AKPAFU ODOMI RICE FESTIVAL 2026: COMMUNITY RALLIES SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS’ BUNGALOW PROJECT
Akpafu Odomi, Oti Region – April 4, 2026
The people of Akpafu Odomi in the Guan District have successfully held their 2026 Rice Festival, using the occasion not only to celebrate their rich agricultural heritage but also to mobilize support for a critical education project—a 12-unit teachers’ bungalow.
The festival, held at the Jubilee Park, was under the theme “Sustaining Quality Education Through Rice Farming,” highlighting the strong link between agriculture and educational development in the community.
The event served as a major fundraising platform aimed at constructing a teachers’ bungalow to reduce the burden of long-distance commuting by teachers, particularly those traveling from Hohoe. The initiative is expected to significantly improve teaching and learning outcomes in the area.
In an interview, the Assembly Member, Mr. Seth Amankwa, emphasized that the project forms part of broader interventions designed to enhance academic performance, especially for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates. He commended the Member of Parliament for the Guan Constituency, Fred Agbenyo, for his immense support toward development in the area and appealed to individuals and organizations to contribute to the successful ex*****on of the project.
Delivering the welcome address, the Chief of Akpafu Odomi, Nana Tetteh-Attu IV, warmly received dignitaries and participants, stressing the importance of education in societal development. He noted that despite challenges facing the educational sector, communities must take proactive steps to support quality education.
He further urged all attendees to contribute their “widow’s mite” toward the teachers’ bungalow project, describing it as a legacy investment for future generations. The Chief also reaffirmed the community’s commitment to improving agricultural practices through innovation and mechanization to boost rice production and support livelihoods.
The Guan District Director of Education, Sophia Adigbli, who attended as Special Guest of Honour, commended the community for linking agriculture to education development.
In her address, she described the bungalow project as a “timely and commendable initiative,” noting that access to decent accommodation remains a major factor in attracting and retaining qualified teachers in rural communities.
She also highlighted key academic support programmes in the district, including the Guan District Mock Examination and coaching and mentorship initiatives for BECE candidates. According to her, these programmes play a crucial role in preparing students academically but require sustained financial and logistical support.
