UHAS ALUMNUS JAMES ARMO WINS PRESTIGIOUS GATES FOUNDATION RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Mr. James Armo, a distinguished 2023 graduate of the University of Health and Allied Sciences School of Allied Health Sciences, has been awarded a prestigious research fellowship funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Mr. Armo is the only Ghanaian and one of just six individuals globally selected for this highly competitive fellowship.

He will be undertaking advanced research training at the Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences, within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College, London.

His research focuses on the application of advanced neuroimaging techniques to improve the early diagnosis and prognosis of first-episode psychosis — a critical area in mental health that holds great promise for transforming patient care outcomes globally.

“This fellowship is a major milestone not only for Mr. Armo but also for UHAS and Ghana at large,” said UHAS Alumni President, Mr. Gabriel Agbanyo. “It demonstrates the outstanding calibre of our alumni and the global relevance of the education and training offered at UHAS.”

Mr. Armo’s selection for this fellowship highlights his commitment to advancing clinical neuroscience and mental health research, particularly in low-resource settings. His work will contribute significantly to global efforts in improving mental health diagnostics and treatment.

The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu paid a courtesy call on the Management of University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) at the University's main campus at Sokode-Lokoe, Ho on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, making UHAS the first tertiary institution to host Hon. Iddrisu upon his appointment as Minister of Education.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lydia Aziato, in her welcome address, gave a brief overview of the University and highlighted pressing challenges facing UHAS. Professor Aziato made a passionate appeal for the completion of the University’s Multipurpose Laboratory Complex, a GETFund project that is the largest in sub-Saharan Africa. The Laboratory Complex, when completed, will boost the capacity of the university to increase student numbers and advance teaching, learning, and health research.

Professor Azito emphasized that the stalled GETFund project for the construction of departments and administration block for Fred N. Binka School of Public Health at Fodome, Hohoe, is a matter of huge concern to the university. Currently, the incubating facilities at the Volta Regional Hospital where the FNBSPH is located are not conducive for effective teaching and learning and require urgent attention.

The Vice Chancellor used the occasion to also draw the attention of the Minister to the poor state of UHAS main campus internal roads, which need to be constructed urgently and inadequate residential facilities for students at both campuses, particularly students at the Hohoe Campus.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Frank Edwin, on his part, reiterated the importance of the financial clearance for the recruitment of staff specially to man the biggest Simulation Centre in West Africa which has the potential to train healthcare professionals across the sub-region and also to increase revenue for the University.

The Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, in his remarks, expressed excitement about the fact that among the tertiary institutions in Ghana, UHAS is the only university wholly dedicated to the training of healthcare professionals to improve the quality of lif
