The problems are big; they cannot be solved in six months – Asiedu Nketia

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has urged Ghanaians, especially the youth, to exercise patience as the government works to address the country’s pressing challenges and create sustainable jobs.

He noted that the government inherited deep-rooted economic and social problems that could not be resolved overnight, emphasising that it would take time and consistent policy implementation to achieve meaningful results.

“The problems we met are huge; they cannot be solved in just six months. We need a little more time to turn things around,” he said.

Mr Asiedu Nketia made the remarks during his Thank You Tour at Kpetoe in the Agortime-Ziope District of the Volta Region on Wednesday, October 15, as part of his regional engagements.

He explained that job creation would be a gradual process driven by the effective rollout of government initiatives such as the National Apprenticeship Programme, Nkukonkitikiti Programme, Adwumawura Programme, and other youth-focused interventions introduced by President Mahama’s administration.

“These programmes are already being implemented to equip young people with skills and create employment opportunities,” he added.

The NDC Chairman also commended the party’s branch and constituency executives for their continued dedication and urged them to remain supportive even if they have not yet received government appointments.

Mr Asiedu Nketia encouraged the youth to take advantage of recruitment opportunities in the military and other sectors as they become available.

Member of Parliament for Agortime-Ziope, Mr Charles Agbeve, thanked the National Chairman for including his constituency in the tour and assured him that the area would soon experience significant transformation under the NDC government in sectors such as infrastructure, education, health, and local economy.

He disclosed that the District Assembly had received an unprecedented GHS 6 million under the Common Fund within the government’s first six months of funds; he said it would support massive development projects.

District Chief Executive, Mr Alfred Eklu Odikro, also expressed appreciation to the government for the timely release of development funds, noting that several uncompleted projects under the previous administration, including the Ziope Senior High School dining hall, were now being completed alongside new ones such as the Adzorvi and Takuve school blocks.

The Konor of the Agortime Traditional Area, Nene Nuer Keteku IV, lauded the President for fulfilling key promises such as the Ho–Aflao road through Agortime-Ziope project under the “Big Push” initiative.

He, however, reminded the National Chairman of the community’s long-standing request for a College of Education in Agortime, a pledge the President made during his campaign.

Sunyani Paramount Chief Unveils Ambitious Transformation Plan

In a significant move to catalyze the development of Sunyani, the Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Sunyanimanhene Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen KorKor II, convened a high-level breakfast meeting with heads of corporate institutions and leaders from the business community. The meeting was held at the Eusbett International Conference Center.

The gathering served as a strategic platform for the Omanhene to directly engage with the economic drivers of the region and present his comprehensive agenda for the city's future.

During his address, Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen KorKor II outlined a clear and forward-thinking framework for Sunyani's development, which included:

His Vision: A broad, aspirational picture of what he believes Sunyani can become—likely a modern, prosperous, and well-planned city that serves as a key hub for commerce, education, and culture in the Bono Region.

Strategic Goals: Specific, measurable objectives designed to turn the vision into reality. These goals possibly encompass areas such as infrastructure improvement, sanitation, youth employment, tourism development, and enhancing the city's business-friendly environment.

Notable Achievements: The Paramount Chief took stock of progress already made under his leadership, acknowledging completed projects or successful initiatives that form the foundation for future plans.

A Clear Roadmap: A practical, step-by-step plan detailing the actions, partnerships, and resources required to achieve the stated goals. This roadmap likely emphasized collaboration between the traditional authority, the business community, and local government.

The most resonant statement from his speech was a bold promise of rapid and visible change. The Sunyanimanhene confidently declared that within the next five years, Sunyani will be fundamentally transformed and will not resemble the city it is today.

Health Alert: Ghana Health Service confirms rising seasonal flu cases, urges public vigilance

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a public alert confirming a significant increase in seasonal influenza cases across several regions of the country.

In a press release dated October 15, 2025, the service identified the circulating viruses as Influenza A strains H3N2 and H1N1, which are known seasonal flu viruses.

The rise in infections has been particularly noted in the Greater Accra, Central, Bono, and Eastern Regions. The GHS clarified that this increase coincides with Ghana's annual flu season, which typically peaks during the cooler months of the year.

According to the service, symptoms of the seasonal flu include a sudden onset of fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, and fatigue. The illness primarily spreads through respiratory droplets released during coughing, sneezing, or talking, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces. Crowded environments such as schools, dormitories, transport hubs, and markets are considered high-risk settings for rapid transmission.

The GHS specifically warned that children and adolescents, especially with schools in session, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease are at higher risk of severe complications.

The public is advised to seek medical care early if they develop flu-like symptoms and to stay home when unwell to avoid spreading the infection. The service also emphasised the importance of practising good hygiene, including washing hands regularly with soap and running water, covering coughs and sneezes, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces. Furthermore, GHS recommended that citizens "avoid crowded places and close contact with sick individuals" and "use a face mask when in crowded places."

On the health system's response, the GHS stated it has implemented enhanced surveillance and rapid diagnostic testing at health facilities, updated case management protocols for clinicians, and launched public education campaigns through media and community channels.

With schools reopening across the country, the service issued a direct appeal to all school authorities, parents, and students to strictly observe the outlined flu prevention measures. The GHS confirmed it is "working with the Ghana Education Service to safeguard the health of students and staff during this period."

The Ministry of Health, through the GHS, assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to contain the high number of flu cases. It concluded that "the cooperation of stakeholders are vital in protecting yourself, your family, and your community."

The statement was signed by Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Ag. Director-General of the Ghana Health Service.

Ghana in dire need of rheumatologists - Only 3 serving entire nation

Ghana is in dire need of qualified rheumatologists to address the increasing rate of autoimmune diseases and conditions, including arthritis.

Presently, there are only three such doctors across the country.

A rheumatologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal diseases and systemic autoimmune conditions affecting the joints, muscles, tendons and bones.

The Provost, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana, Legon, Prof. Alfred F. Yawson, who made the call, suggested a "national call to action" to expend more effort in training such specialised doctors and highlighting the effects of the conditions on the livelihoods of people.

He said due to the limited number, some patients, over the years, had been wrongly diagnosed, with some even being treated for malaria.

Prof. Yawson was contributing to a forum to commemorate World Arthritis Day, held last Sunday in Accra, on the theme:

"It's in your hands, take action."

It was organised by a non- governmental organisation (NGO) of health workers helping to create awareness of the Rheumatology Initiative (Rti).

The day is marked annually on October 12 as a global awareness event, established in 1996 by Arthritis and Rheumatism International (ARI) to highlight the impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) worldwide.

Prof. Yawson hinted that due to the lack of specialists, it could take up to four years before muscoloskeletal diseases could be correctly diagnosed.

He said arthritis, rheumatoid and other related conditions were part of Non- Communicable Diseases (NCD), also known as silent killers, but often given less importance.

The provost said the economic loss as a result of such illnesses, including joint pains, was huge, especially among women between the ages of 30 and 50, because they were mostly affected.

"The total economic impact can be substantial, with one estimate putting the cost at around 5.75 per cent of GDP.

"We were made to believe that rheumatic conditions were not common in Africa, so the zeal to train doctors in that area was not there," he explained.

Solution
To solve the shortage of such doctors, the Provost said a number of postgraduate doctors, also known as resident doctors, were being trained to fill the gap.

"Hopefully, in the next three years, we could have seven more to join the three. Even that is still inadequate.

“We need to make it a national project to train more to save people from such chronic back, joints and other pains," he said.
