E/R:Kukurantumi Erupts in Chaos as Suspect Dies After Police Arrest

Tensions flared in Kukurantumi, a town in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region, following the death of a young man identified only as Bright, popularly known as “B Ball.”

According to residents, the police, led by Chief Inspector Fumadoh, initially went to retrieve a stolen television but later attempted to arrest the deceased for allegedly possessing a substance suspected to be Indian h**p. When he resisted, officers allegedly used excessive force, injuring him. He was later rushed to the hospital but died on Sunday morning, 21st September 2025.

News of his death sparked outrage among residents, particularly the youth, who stormed the Kukurantumi Police Station and set the facility ablaze. The situation escalated quickly, forcing the police to fire warning shots and call for reinforcement to prevent further destruction and loss of life.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Charles Yeboah Darko, together with the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Awatey, the Regional Police Commander COP Twumasi Ankrah, and Barimah Dr. Kwabena Awuah Parker I, Chief of Akyem Sokode-Juaso, intervened to restore calm.

Addressing the agitated youth, Barimah Dr. Kwabena Awuah Parker I urged them to avoid violence and stressed that the role of the police is to maintain law and order, not to harm civilians. He expressed deep concern over the events and called for patience as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Police Command has taken over the matter, with the officers involved transferred to Accra for interrogation. Authorities have assured the public that the case will be investigated thoroughly and any officers found culpable will face the necessary sanctions.

Barimah Dr. Kwabena Awuah Parker I further assured the traditional council’s commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure lasting peace in Kukurantumi.
