provisional results released on August 23, 2025. WAEC continues to enforce measures to restore the integrity of Ghana’s examination system, emphasizing fairness and honesty for all candidates.

*NCA, MultiChoice Ghana Engage Over DSTV Pricing*

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has initiated discussions with MultiChoice Ghana regarding concerns over DSTV pricing. In response to the NCA's notice of intention to suspend their authorization, MultiChoice Ghana has agreed to participate in a Stakeholder Committee to evaluate DSTV pricing.

The Stakeholder Committee, scheduled to meet on Monday, September 8, 2025, will comprise representatives from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, the NCA, MultiChoice Ghana, and MultiChoice Africa. While no immediate price cuts have been announced, MultiChoice Ghana has expressed willingness to engage in discussions to find an amicable solution.

This development follows a fine of GH₵ 10,000 per day imposed on MultiChoice Ghana for failing to submit detailed pricing information to the NCA, effective August 14, 2025. The NCA has confirmed that further discussions have been held with MultiChoice Ghana to ensure transparency and compliance with Ghana's communication laws.

The outcome of the Stakeholder Committee's work will determine the future of DSTV pricing in Ghana. Subscribers can expect more clarity on pricing reforms after the committee's meeting on September 8, 2025.

President Mahama to roll out 10km road project in every constituency from 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government will prioritize road infrastructure, beginning next year with the construction of 10 kilometers of roads, drains, and pavements in each of Ghana’s 166 constituencies annually.

Speaking at the relaunch of the National Sanitation Day at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Accra, President Mahama said the initiative will enhance the aesthetics of communities while improving sanitation.

“From next year, we will do 10 kilometers of roads and drains per constituency so that we can improve the general environment of our districts,” President Mahama said.

He explained that the programme will also serve as an incentive for districts to maintain cleanliness.

“What is the use of rehabilitating roads and building drains only to find them littered with garbage? This initiative will encourage districts to keep their surroundings clean,” he added.

The President linked the road initiative to his flagship 24-hour economy plan, adding that sanitation services such as refuse collection and cesspit emptying will be moved to nighttime to reduce traffic congestion and public nuisance.
