Fake Visa Agents
Kwame was a young man from Accra who had always dreamt of traveling abroad for greener pastures. One afternoon, while scrolling through social media, he came across an advert that read:
“Work and Pay Visa Available – Travel Abroad Without Stress. Contact Mr. Dickson for Guaranteed Visa.”
The advert looked so convincing, and because Kwame was desperate to change his life, he quickly sent a message to the number on the flyer. Mr. Dickson responded almost immediately, speaking with so much confidence and using sweet words that made Kwame trust him.
Mr. Dickson told him that he could help him secure a Work and Pay Visa, but first, he needed to register with 5,000 Ghana cedis. Without thinking twice, Kwame borrowed money from friends and family and sent the payment.
A few days later, Mr. Dickson called again, saying Kwame needed a police report before his documents could be processed. He demanded 2,000 Ghana cedis. Even though Kwame was already struggling, he believed this was part of the process, so he sold some of his belongings and sent the money.
Two weeks passed, and Mr. Dickson called again. This time, he said Kwame needed to do a laboratory test as part of the visa requirements. The test, according to him, would cost 3,000 Ghana cedis. Kwame was worried, but because he had already invested so much, he convinced himself to send the money.
After three months of constant calls, promises, and excuses, Kwame began to realize that Mr. Dickson was just deceiving him. Anytime he asked for proof of the visa process, Mr. Dickson would come up with new stories, sometimes even pretending to be busy at the embassy.
Kwame waited and waited, but no visa ever came. The more he pressed, the more excuses Mr. Dickson gave until finally, he stopped answering Kwame’s calls.
It was at that moment that Kwame broke down. He had lost 10,000 Ghana cedis in total—money he could have used to start a small business. His dreams were shattered, and his trust was broken.
He sat quietly one evening and whispered to himself:
“If only I knew, I would never have trusted an advert online. I regret ever contacting a visa agent on social media.”
From that day, Kwame decided to share his painful story to warn others never to fall victim to fake visa agents who only survive by taking advantage of people’s desperation.
