Generous Donations Boost UDS Football Team Ahead of FISU World Final in China

As the University for Development Studies (UDS) football team prepares to make history in the final match of the 2025 FISU Universities World Football Tournament in Dalian, China, a wave of support has poured in from former football players and stakeholders in the Ghanaian football community.

The first to contribute was Mr. Tony Baffoe, a Ghanaian businessman currently based in China. In a show of support, Mr. Baffoe donated 30 branded T-shirts to the players. Beyond his generous gesture, what makes this donation particularly meaningful is the personal connection. Mr. Baffoe is a former player of Coach Ibrahim Tanko, the head coach of the UDS team. His contribution not only boosts the team’s morale but also serves as a symbolic reunion of Ghanaian football talents across generations.

Joining in the show of solidarity was another of Coach Tanko’s former players, Mr. Atiku Ibrahim, a former Ghanaian international who represented the nation at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Mr. Atiku donated $300 to the team to support their final preparations. His message emphasized pride in the team's achievement and belief in their potential to bring glory to Ghana on the global stage.

Prior to the team’s departure to China, Mr. W.A. Ibrahim, a veteran football administrator and former Executive Council Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), also offered support. Mr. Ibrahim, who is also known for his role as the former owner of Real Sportive Football Club, donated several packs of bottled water to the team, ensuring the players were well-hydrated and comfortable during their travels.

These acts of kindness and patriotism have energized the UDS squad as they gear up for the grand finale. The support from former players and stakeholders underscores the deep sense of unity and pride within the Ghanaian football community.

The UDS team’s impressive run in the tournament has already captured national attention, and with the final match looming, all eyes will be on Dalian as the young team looks to make history.

🔴 The drones shot down in Poland were not launched from Russian territory, Lavrov said

The drones, which would have been detected on the Polish territory, have a lower flight range than the territory's distance on the Russian border, Lavrov said during a press conference at the UN.

Russia never sends its drones or missiles to EU or NATO states, the head of the Foreign Ministry added.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament, is facing intensified scrutiny after the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) reportedly seized confidential documents related to a May 5, 2025, confrontation during the Save the Judiciary protest.

The clash, which occurred near the entrance of Parliament House, allegedly involved a physical encounter between Afenyo-Markin and Constable Forson of the Ghana Police Service.

According to eyewitnesses and Afenyo-Markin, the officer struck him unexpectedly, leaving him disoriented. Parliamentary staff and CID officers intervened, allowing him to resume the protest and submit a petition calling for judicial independence.

Social media videos of the incident show a tense exchange, with some suggesting the MP may have responded physically. These conflicting narratives have prompted the Ghana Police Service to open two investigations: one into the alleged assault on Afenyo-Markin and the other into claims that he assaulted the officer.

Whether EOCO will take formal action is yet to be determined, but the situation has already intensified national debates over justice, impunity, and the rule of law.

EOCO’s reported interception of sensitive materials adds another layer to the case, potentially revealing what triggered the altercation. While no charges have been filed, sources suggest Afenyo-Markin could face further questioning, especially given his past criticism of EOCO’s handling of politically sensitive matters, including the case involving former NPP official Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi).

The controversy escalated after Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga accused the MP of attempting to discredit EOCO and stressed that parliamentarians should respect law enforcement and pursue grievances through lawful channels.

With inquiries still ongoing, the incident has become a broader reflection on accountability in Ghana, spotlighting issues surrounding public officials’ conduct, the independence of state institutions, and citizens’ trust in the police and judiciary.

Today, I had the privilege of welcoming the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, to the Ministry of Education.

It was a moment of profound gratitude as I commended her for her exemplary leadership and vision during her tenure as Minister for Education.

Her Excellency's vision played a pivotal role in championing STEM education at the basic level, laying a solid foundation for Ghana's future in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. She also spearheaded the promotion of the use of the first language as the medium of instruction at the foundational level - an enduring policy that continues to strengthen literacy and learning outcomes nationwide.

Her legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of visionary leadership on education. I pray that Allah grants her the strength and longevity to one day assume the highest office in the land as Ghana's first female President.
