The Gambia Immigration Department (GID), with support from The Gambia Police Force (GPF), on 6th January 2025 intercepted over 100 would-be migrants at Kamalo near Denton Bridge, Kanifing Municipality, as part of efforts to curb irregular migration.

Preliminary investigations are ongoing to determine the boat’s origin, point of departure, nationalities involved, and those suspected to be behind the operation. The intercepted individuals are being transported to the Tanji Migration Center for profiling and further processing.

The GID commends the GPF for their support and reaffirms its commitment to combating irregular migration while promoting safe, regular, and orderly migration pathways.

Mayor Talib Bensouda Lays Foundation for Bakoteh Fish Market Expansion

Today, Mayor Talib Bensouda laid the Foundation Stone for the expansion of Bakoteh Fish Market, adding an extra 3,745.16 m² of space to accommodate hundreds of vendors.

The first phase, costing D4.4 million, will provide street vendors with legitimate space within the market.

The ceremony was attended by Cllr Lamin Jammeh (Vice Chair of the Market Board), Deputy Mayor Binta Janneh Jallow, and CEO Pa Sait Ceesay. Vendors also praised Famara Jarjue, the newly appointed market manager, for his efforts in improving cleanliness and supporting traders.

The Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) has reportedly arrested a Norwegian national, a Gambian, and several others across multiple locations between 2nd to 4th January 2026 for possession of suspected co***ne, cannabis, and other prohibited and controlled dugs. the updates shared on their page state that all the suspects are currently in custody while further investigations into their respective cases continues.

Brikama Area Council (BAC) has dismissed claims of a salary crisis as false. The council says all staff salaries for January–December 2025 were fully paid without taking any loans, and it entered 2026 with a surplus of over D2 million.

BAC also disclosed that it is owed nearly D4 million in outstanding payments. The council maintains that there are no unpaid salaries and challenged media houses to compare its performance with other councils.
