NPP PETITIONS IGP OVER AZORKA’S THREATS AGAINST AFENYO-MARKIN: URGES GOVT TO STAY ASIDE FOR LAW TO ENFORCE

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over conduct by two leading members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.

The NPP accuses NDC National Vice Chairman Chief Sofo Azorka and Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer Abdul Wahab Amadu of threatening violence and assaulting party officials during the polls.

According to the NPP, Chairman Azorka was captured in a video making threats against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, stating that if he had encountered the MP at the by-election grounds, “there would have been a by-election in Effutu,” his constituency.

The New Patriot party (NPP) urges the government to stay aside and allow the law to take its course, dealing with those involved in the attack.

Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP’s national communications director, stated that “the election shouldn’t be a license for someone to intimate any person because his government is power.”

He added that “what happened in Ablekuma North and Akwatia by-election is bad, so the government should not intervene but allow the law to enforce and deal with the people involved in the attack.”

According to Ahiagbah, one of the key victims of the attacks was Alhaji Masawudu, the NPP’s Third Vice Chairman, who was allegedly assaulted by Chairman Azorka. Additionally, the Minority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, were reportedly subjected to threats and intimidation during the by-election.

“These actions go beyond partisan politics; they threaten public safety and undermine the credibility of our electoral process,” Ahiagbah stated. “We expect the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly and impartially.”

Richard Ahiagba thanked the IGP for meeting with them and expressed confidence that the IGP will work to enforce the law. Ahiagba stated that they will follow up on the petition if they don’t hear anything or see action taken.

INDIA ANNOUNCES FOUR-DAY HOLIDAY IN SEPTEMBER

Opemeh News Desk – Sept. 2, 2025

India has declared a stretch of holidays from September 3 to 6, 2025, to mark a series of cultural and religious events.

The break begins with Karma Puja, continues with Onam in Kerala, and climaxes with Eid-e-Milad, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, which is a gazetted national holiday. Schools, banks and government offices in different states will observe the holidays.

This means workers, students and families will enjoy an extended long weekend to rest, travel and celebrate.

The month of September is already packed with other festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri and Durga Puja, which promise to keep the festive spirit alive across India.

For many, this four-day holiday comes as a welcome relief and a rare chance to reconnect with tradition and family life.
