Gender Minister Rallies Staff to Uphold President’s Social Contract with Ghanaians

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has urged staff of the Ministry to remain committed to upholding dignity, respect, and service in the discharge of their duties as part of government’s broader social contract with the people of Ghana.

Speaking to core team members of the Ministry, Dr. Lartey emphasized that those working within the sector bear a deeper responsibility in ensuring that policies and interventions translate into tangible benefits for citizens.

“I may have contributed from the perspective of a legislator or through civil society engagements, but you, as the Ministry’s technical team, understand more than anyone else what it means to Ghanaians to believe in good, in dignity, and with respect,” she noted.

She reminded staff that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has signed a social contract with Ghanaians and expressed her resolve not to renege on this commitment.

“I have no intention of being the one to let him down, and I don’t expect that from any of you,” Dr. Lartey stressed, urging her team to align their efforts with the vision of the Ministry and the President’s development agenda.

The Minister further encouraged collaboration, professionalism, and accountability among the staff to strengthen the Ministry’s role in promoting social welfare, gender equality, and child protection across the country.

MoGCSP Trains Newly Constituted Domestic Violence Management Board

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), through the Domestic Violence Secretariat, has held a two-day orientation and training programme for members of the newly constituted Domestic Violence Management Board.

The initiative was designed to strengthen the capacity of the Board to provide oversight and strategic direction in line with the Domestic Violence Act, 2007 (Act 732). It also served as a platform for members to interact, build teamwork, and sharpen delivery of their mandate.

Addressing the participants, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, congratulated the members on their appointment and underscored the urgency of tackling domestic violence, which she described as a major national concern.

Dr. Lartey outlined the statutory responsibilities of the Board and highlighted several government-led interventions under the administration of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama.

These include the establishment of 16 regional shelters with comprehensive services for survivors, the introduction of a Survivors Care Kit offering free legal and medical support, the ratification of ILO Convention 190, the launch of the national “Zero Tolerance for Domestic Violence and Sexual Harassment” campaign, and the elevation of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) to a Directorate.

The Head of the Domestic Violence Secretariat, Madam Malonin Asibi, briefed the Board on the Secretariat’s mandate and called for closer collaboration to ensure effective policy implementation.

Sessions also covered the role of the Board, strategies for effective governance, the Secretariat’s 2025 work plan, and policy commitments in the government’s Reset Manifesto.

The Chairperson of the Board facilitated discussions on emerging trends in gender-based violence and guided members in drafting an initial work and action plan.

The Minister pledged the Ministry’s continuous support, including periodic engagements with the Board, and urged members to demonstrate commitment to their duties in advancing the fight against domestic violence.

Pokuase–Nsawam Road Project 75% Complete – Roads Minister

Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has disclosed that the Pokuase–Nsawam Road project has reached 75% completion. He noted that the bulk of the work has been done, putting the project on course for completion by April 2020.

Mr. Agbodza explained that financial performance is also encouraging, with about 78% of the contract sum already paid to the contractor. This, he said, places disbursement slightly ahead of the physical works completed so far.

“We have gone past the most difficult stages of the work, and that is why the contractor is confident about delivering by April next year. If you look at the payments made—about 78%—and the physical work, which is 75%, the financial performance appears to be slightly better than the physical,” the Minister stated.

While the contractor projects to finish the main construction works by April, the Minister indicated that final touches and related works could extend into June 2020. He assured road users and communities along the corridor that the government remains committed to completing the project within the set timeframe to ease traffic congestion and improve mobility.

Great Ningo Paramount Chief Raises Alarm Over 20-Year Water Crisis

The Paramount Chief of the Great Ningo Traditional Area, Nene Osroagbo Djagmah XII, has expressed grave concern over the lack of potable water in the community, describing the situation as unacceptable and dire.

Speaking at the grand durbar of chiefs and people of the Old Ningo Traditional Area, Nene Djagmah XII lamented that residents have endured more than two decades of water scarcity, a challenge he said has taken a toll on livelihoods and public health.

“For over 20 years, our people have struggled without access to safe and reliable drinking water. This is no joke; it is a daily struggle for families in Old Ningo,” the Paramount Chief stated.

He underscored the urgent need for government intervention to restore water supply and end the perennial shortages that have plagued the area. According to him, the situation forces indigenes to travel long distances and endure great hardship in search of water, a basic necessity of life.

Nene Djagmah XII called on stakeholders, particularly government and relevant agencies, to prioritize the needs of the community and work towards a lasting solution to the water crisis in Ningo.
