This is Nii Amon Kotei the man behind the National Coat of Arms of Ghana 🇬ðŸ‡
Born on May 24, 1915, Nii Amon Kotei was not just an artist. He was a painter, sculptor, musician, and teacher whose creativity helped shape Ghana’s identity.
Before Ghana became independent, he designed the Coat of Arms, which was officially introduced on March 4, 1957. Every time we see it today, we see his vision of a proud, united Ghana.
During World War II, Kotei served in the Royal West African Frontier Force as a cartographer, drawing maps that helped soldiers navigate the battlefields.
He studied art at Achimota School and later at the London School of Printing and Graphic Art. After his studies, he came back home to teach art at Achimota, inspiring young artists to follow in his footsteps.
Kotei also created school crests, illustrations for government publications, and even stamps. His paintings celebrated the beauty and strength of Ghanaian women.
In 1997, President Jerry John Rawlings honored him with the Grand Medal (Civil Division) for his contribution to Ghana’s national identity.
Nii Amon Kotei’s story shows us how one person’s talent and vision can leave a lasting mark on a whole nation. Every time we look at the Ghana Coat of Arms, we remember him.
