Minister predicts brisk economic growth in Bono Region

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister predicted a prosperous socio-economic growth and development in the region, a few years ahead.

She said though the region had huge economic prospects, limited infrastructure had made the region unattractive to drive investors for centuries.

The Regional Minister however indicated completion of the rehabilitation of the Sunyani inner-city road project as well as the expansion and rehabilitation of the Sunyani Airport would position the region well to attract investors to push forward trade and commerce.

Mad Owusu-Banahene told Newsmen when she inspected progress of work on the 30-kilometre road project and expansion of the Airport that, on completion, both projects would facilitate and enhance land and air transport that would subsequently spur brisk economic activities.

She said from all indications flight would resume at the Sunyani Airport in March this year, while the Chinese contractors speed up work to complete the inner-city road project in 2023.

The Regional Minister commended the Sino-hydro Corporation of China, contractors executing the inner-city road projects for quality works, and asked them to speed up.

“Our people desire to see bitumen on the road and I plead with you that as you deliver excellent work, try and speed up as well”, she told the contractors.

Mad Owusu-Banahene said under the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government, the region had witnessed significant progress, saying “there are many more in the offing, with particular emphasis on infrastructural development”.

She therefore asked the people of the region to cherish and help preserve the prevailing peace in the region which remained the surest way of benefiting from the “massive infrastructure development this government has to offer the people of Bono region and Ghana as a whole”.

Touching on the progress on the inner-city road, Mr Jacob Nelson, the Bono Regional Director of Urban Roads Department, said work done so far on the project was about 31 per cent, saying 41 per cent of drainage works had also been completed.

He said though 41 percent of the contract period had already elapsed, he was optimistic that with the completion of major works this year, the project would be completed next year.

Mr Nelson said though 41 percent of the contract period had already elapsed, from all indications, the contractors would be able to meet the deadline, because they were almost through with the major works, saying 41 percent of drainage works had also been completed

He explained other major works, including construction of five culverts, on the nine-kilometre ring road from the Jubilee Park to the Fiapre roundabout would also be completed in March.

Describing the level of work done on the project as excellent and standard, Mr Nelson said he was hopeful construction work would not slow down, as the rains set in a few months ahead.

Sunyani Municipal hospital needs incubators urgently

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Sunyani Municipal Hospital needs five incubators, fire flyers and transcutaneous bilirubin metres urgently to prevent newborn deaths in the Municipality.

Mrs Christiana Ayamga, nurse in-charge of the Unit explained only one of the two incubators was functioning, though the unit continued to report cases of new born morbidities, and appealed for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Machines (CPAP) as well.

She told Sky News in an interview in Sunyani on Thursday, the unit recorded 10 cases of asphyxia and nine cases of prematurity in the last month.

Mrs Ayamga made the appeal when Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister visited the hospital to assess operations of the newly constructed maternity block and to interact with pregnant and nursing mothers.

There was however, only one baby at the NICU placed under an improvised CPAP machine that enabled the baby to obtain the required amount of pressure to survive.

Mad Owusu-Banahene expressed discomfort about the situation, and appealed to non-governmental organisations, philanthropists and religious and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the hospital.

She commended the health officials for their selfless services and asked them to build healthy relationships with the mothers and clients saying, healthy relationships with clients would greatly aid their treatment processes.

Dr Helena Alabomo Aboakai, the Acting Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, expressed appreciation to the regional minister for the visit, and appealed to her to use her political influence to lobby for incubators and related medical devices for the NICU.
