In the run-up to the NPP primaries to choose a flagbearer for the 2000 general elections, the late JH Mensah, who was one of the aspirants, described his main contender, Mr JA Kufuor, as a rejected cassava that was unworthy to be presented to the same market again.

Kufuor was the NPP flagbearer for the 1996 elections, which he lost miserably.

So, Mr JH Mensah's campaign message was that if the Ghanaian people really wanted Kufuor as president, they would not have voted against him in 1996.

Despite that campaign against Kufuor by his contenders within the NPP, majority of the NPP delegates believed that changing Prof Adu Boahen in 1996 for Kufuor contributed to the NPP’s defeat in the 1996 elections and so decided to re-elect Kufuor for the sake of consistent marketing.

The 2000 election results proved the NPP delegates right, as Kufuor defeated the incumbent NDC government candidate Prof JEA Mills, who was a first-time contestant.

History is always good to guide the future.
