Black Box of Crashed Military Helicopter Recovered — Minister Says It Will Reveal the Truth

Ghana is a step closer to understanding what caused the tragic military helicopter crash that killed eight people, including senior government officials and military personnel, as the black box of the aircraft has been recovered.

This was confirmed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, in a Facebook post on Wednesday. He said the black box—known to record cockpit conversations and flight data—has been secured and will be analysed to uncover what led to the fatal crash in the Obuasi forest area.

“Black Box has been found,” Dr. Amoakohene wrote. “This box will be played and the incident which took place before the clash in the forest will be known. Whether there was a fault in the aircraft before the clash, it will be known. Whether the aircraft developed a fault few minutes before the crash, it will be known.”

According to him, the box could also provide clarity on who was in control of the aircraft at the final moments and whether human error was involved. He emphasized that the recordings may capture the final words of Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed, who were among the victims.

“If it was the fault of the pilot of the helicopter, it will be known after officials watch the video because some Ghanaians have called for full investigation into the matter. What were the last words of the Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed? This box will reveal it all,” the minister said.

In addition to confirming the recovery of the black box, Dr. Amoakohene noted that he and a delegation have formally visited the families of two victims — Dr. Sarpong and Hon. Aboagye — to offer their condolences. He also disclosed that the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has opened a Book of Condolence (BOC) for the fallen heroes.

Assemblies of God pastor reveals how First Lady prevented Prez Mahama from travelling in the helicopter that day

Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam of Assemblies of God, Ghana, has responded to claims that his church “saved” President Mahama’s life by keeping him from boarding the helicopter that c,rashed on August 6.

Wengam explained that Mahama was originally scheduled to represent Ghana at Côte d'Ivoire’s Independence Day.

However, his wife, Lordina Mahama, reportedly urged him to stay and attend a national church event instead.

Due to that decision, the President sent Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah in his place—he tragically lost his life in the crash.

“We did nothing,” Wengam said, reacting to viral praise and attributing the turn of events to divine providence, not human planning.

How a Phone Call Allegedly Saved President Mahama from Boarding the Crashed Helicopter

Ghana is mourning after a tragic military helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight people, including two top government ministers. But in a haunting twist of fate, it is now emerging that President John Dramani Mahama may have narrowly escaped death due to a last-minute phone call.

The Z-9 military helicopter, carrying five passengers and three crew members, crashed on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, near Adansi in the Ashanti Region. The victims were en route from Accra to Obuasi on official duty. Among the deceased were Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Environment Minister, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed—both key figures in Mahama’s administration.

Following the crash, President Mahama declared three days of national mourning. Flags are flying at half-mast, and the nation is reeling from the loss.

“The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country,” said Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, in an official statement.

However, the weight of grief has been matched by a wave of disbelief as unconfirmed reports surface that President Mahama was initially scheduled to be on that same ill-fated flight.

Veteran broadcaster Kwame Nkrumah Tikese of Okay FM revealed on air that President Mahama had planned to join the ministers on the trip but pulled out after receiving a sudden phone call.

> “He then told his ministers to proceed without him,” Tikese stated, implying that a spontaneous change of plan—possibly prompted by divine intervention or presidential duty—spared his life.

Sources at Jubilee House confirm the president is deeply shaken. According to insiders, he shared a close working relationship with both Dr. Boamah and Hon. Murtala Mohammed, making the loss even more personal.

“The Pain Feels Real Now” - NAPO Breaks Silence as Bodies of Helicopter Crash Victims Land in Accra

Grief has deepened across Ghana following the arrival of the bodies of the eight top government officials who tragically lost their lives in yesterday’s helicopter crash at Adansi. Their remains were flown to Accra this morning, greeted by tearful loved ones, dignitaries, and a nation still reeling from one of the darkest days in recent memory.

Among the mourners was Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, the former Energy Minister and Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who expressed his sorrow in a heartfelt tribute.

“The arrival of the bodies of our departed brothers in Accra makes the weight of this national tragedy even more real. In these quiet, heavy moments, we are reminded of the grave loss Ghana has suffered,” NAPO said.

The helicopter, carrying the Defence Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, Environment Minister, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, and six other senior state officials, crashed en route from Accra to Obuasi while on official duty. All eight on board perished in the tragic incident that has shocked the nation.

The emotional weight of the moment was visible at the Kotoka Air Force Base, where a brief ceremony was held to honour the fallen. Military officials stood in solemn attention as the caskets, draped in Ghana’s flag, were offloaded in a quiet, tear-streaked procession.

NAPO, visibly shaken, called on Ghanaians to come together in national mourning.

“Let us, as one people, stand together and hold each other up through this time of deep mourning and reflection,” he urged.

He also extended sympathy to the grieving families, calling for unity and compassion.

