*WENDA Hosts a Successful Breast Cancer Awareness Program at Bibiani Senior High School*

Last weekend, the Western-North Development Association(WENDA) organized a Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness program at Bibiani Senior High School as facilitated by the Women's Wing of the association. The event aimed to educate the youth on breast cancer prevention, early detection, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The program was graced by the school's management, representatives from FOHOW Health Organization, and experienced health practitioners from Bibiani Government Hospital. Their insights were invaluable, offering the students an opportunity to engage with experts on a critical health issue.

In addition, General Secretary of the association gave an insightful message on the need to ensure peace before, during and after the December 7 polls.

The overwhelming participation of the students demonstrated their eagerness to learn more about this life-threatening condition and how they can contribute to raising awareness in their communities.

We are grateful to all stakeholders for their support and active involvement in making the event a success.

*The Impact of CETAG Strike on Students: A Call for Urgent Action:SRC General Secretary Of Wiawso College of Education speaks out*

In recent weeks, the ongoing strike action by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has raised significant concerns among students across various institutions. As Hon. Samuel Osei Kokro, the SRC General Secretary for Wiawso College of Education, aptly points out, the repercussions of this strike have been profoundly felt within the student populace. It is crucial to address these impacts and urge all relevant stakeholders, including the government, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the National Labour Commission (NLC), and the Ministry of Finance, to expedite processes that would facilitate the resolution of this impasse.

The primary objective of any educational institution is to foster learning and personal development. However, the ongoing strike has disrupted academic schedules, leaving students in a state of uncertainty regarding their education. Classes have been suspended, assignments remain unassessed, and examinations are postponed indefinitely. This disruption not only hampers academic progress but also affects students' mental well-being. The anxiety stemming from an unclear academic calendar can lead to stress and frustration among students who are eager to complete their studies and pursue their professional aspirations.

Moreover, the ramifications of this strike extend beyond the immediate academic environment. Many students rely on timely graduation to secure employment opportunities or further their education. The prolonged strike could delay their entry into the job market or hinder their ability to pursue advanced studies. This situation is particularly concerning in a country where youth unemployment is already a pressing issue. Therefore, it is imperative that stakeholders recognize the urgency of the matter and work collaboratively to bring about a swift resolution.

Hon. Samuel Osei Kokroโ€™s appeal to the government and other stakeholders is not just a plea for the resumption of classes; it is a call for a collective commitment to prioritizing education in Ghana. The government must engage in constructive dialogue with CETAG to address the underlying issues that prompted the strike in the first place. This includes fair compensation for teachers, improved working conditions, and adequate resources for colleges of education.

Furthermore, GTEC and the NLC play vital roles in facilitating negotiations between the government and CETAG. Their involvement is crucial in ensuring that both parties reach an amicable agreement that respects the rights and needs of educators while safeguarding the interests of students. The Ministry of Finance must also be prepared to allocate necessary funds to support these negotiations and implement any agreed-upon solutions.

the ongoing CETAG strike has cast a shadow over the educational aspirations of many students in Ghana. Hon. Samuel Osei Kokro's call for urgent action resonates deeply with those affected by this situation. It is essential for all stakeholders to come together and prioritize the future of our students by resolving this strike promptly. Education is a fundamental right, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that it remains uninterrupted and accessible for all. Let us work towards a brighter future for our students, one where they can thrive academically and professionally without unnecessary hindrances.

Here is some detailed information about WENDA Ghana ยน ยฒ:

*Name*: The Western North Development Association (WENDA Ghana) is a pressure group in the western north region of Ghana.

*Objective*: The association's objective is to promote and champion the development of the region.

*History*: The association was originally called Sefwiman Development Association (SMDA) and was established in 2011 by Dr. Tony Tsina Addai, who is also the president of the association.

*Key milestones*:
- In 2012, the group could not get contact of both Suaman and Aowin paramount chiefs.
- In 2014, the association opened two offices in Bibiani town and Wiawso Dwenasi town.
- In 2016, the then-presidential candidate of the NPP Nana Addo said that it was time the Western North becomes its own separate, independent region.
- In 2016, the NPP added the creation of Western North Region to their manifesto.
- In 2024, the president of WENDA Ghana, Dr. Tony Tsina Addai, petitioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for a fundamental change in the process of appointing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and Regional Ministers.

*Petition*: Dr. Addaiโ€™s petition underscores the critical need for elected representation at the local level, citing compelling reasons why MMDCEs and Regional Ministers should be chosen through popular vote rather than presidential appointment. Some of the reasons include:
- Increased Accountability
- Representation
- Democratic Principles
- Reduced political interference
- Improved local development

*Other initiatives*: Dr. Addai emphasizes the importance of decentralizing decision-making, promoting meritocracy, fostering inclusivity and diversity, and strengthening democratic institutions at the grassroots level.
