PRESS RELEASE
Regarding the Alleged Arrest of Lawyer Bory S. Touray
Misleading information being circulated on social media claiming that Hon. Mai Ahmad Fatty “ordered” the Inspector General of Police to arrest Lawyer Bory S. Touray is false. Hon. Fatty supports the statutory mandate of the Police to act in any situation they deem legitimate in accordance with the law; however, he played no role whatsoever in the alleged arrest of Lawyer Touray.
While Hon. Fatty strongly disagrees with certain public sentiments previously expressed by Lawyer Touray—sentiments he publicly and firmly criticized—he categorically denies any involvement in actions taken by law enforcement. Hon. Fatty strongly condemns all statements or actions likely to undermine the rule of law, peace, and stability in The Gambia, whether made by individuals in the opposition or within the ruling Alliance.
He further notes that although the sentiments expressed were regrettable, an “invitation” by the Police accompanied by a strong caution could have been sufficient, given that this was reportedly the first such incident. Hon. Fatty has no power or authority to “order” or “instruct” the arrest of any individual, as he exercises no direct or indirect control or supervisory responsibility over any law enforcement entity. The allegation is fake news, conceived and promoted by detractors and mischief-makers within the social media space.
Hon. Fatty reiterates that every Gambian is subject to the law and that no one is above it—regardless of whether they belong to the opposition or the ruling Alliance. He encourages all law enforcement agencies to apply the law equally to all persons, without regard to status or any other improper criteria, consistent with the constitutional principle of equality before the law.
He calls on all Gambians to foster understanding, strengthen the rule of law, and promote peaceful coexistence within the political ecosystem. He emphasizes that no political ambition is worth destabilizing our Republic or shedding the blood of a single Gambian. He further stresses that winning an election should never be a “do or die” affair—a phrase he himself once used but later regretted upon deeper reflection.
Although he does not share Lawyer Bory Touray’s inflammatory sentiments, Hon. Fatty hopes that Lawyer Touray may have inadvertently underestimated their potentially devastating unintended consequences on the peace and stability of our Republic.