“And as we grieve, may we remember to keep the eight bereaved families in our thoughts and prayers, asking for strength, comfort, and healing in the days ahead,” he added.

“Muntaka Would Have Died Too If Not for Ato Forson" – NSA Official Reflects on Helicopter Crash

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Deputy Director General at the National Sports Authority (NSA), Donkor Fuseni, has revealed that Ghana’s Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, narrowly escaped the tragic helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom that claimed the lives of eight top government officials.

The fatal crash, which occurred yesterday, has plunged the nation into mourning, with citizens reeling over the loss of prominent leaders including Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed.

According to Donkor Fuseni, fate may have played a mysterious role in who lived and who perished.

“If not for Ato Forson, Muntaka Mubarak would have boarded the flight. He was the fifth person, but the Finance Minister pulled him out because of their meeting,” he said during an interview on TV3’s morning show.

Fuseni explained that Muntaka was originally listed as one of the officials scheduled to fly to Obuasi aboard the ill-fated military helicopter. However, at the last minute, Finance Minister Ato Forson insisted on an urgent meeting with him, resulting in a switch that saw Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed take Muntaka’s place on the trip.

“What saved Muntaka was nothing but fate, because he was all set for that flight,” Fuseni added solemnly.

The helicopter, which went down during its journey to the Adansi area, was carrying senior government officials on official duties. Rescue operations confirmed the deaths of all on board, sending shockwaves through political and public circles alike.

This new revelation has added to the emotional weight of the tragedy, stirring conversations about destiny, leadership, and the fragility of life.

Social media users have flooded platforms with expressions of grief and disbelief, many echoing the sentiment that “it could have been anyone.”

Tragic Helicopter Crash: President Mahama Appoints Ato Forson, Armah Kofi Buah to Fill Ministerial Gaps Temporarily
By Mzta Churchill | August 7, 2025

In the wake of the heartbreaking helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight top government officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Hon. Murtala Mohammed, President John Dramani Mahama has moved swiftly to fill the critical gaps in leadership.

In a solemn directive issued today, August 7, 2025, the President announced that Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson will now also serve as Acting Minister for Defence. Similarly, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Kofi Armah Buah, has been asked to take on the additional role of Acting Minister for Environment.

These temporary appointments come less than 24 hours after the tragic Adansi helicopter crash on August 6, which plunged the entire nation into mourning. The late Dr. Omane Boamah and Hon. Murtala Mohammed were among eight high-ranking officials onboard the ill-fated helicopter that went down during a working trip in the Ashanti Region.

“This directive is to ensure that government activities continue smoothly even as the country mourns the loss of these dedicated statesmen,” a statement from the Presidency read.

President Mahama, who has since declared three days of national mourning, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and acknowledged the enormous contributions of the fallen leaders. By assigning existing ministers to act in the vacant positions, the President aims to maintain stability and continuity in governance while honoring the memory of those who died in service to the nation.

Ghanaians across the country have been grieving, with social media flooded with tributes, tears, and candlelight posts. Many have praised the quick decision by the President to fill the leadership vacuum while preparations for the final funeral rites begin.

Diogo Jota died. Dignified coverage. Respectful distance from the gory scenes.

And then there's us. Live coverage of remains, live coverage of cocoa sacks being used to convey them, zero dignity in their final moments.

We, the GH media, we all must do better.

I was so disappointed seeing it. Initially I thought thought the one carrying the sack was a farmer returning from his farm until the camera man continue capturing it. Our issue is every media house always want to be the first to report. So sad.

Full List & Photos of 8 Officials Confirmed Dead in Helicopter Crash at Adansi

Ghana was thrown into deep mourning on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, as the government confirmed the death of eight high-ranking officials, including two sitting ministers, in a helicopter crash near Adansi in the Ashanti Region.

The crash, which occurred during a routine working visit to inspect security installations and environmental sites, has left the nation reeling with grief, especially as it involves some of the most familiar faces in the Mahama-led administration.

Among the deceased are Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister for Defence, and Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the Minister for Environment—both respected figures known for their service and dedication. Also lost were Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); and Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate with a long history of grassroots mobilization.

Three members of the Ghana Air Force who were operating the helicopter also perished. They include Squadron Leader Peter (surname yet to be confirmed), Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo.

Government officials, party leaders, and citizens alike have been expressing shock and sorrow since the news broke. Flags are expected to fly at half-mast, and President John Dramani Mahama is reported to have cut short his engagements to return to Accra.

Speaking to the media, a senior government representative who visited the crash site said:

“This is not just a loss to government; it is a loss to the soul of this nation. These men dedicated their lives to service, and Ghana will forever remember them.”

Eyewitnesses in Adansi described hearing a loud noise shortly before the helicopter was seen spinning uncontrollably before crashing into a forested area.
