Ghana and UAE to strengthen strategic energy ties as Mahama expresses solidarity with Abu Dhabi.
President John Dramani Mahama and UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan agreed Wednesday to strengthen energy cooperation. They proposed that the UAE invest in oil and gas storage facilities in Ghana.
The two leaders held these discussions on the sidelines of the "Make it in the Emirates 2026" summit at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
The leaders addressed the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and acknowledged the UAE’s difficult position as a buffer zone. Both expressed hope for a swift resolution to US-Iran hostilities and stated that restoring peace would let the global community refocus on sustainable development and innovation.
Beyond traditional fossil fuels, the two leaders emphasised diversifying energy portfolios. They explored alternative approaches to securing the energy sector and specifically highlighted transitioning to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and solar power to reduce over-reliance on crude oil.
They discussed ways to further enhance bilateral ties for the benefit of their people, focusing on trade, investment, renewable energy, innovation, technology, and artificial intelligence.
The two leaders concluded the meeting by reaffirming the deep historical ties between Ghana and the UAE. The UAE President praised Ghana as a "peaceful partner" and a "secure, stable democracy," noting the significant opportunities for mutual growth.
Both leaders expressed optimism that their renewed partnership would lead to tangible advancements in trade, investment, and sustainable energy, benefiting both nations for years to come.

Ghana has reported South Africa to the African Union (AU) over recurring xenophobic attacks targeting African nationals, including Ghanaians living and doing business in the country. Accra says it has formally petitioned the AU to place the matter on the agenda of its Eighth Mid‑Year Coordination Meeting. Accra says the move comes after complaints of harassment, intimidation, and threats against Ghanaians living and doing business in South Africa, as periodic crackdowns and protests linked to immigration resurface. Ghanaian authorities are seeking AU intervention, urging regional leaders to uphold free movement, safety, and protection of Africans living in other member states. Ghana says reporting the issue to the AU is part of efforts to find a regional solution and prevent further escalation.
