UNICEF Gambia on Monday has celebrated 60 years of partnership with the government and people of The Gambia, highlighting significant progress in promoting child rights and welfare. Since 1965, UNICEF has worked closely with the government to improve various sectors, including child Health, vaccine procurement, cold-chain logistics, community mobilisation, and health-system strengthening, contributing to increased child survival rates.

The celebration marks a renewed commitment to accelerating progress for every child in The Gambia, with a focus on innovative solutions, increased investment, and collective action.

Mr. Abubacarr S. Camara, Director General of The Gambia Tourism Board, appeared before the National Assembly Special Select Committee investigating former President Yahya Jammeh’s assets. He explained the Board’s land allocation procedures in the Tourism Development Area and stated that, to his knowledge, the GTBoard had not received any official communication regarding the Janneh Commission’s recommendations to cancel certain land allocations to the former president.

The commemoration aimed to raise awareness about premature birth and its impact on families, while emphasising the need for quality care and support for preterm babies and their families.

Four Gambian men have been commended for their bravery after jumping into the sea to seek help when a migrant canoe from Tanji ran out of fuel on its way to Spain. According to Ebrima Migrants Situation, two men left at dawn on makeshift rafts crafted from fuel drums, with two more following later.

Maritime Rescue teams eventually located both the improvised rafts and the stranded canoe, which was carrying 157 migrants, including 26 women and eight minors.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed close family members to key government positions in her new cabinet. Her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has been named Deputy Minister for Education, while her son-in-law, Mohamed Mchengerwa, becomes Minister of Health. Former President Jakaya Kikwete’s son, Ridhwani Kikwete, has also been appointed Minister of Public Service Management and Good Governance.

President Suluhu Hassan recently secured re-election with nearly 98% of the vote, and the newly appointed cabinet is set to be sworn in on Tuesday.
