The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu paid a courtesy call on the Management of University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) at the University's main campus at Sokode-Lokoe, Ho on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, making UHAS the first tertiary institution to host Hon. Iddrisu upon his appointment as Minister of Education.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lydia Aziato, in her welcome address, gave a brief overview of the University and highlighted pressing challenges facing UHAS. Professor Aziato made a passionate appeal for the completion of the University’s Multipurpose Laboratory Complex, a GETFund project that is the largest in sub-Saharan Africa. The Laboratory Complex, when completed, will boost the capacity of the university to increase student numbers and advance teaching, learning, and health research.
Professor Azito emphasized that the stalled GETFund project for the construction of departments and administration block for Fred N. Binka School of Public Health at Fodome, Hohoe, is a matter of huge concern to the university. Currently, the incubating facilities at the Volta Regional Hospital where the FNBSPH is located are not conducive for effective teaching and learning and require urgent attention.
The Vice Chancellor used the occasion to also draw the attention of the Minister to the poor state of UHAS main campus internal roads, which need to be constructed urgently and inadequate residential facilities for students at both campuses, particularly students at the Hohoe Campus.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Frank Edwin, on his part, reiterated the importance of the financial clearance for the recruitment of staff specially to man the biggest Simulation Centre in West Africa which has the potential to train healthcare professionals across the sub-region and also to increase revenue for the University.
