A lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Dr Mahama Seth Sayibu, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to establish a permanent special police taskforce base in Tamale, warning that recent gains made in the fight against crime in the Northern Region could be short-lived if a sustained security presence is not maintained.

In a statement commending the Ghana Police Service, Dr Sayibu praised the IGP’s special taskforce operations currently underway across parts of the Northern Region, describing the exercise as impactful and timely. According to him, the operations have significantly reduced the activities of criminals and drug peddlers in Tamale and other districts where the taskforce has been deployed. Despite the success, Dr Sayibu cautioned that the absence of a permanent taskforce presence could allow criminal networks to regroup once the special operations end. He argued that sustained police visibility is critical to winning the long-term fight against crime in the northern sector.

More students from the Savelugu Constituency are gaining access to tertiary education following the expansion of a locally funded student support scheme aimed at reducing financial barriers to schooling.

Under the latest phase of the initiative, over 80 students have received financial assistance amounting to GH₵129,000, to help cover tuition and other academic-related expenses.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Member of Parliament for Savelugu, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul-Aziz, said the programme is designed to ensure that no qualified student is denied education due to financial hardship.

NPP delegates in Amansie Constituency declare resounding support for Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s commitment to human capital development has ignited strong emotional and political support among delegates in the Amansie district of the Ashanti Region, following his sponsorship of 150 students pursuing studies in engineering and medicine.

The atmosphere was charged with emotion as Dr. Adutwum shared the motivation behind the initiative, explaining how the beneficiaries, many of whom once had little hope of attaining higher education are now positioned to become professionals who can transform their families and communities.

Delegates described the intervention as a clear demonstration of leadership rooted in empathy, foresight, and practical solutions to Ghana’s socioeconomic challenges. Several questioned why some political actors seeking leadership positions are unable to account for their stewardship, yet continue to make lofty promises.

Extradition of Ofori-Atta: Let’s use diplomacy and public pressure – Manasseh Azure

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni says Ghana must move beyond legal technicalities and apply diplomatic and public pressure if it is serious about bringing former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta back to face accountability.

Speaking on the principle of reciprocity in international relations on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey, Manasseh argued that while legal processes matter, powerful individuals often evade justice because they have the resources to delay, frustrate or manipulate systems across borders.

Manasseh noted that while the Attorney-General may be legally correct in outlining the extradition process, it is misleading to suggest that the matter is entirely out of Ghana’s hands.

Mahama has not given any indication that he wants to go for a third term – Majority Leader

Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has denied claims of possible constitutional amendment to grant President Mahama a third term, but says that choice lies with Ghanaians.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, December 19, 2025 before the House went on recess, Mahama Ayariga, said although Ghanaians approve of the work of President Mahama, there is no plan to give him a third term.

“I know that due to the excellent performance of John Dramani Mahama, Ghanaians are asking him to seek a third term. I know that because I read on social media, I listen to conversations and Ghanaians believe that as a result of the good deed of His Excellency President Mahama they don’t want him to leave the Presidency and they believe a third term is possible and they are demanding for a third term.

“But John Dramani Mahama has not given any indication that he wants to go for a third term. But I have always said Ghanaians will be the ultimate decider of the future of this country,” he stated.
