On This Day — Remembering Afeni Shakur

On this day, we remember Afeni Shakur, who passed away in 2016 a woman whose life was defined by resilience, activism, and an unshakable commitment to her community.

A former member of the Black Panther Party, Afeni stood at the forefront of the fight for justice, even representing herself in court during the historic Panther 21 trial and securing an acquittal against all odds.

Beyond activism, she is widely known as the mother of Tupac Shakur but her legacy stands firmly on its own. After his passing, she preserved and protected his voice, ensuring his message continued to reach generations through the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

Afeni Shakur’s legacy is one of strength, purpose, and transformation turning pain into power and using her voice to uplift others. Her impact lives on not only through her son’s music, but through the countless lives she inspired directly.

Mali has just experienced one of its largest waves of violence in years. Coordinated attacks by armed groups hit multiple cities, including the capital Bamako targeting military bases, the airport, and key infrastructure. Heavy gunfire and explosions were reported as militants linked to Al-Qaeda and Tuareg rebel groups carried out the assaults, showing a new level of coordination. While the army says it is responding, the situation remains tense, with civilians caught in the middle of an ongoing conflict that continues to escalate.

The African Union has strongly condemned Israel’s diplomatic engagement in Somaliland, describing the move as a violation of Africa’s collective stance on sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The bloc reaffirmed its unwavering support for Somalia, stressing that Somaliland remains internationally recognized as part of Somalia despite its self-declared independence.

The AU warned that unilateral foreign relations with the region risk undermining stability and set a concerning precedent, urging all states including Israel to respect established international frameworks and avoid actions that could inflame tensions in the Horn of Africa.

During his recent visit to Cameroon, Pope Leo XIV delivered a pointed critique of contemporary global leadership, warning that ‘the world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants.’

Addressing audiences in a region deeply affected by conflict and instability, he called for a fundamental reorientation of political priorities toward peace, justice, and the protection of human dignity. His remarks emphasized the moral responsibility of leaders to reject exploitation and violence in favor of reconciliation and sustainable development.

The speech reflects a broader intervention by the Vatican into ongoing geopolitical tensions, highlighting the ethical dimensions of governance and the urgent need for accountable leadership in an increasingly fragmented world.

Julius Malema is now facing sentencing tied to a 2018 rally, with a possible 5-year prison term. The government frames the case as a straightforward issue of law enforcement, but his supporters see something more political at play.

The legal push has been strongly linked to AfriForum, a group that frequently challenges Malema and has promoted controversial claims like “white genocide,” despite those claims being widely disputed. The narrative has even reached global figures such as Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

To many backing Malema and the EFF, this situation isn’t really about what happened at the rally. They argue it’s tied to his broader stance his criticism of Western influence and his calls for land redistribution without compensation.

That position connects directly to South Africa’s past, particularly the 1913 Land Act, which confined the Black majority to a small share of land while reserving most for white ownership. Decades later, that imbalance hasn’t fully shifted, with land ownership still heavily skewed.

Because of this, the case has become more than a legal issue it’s now part of a bigger debate around history, land, and political power in South Africa.

At least 100 civilians, including children, were killed on Saturday when Nigeria’s Air Force bombed a weekly market near the Borno–Yobe border, according to Amnesty International. The military described the mission as a successful strike on a militant target and made no mention of civilian casualties or the marketplace.

Witnesses reported that four jets carried out the attack while traders from nearby communities had gathered at Jilli market. A local councillor suggested the death toll could be closer to 200. Geidam General Hospital was quickly overwhelmed by the influx of injured victims.

The incident is part of a wider pattern of airstrikes that have killed hundreds of civilians in Nigeria since 2017, with no prosecutions following these events. It also comes as the United States increases its military involvement in the country. In December, AFRICOM conducted a strike inside Nigeria, and Washington has supplied the Nigerian Air Force with 12 Super Tucano aircraft while approving arms sales worth nearly one billion dollars.

Remembering Chris Hani – April 10, 1993

On this day, South Africa lost one of its most influential revolutionary voices. Chris Hani, a leader of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe, dedicated his life to the struggle against apartheid and the pursuit of social justice.

His assassination on April 10, 1993, was a critical moment in the nation’s transition, exposing deep tensions but ultimately accelerating the path toward democratic elections. Hani’s unwavering commitment to equality, dignity, and economic transformation continues to shape political thought in post-apartheid South Africa.

His legacy endures not only in history, but in ongoing struggles for justice, accountability, and true liberation.

Zia Yusuf of Reform UK stated that countries pursuing slavery reparations such as Ghana, Jamaica, Nigeria, Barbados and the Bahamas could face visa restrictions under a Reform government, framing this as a reciprocal response affecting migration policy and diplomatic relations.

The proposal situates reparations claims within contemporary border control debates, particularly following a recent UN resolution led by Ghana declaring the transatlantic slave trade a “crime against humanity,” which the United States voted against while the UK abstained, highlighting wider Western resistance to formal reparatory frameworks.

French support is playing a key role in consolidating power for Benin’s ruling party as voters head to the polls this Sunday. The leading opposition movement, headed by Renaud Agbodjo, has been effectively shut out of the race through endorsement regulations drafted by the ruling coalition itself.

The current government’s grip on power was tested four months ago when military officers attempted to oust President Talon an effort that was swiftly crushed. Paris moved quickly, coordinating a response that saw French special forces deployed across the region while Nigerian aircraft targeted rebel positions within hours of the uprising.

Since January, the ruling coalition has maintained an unbroken hold on every seat in parliament, and Talon’s Finance Minister has emerged as the only credible figure in the presidential race. Geographically, Benin sits at a critical crossroads bordering Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, three nations that have severed ties with France and expelled its military presence. That makes Benin one of the few remaining footholds in the region where French influence still holds sway.

Massive billboards have gone up across Tel Aviv calling on US President Donald Trump to “complete the mission,” as he issued a stark warning that “an entire civilization faces extinction” unless Iran restores access through the Strait of Hormuz.
