Waani D'barber write
I want to extend my appreciation and deepest gratitude to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for introducing free SHS in Ghana's education system. My little sister completed Mamfe Methodist Girls Senior High in 2014. My dad had gone on pension for almost three years before she began school, and his pension money became entangled with SSNIT.
When my sister passed her BECE and got her school of choice, which wasn't MEGHIS, she couldn't attend due to the location outside Accra. My late uncle, a senior fire officer and former classmate of the then MEGHIS headmistress, showed her my sister's results, and she loved them, granting her admission to the school.
We completed the necessary documentation, and she was enrolled. To make a long story short, when my sister was writing her WASSCE, she had an arrears of school fees to settle. Throughout the entire examination period, my sister never had a sound mind to write her exams.
In fact, at some point, she was threatened that if she didn't settle all her arrears, she wouldn't be allowed to continue the rest of her papers. My sister nearly dropped out of school. During her Integrated Science exam, she was delayed for almost an hour before being allowed to write that paper.
When she finally completed school and her results were released, they were withheld for three months. Mind you, I catered for her entire academic year until completion, and I lost my job too, because of 'dumsor.' So, after three months, when I got some money, the rest of her school fees were paid, and her results were finally released to her.
When she saw her results, she cried and said, 'Ah bra Kwasi, if I had had a sound and peaceful mind, I would have done better than these grades.' My prayer is that God should bless me financially, and I'll let her rewrite, and I know she'll pass. She wants to become a doctor, so help me God.
So, when I see some people trying to water down FSHS, I pity them. This morning, our last born called to tell me that their results are out, so I should check it for her. I pray she excels because she's a beneficiary of Nana Addo's FSHS.
