'Christmas trees at airport cost GHS 34,000 not GHS 84,000' - Paul Adom Otchere

Paul Adom Otchere has denied allegations that the Airport has bought Christmas trees at GHS84,000.

Speaking as the Board Chairman of the Ghana Airport Company, Mr Paul Adom Otchere, in a response on Facebook says claims that the company bought the trees at GHS84,000 are untrue.

According to the Host of Good Evening Ghana show on Metro TV, the company rather bought the trees at GHS34,000 which is a heavily discounted price.

“The beautiful Christmas tree standing at Terminal 3 and 3 others altogether cost GHC 34,000, which was graciously provided by Jandel Limited at a heavy discount. (We thank Jandel Limited)”

“The other inspirations were provided by Favors and Arts for a total cost of GHC 84,000 out of which GHC 50,000 was obtained via sponsorship.”

Mr Paul Adom Otchere also refuted claims that the staff of the company haven’t been paid their December salaries. “All salaries and or bonuses due to staff for December have been paid.”

“It is ridiculous for anyone to say that the invoices from these two reputable companies were issued in the name of the Board Chairman, that just means the author of such spurious allegations has insufficient acquaintance with corporate workings,” he added.

Police cautions against prophecies that cause fear and panic ahead of watchnight services.

The Police have cautioned religious groups and leaders to be measured in their prophetic utterances ahead of the December 31 watchnight services.

In a statement, the Service urged religious leaders to ensure their prophecies do not injure the right of others and the public interest.

“We, therefore, wish to caution all Ghanaians, especially religious groups and leaders, to be measured in their utterances, especially how they communicate prophecies, which may injure the right of others and the public interest,” a statement dated December 27 said.

They explained that in Ghana’s law, it is a crime to deliberately send communication that is either false or misleading and likely to prejudice or disturb public peace where that person has no evidence to prove otherwise.

“We want to caution that under Ghanaian law, it is a crime for a person to publish or reproduce a statement, rumour or report which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturb the public peace, where that person has no evidence to prove the statement, rumour or report is true.

“It is also a crime for a person, by means of electronic communications service, to knowingly send a communication that is false or misleading and likely to prejudice the efficiency of life-saving or to endanger the safety of any person,” the statement added.

Persons found guilty under these laws could be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five years.

The Police noted that over the years, prophecies of harm, danger and death by some religious leaders have generated tension and panic among the Ghanaian society, thus the reason to caution against prophecies of such nature this year.

Meanwhile, the Police said it is committed to ensuring maximum security during December 31, night service.

The Service urged Ghanaians to be mindful of the welfare of each other and act within the law.

“The Police wish to assure all religious organisations that we are committed to ensuring the maximum security during the 31stDecembernight, end of year services and beyond. There should be no apprehensions therefore about undertaking the various activities,” the statement noted.

The Police added that their action is not against prophecies as they acknowledge that Ghanaians are religious people who believe in the centrality of God in their lives.

Saboba: Seven BECE candidates die, three missing after boat capsizes

Three pupils are still missing but roughly twenty others were rescued on Friday, the Saboba District police commander, ASP Shine Zokoiku, said

At least seven junior high school pupils have been confirmed dead in a boat disaster on the Oti River in the Saboba District of the Northern Region.

Three pupils are still missing and about 21 others were rescued on Friday (12 November), Assistant Superintendent of Police Shine Zokoiku, the Saboba District commander, told reporters.

The dead children were said to be returning from a farm on Friday when the vessel capsized on the river. It is also reported that a group of 31 students from St Charles Lwanga Junior High School had been returning from their headteacher’s farm when the disaster occurred.

The Accra-based Joy FM reported ASP Zokoiku as saying that the police suspect that the boat was overloaded.

Meanwhile, David Takah, the brother of the headteacher, told the radio station that the family does not know the headmaster’s whereabouts. All efforts to contact him so far have failed.

Drowning incidents are common in Ghana, especially in the southern regions, where accidents associated with illegal mining are common.

In October, at least four young people died when their boat capsized on the River Offin in the Ashanti Region.

Their bodies were pulled from the river after nearly three days of searching for those missing.
