OMANE BOAMAH, MURTALA MOHAMMED, SIX OTHERS DEAD IN MILITARY HELICOPTER CRASH

A tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, has reportedly claimed the lives of the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Others who have been confirmed dead in the crash are Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Aboagye a former Member of Parliament and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of NDC.

The crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu and Seargent Ernest Addo Mensah.

According to initial reports, the high-ranking government officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft went off radar.

Emergency response teams rushed to the crash site following the incident. Graphic footage and images obtained by Citi News showed the charred remains of several victims, though officials have yet to release a full list of the deceased or injured.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who was attending an anti-illegal mining event at the time, reportedly abandoned the programme and rushed to the crash scene upon receiving the news.

In a brief statement, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that efforts were underway to trace and assess the wreckage of the helicopter after it lost contact shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and authorities have yet to confirm further details.

This incident comes more than a year after a previous helicopter accident on March 19, 2024, when a military aircraft crash-landed near Bonsukrom in the Western Region. Fortunately, that earlier crash resulted in no fatalities.

More updates are expected as investigations continue and families are notified.

MINISTER FOR HEALTH ADDRESSES PARLIAMENT ON UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG HEALTH WORKERS.

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh in an address to Parliament, stated that the current number of health workers demanding employment is substantial and far exceeds the quoted figure of 30,000. He provided a breakdown of the various categories of health professionals who are eligible for employment but yet to be recruited.

According to the Minister, the total number of unemployed nurses stands at 48,878. The 2021 batch consists of 15,947 nurses, the 2022 batch has 17,176, and the 2023 batch includes 15,755 nurses. The Minister added that approximately 15,000 nurses were given financial clearance and employed in December 2024. However, the process of placing them on the payroll is still ongoing.

The Minister revealed that allied health professionals have not received any financial clearance since 2019. As a result, there are currently 21,570 unemployed allied health professionals from 2019 to date. According to him there has also been no financial clearance for pharmacists since 2019, leaving a total of 1,621 unemployed.

Regarding medical doctors, the Minister noted that the Ministry has begun the process of recruiting over 900 doctors who are currently unemployed and awaiting placement. He made this known when he appeared before the House to answer questions relating to his Ministry. "The problem is, therefore, enormous," he admitted, "but we are committed to finding solutions to it."

He further stated that the Ministry is exploring managed migration as a strategy to reduce the number of unemployed health professionals. He revealed that Ghana has received formal requests from over 13 countries interested in recruiting and deploying qualified Ghanaian nurses and other health professionals.

FOOTBALLER THOMAS PARTEY CHARGED WITH R**E.

Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of r**e and one count of sexual assault.

The offences are reported to have taken place between 2021-2022, the Metropolitan Police said.

The charges involve three women, with two counts of r**e relating to one woman, three counts of r**e in connection to a second woman and one count of sexual assault linked to a third woman.

The Ghanaian international denies the charges and "welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name", his lawyer said.

The charges follow an investigation by detectives, which started in February 2022 after police first received a report of r**e.

The 32-year-old's contract with Arsenal ended on Monday after playing with the team since 2020.

Arsenal, the Football Association and the Premier League declined to comment.

Det Supt Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.

"We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team. You can contact detectives about this investigation by emailing [email protected]"

Mr Partey, of Hertfordshire, is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 5 August.

In a statement, his lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said: "Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him.

"He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation.

"He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.

"Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further."

Mr Partey joined Arsenal for £45.3m from Atletico Madrid in October 2020, made 35 top-flight appearances last season and scored four goals as the London club finished second in the Premier League.

He also played 12 times in the Champions League as the Gunners reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by eventual winners Paris St-Germain.

Overall, he made 130 Premier League appearances for Mikel Arteta's side, scoring nine goals.

Mr Partey has also made more than 50 appearances for Ghana's national team, and most recently played at World Cup qualification matches in March.
