DG NADMO Writes,,,,

Over the last week, I led a delegation from the National Disaster Management Organization Ghana (NADMO) to honour an invitation from the Pacific Disaster Centre (PDC) in Hawaii, USA.

I used the opportunity to emphasize how the United States remain a key partner and a model to Ghana, especially in the area of disaster risk reduction. Echoing how our engagement with the US-AFRICOM and also the North Dakota Coast Guard dates back to 2012 till today.
Our current visit to the PDC today re-emphasizes our firm resolve to emulate the best practices in the United States towards resilience building.

In my presentation, I brought to the fore recent events in Ghana which I believe will inform the perspective of the final recommendations in the NDPBA report for Ghana. Currently, Ghana is hosting about 15000 asylum seekers from neighbouring countries, of Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea and Niger. This occurrence submits the country with various degrees of resource overstretch especially in host communities. In addition, climate change exposed us to prolonged rainfall than usual in 2023, causing the flow of excess water into Ghana's major hydroelectric power Dam. To protect the integrity of the dam and also avoid a more catastrophic situation, the managers of the Akosombo Dam resorted to spillage. This phenomenon in addition to the heavy rains directly affected about 34 districts both upstream and downstream. Over 80,000 individuals were displaced. I must acknowledge that the PDC helped NADMO through data collection during the period.

The delegation also visited the Hawaii State Department of Fire , for a technical insight into their operations.

On behalf of the President of Ghana, the People and the Managment of NADMO, I express our appreciation to the US government who have been supporting NADMO through the North Dakota National Guard and now the PDC.

Present for the activities were Ray Shirkhhodai , Executive Director of the PDC as well as Deputy Executive Secretary Chris Chiesa as well as Mr. Seji Saji and Hajia Sawudatu Saeed both deputy Director-Generals of NADMO.

Enhancing Collaboration for a Safer Atwima Mponua: National Disaster Management Organization Visits Ghana Police and Fire Services

On Tuesday 6th February, 2024, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Atwima Mponua district took a proactive step towards ensuring a safer environment for the residents by organizing a visit to the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Fire Service in the district. Led by the Director, Mr. Otuo Acheampong Rabbi, the purpose of the visit was to deliberate on collaboration between these crucial services.

In recent years, Atwima Mponua has experienced both natural and man-made disasters, highlighting the need for a coordinated response system. The visit served as an opportunity to strengthen the existing ties between the NADMO, Ghana Police Service, and Ghana Fire Service, emphasizing their joint efforts in disaster management and mitigation.

During the meeting, various areas of collaboration were discussed. One important aspect was the need for improved information sharing between agencies. By enhancing the flow of information, the NADMO, Police, and Fire Services can work together more effectively in areas such as disaster preparedness, response, and recovery operations.

Furthermore, training and capacity building programs were emphasized to enhance the skills and knowledge of personnel in handling emergencies. This includes joint training sessions and workshops, where officers from different services can learn from each other's experiences and expertise. By aligning their skills, the agencies can optimize their performance during crisis situations.

Additionally, the visit highlighted the importance of community engagement in disaster management. The NADMO, Police Service, and Fire Service agreed to collaborate on creating awareness campaigns to educate the public about safety measures during emergencies. This joint effort aims to empower the residents of Atwima Mponua to take preemptive actions, reducing the impact of disasters and ensuring their own safety.

Moreover, the Director of the NADMO emphasized the significance of proper infrastructure and equipment. It was agreed upon that the agencies would work together to identify and bridge any gaps, ensuring that the Ghana Police Service and Fire Service in the Atwima Mponua district have the necessary resources to respond effectively to emergencies.

The collaboration between the NADMO, Ghana Police Service, and Ghana Fire Service in Atwima Mponua sets a positive precedent for disaster management in Ghana. By leveraging each agency's strengths and expertise, they are poised to significantly improve their joint response and coordination during crises.

In conclusion, the visit from the National Disaster Management Organization to the district's Ghana Police Service and Ghana Fire Service is a welcome step towards enhancing collaboration. By fostering a strong partnership, these agencies are taking concrete measures to maintain a safer environment for the constituents of Atwima Mponua. As the collaboration continues to strengthen, the residents can rest assured that a more robust disaster management system is in place to protect and support them in times of need.

Top 5 Common Causes of Fire Damage

1. Cooking

The NFPA reports that from 2015-2019, cooking caused 49 percent of reported home fires, 20 percent of reported home fire deaths, and 42 percent of home fire injuries. It is the most common cause of residential fires. Major cooking holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas are the riskiest time for cooking fires.

Approximately 44 percent of house fires begin in the kitchen or cooking area and from 2013-2017, almost half of all home structure fires were caused by cooking. These fires are commonly due to things being left cooking unattended as well as open flames and spills. If someone is not in the kitchen to extinguish the fire it can quickly get out of hand.

Tips
• Maintain a fire extinguisher in the kitchen (that is rated for kitchens)
• Don’t use the stove if you are tired or have consumed any alcohol
• Remain in the kitchen while cooking
• Utilize a timer to remind you that things are cooking
• Keep anything that could catch fire (e.g. paper towels, oven mitts, wooden utensils) away from the stove.
